This is a photo of my Violet Clematis I planted last spring. I was afraid it would not survive the harsh winter we had here in Minnesota. But as you can tell it looks very healthy. It grew very well last year giving me maybe 20 flowers total and vining out maybe 5 feet. Now I know there are 2 different types and that each require a different style of pruning, but for the life I me I can not recall which I have. If anyone knows how to prune Clematis please let me know. I did nothing to this after it was done last year. The branches and vines just broke off. Is it okay each year to leave it to die off as well? Will it produce more flowers if pruned or what? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I think some need light pruning in the spring, some need hard pruning in the spring and some need no pruning.. It almost sounds like you may have the non-pruning type.. But violet is in every type.. maybe you'll be able to tell by watching it..? Some also say to prune it to the ground in the late fall.. Do you remember where you got it and when?

Seems so huh? I did nothing to it in the fall. The branches/vines just broke off on their own and now it is sprouting very well. So I shall see what happens this spring/summer. Thanks also. I got it at Bachmans. I am going there this weekend and am planning on asking many garden questions including this. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I'm afraid I can't help you out with this, the flower being unfamiliar to me. Yesterday I planted 20 geraniums. I planted them in a line close together. This is so they will form a barrier/hedge between my neighbours ugly yard & mine. The produce pink flowers & are very hardy. They are easily pruned by just chomping off whatever bits you want.

That's a good idea as a barrier etc. I may get some one year but not this year as I have other exspenses for the garden coming up. I pick up my compost barell Saturday. I have to learn all about composting now. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

My mom never pruned hers, so I would not know. I could look it up, but I am too lazy. Happy flowering, Grandpa Bob.

I have no clue as to when or if you are supposed to prune Clematis or not! However, I am glad to see you are feeling better and back to posting!

that is unusual for a clematis isnt it but you arelucky and you have a green thumb. I know that they are hard to grow backin South Dakota where I originally came from , Here in Southern California they grow really easily. I cannot for the life of me remember how to prune them You neeed a Western Gardening book oh my I forgot you are in Minnesota but still it takes all the diferent regions into account and it tells how to prune all the various kinds of clematis. anyway its a great book to have or to check out from your local library too
