How Many people on Mylot have sold or are selling now on Ebay??

United States

Hello, everyone, I used to sell on Ebay and quit it just over 14 months ago.. I quit because at the time my mom was so very sick and then she passed away.. I also had a few bad experiences and just got sick of the hassle.. I had 1599 feedbacks when I quit, but at the time sales had went down tremendously.. I guess that I do have quite a few questions on this post, anyway I do have more than one question.. I am considering starting selling again, but wasn't sure just yet.. Who on Mylot sells on ebay and are the sales still down, What items are getting bids right now, are everday items getting bids now or do you have to have an expensive antique item to get a bid, what are you selling on ebay and are the items selling now, has the economy affected the bids that you are getting now.. Are sales still the same or have you noticed your sales going down.. I appreciate any help that I can get to help me make a decision as to whether or not to start selling again on ebay..

I stopped selling AND buying on greedbay in Feb of this year as the announcements of all the new ridiculous policies, pricing changes etc were announced. It is very obvious that greedyfeepay doesn't give a d@mn about its' sellers. I will continue my personal boycott until/when/if they get their heads out of their @sses and realize what they are doing is just plain WRONG. Many have had success at other sites like loudfrog. I have an on-line friend that I met on the bay. After the changes were anounced, she closed her stor (she was selling fireplace stone etc) she opened up a store on loudfrog and has made 4 sales at alomost 100% profit (loudfrog only takes 1% FVF... EVERYTHING else is FREE. I am taking a selling hiatus until I can get my household back in order. I am tired of seeing boxes and all my crap i was trying to sell all over my house. Good luck to you if you decide to sell there aagain, but I encourage you to check out alternative sites as well.

Thanks so much for the response, because you stated it exactly how I feel.. I didn't want to be as forceful because I didn't want to scare anyone away from my discussion, but you stated it 100% right.. I did put loudfrog in my favorites and am going to check it out as soon as I catch up on my posts.. I have also sold on Craigslist and never had to pay a penny.. The boxes, and supplies will get to you after awhile.. thanks and good luck to you..

Ebay charges listing fees which vary, and final value fees which are a percentage of the price the item sold for.. I believe that Craigslist is all over the United States and it is free to list and sell something on there.. I recently sold a white lattice arbor that we no longer has a use for on Craigslist.. It was so much easier than doing ebay.. Sometimes my ebay fees were over a 100.00 a month and it didn't seem as if I was making any profit.. You have to pay Paypal fees also if you accept paypal..

I have sold a few things in the past, but mostly now use it for buying stuff-I bought a bike thru ebay last year, and have saved the cost of it back by using it instead of the car for short trips! I've been buying kit for it recently-a lights set, rechargeable batteries for the lights, etc. If You have salable items, try it and see-maybe hold out until they offer free or cut price listing promotions which come up...compare what's on offer..good luck !

The best thing is,it's an E-Bike! These things are selling well on Ebay,it seems..Mine folds,so it'll go in the back of the car.On a full charge,it'll go maybe 20 miles-great for a commute-it's a regular 5 speed bike with electric power assist-it will push you along at about 15mph on the flat, but you do have to pedal some on hilly stuff-If it were more powerful that you didn't need to pedal,it would be classed as a moped or motorbike, you'd need to tax, insure, and have government approved inspections on it's maintenance..For Me,it's the best of both worlds-I can get some exercise, save petrol, and not be worn out when I get there!

You are using your brain now.. That is great, think of the gas money you are saving.. You are really looking to the future and will be saving tons of money on gas and electricity.. I will remember about the free listing days should I get back on there.. Thanks so much and have a great day..

I have used ebay quite a bit in the past selling but more buying. But since the change in the payment where you will no longer be able to direct deposit into a bank account or send a money order or cheque, but now have to either go through paypal or COD. No choice was given and has dealing through paypal costs to transfer money out to me it is another greedy rip off. I have bought and sold mostly books but shall not be dealing with ebay anymore.

Ebay is, at times, its own worst enemy.. There is getting to be too much greed going on in the world today and it is not really good for business.. Thanks for the thoughts and have a great day..

I continue to sell on eBay albeit sporadically. I sell English & American porcelain, etchings, some art pottery and a lot of books. I also sell books on Amazon. I use eBay for the older, rarer non reading copy books that don't do well on Amazon. Right now, I'd have to say that eBay is doing okay and Amazon seems to be slowing down (or it hasn't picked up yet.)

I hope your sales continue to go well.. I did enjoy the listing and selling on ebay but it seemed to be getting out of hand with the fees and the dishonest buyers.. Thanks for the comments..

We tried selling things on there for a short time but didn't have much sucess. We didn't have high end, in demand items so that may have been the majority of the problem. It was costing an average of $1 to list an item and we only ended up with a few dollars profit per item at best...half our stuff didn't sell the first time and had to be relisted and half the relisted items never sold. I have considered doing my own thing with it but I want it to be a secret and haven't worked that out yet. Right now I have just been buying some fabric which I will make into quilts to sell either at a local craft show or on etsy.

Good luck with your quilts, they are usually in high demand, especially if they are handmade.. The American market is flooded with the ones that are made in China to look like quilts but they are not good quality.. thanks for the comments.. Thanks for the comment

I had a store last year and gave it up after slowing down. Sales were okay, but I really wanted to sell my handmade jewelry and knew Ebay wasn't the place to do it. Once I found a site and established my store, I spent too much time promoting and my Ebay store fell by the wayside...no sense in paying for a store when you have nothing listed. I'm going to start selling some sports memorabilia on Ebay again. I've spend some time looking at sold items and the prices are about as expected. I still do buy on Ebay and the catagories I look to buy in, are selling at around the same prices or above from the past couple of years.

I appreciate your comments.. I am glad that you have found a site and established your own store, that must be so much fun and I hope profitable.. Buying on ebay can sometimes, be better than selling on ebay.. Good luck in your store and its future.. Donna

yes but what if when you want something no one has sold it before and so it becomes blind trust, there is no compensation for ebay if you get swindled, I know there are good people on ebay, but I have so little money that I cannot take the chance.

Everyone on ebay isn't bad but the ones that are ruin it for everyone else.. I worked hard on ebay, I sold under james1949, but I am no longer a registered user.. Anyone can check my feedback and see that I tried as hard as I could and worked as hard as I could.. I was completely honest in my auctions, I described every little detail about my items, I put plenty of pictures and I charged the exact shipping cost.. I was fair and reasonable, but so many weren't fair and reasonable, they are the ones giving ebay a bad name.. It is good to be leary of ebay and the strangers selling on there.. It is also good to check the feedback before purchasing anything.. Better to be safe than sorry.. Have a great day and thanks for the comments..

It is hard to part with your hard earned money without knowing who you are giving it to.. I did have 1599 feedbacks when I quit but that has gone up to 1663 now but I had at least 2375 auctions on ebay because that was the number of feedbacks that I had left for others.. Not everyone leaves feedback for the auctions, if they did leave it for every single auction, then people would have a better idea of who they were dealing with..

It has been and still could be a profitable business for some, but ebay has gone up on their fees so much that ebay is the only one making the big profits.. And you have to watch out for unscrupulous buyers.. You can be cheated big time on ebay..

I have had some success selling things on ebay. The only thing that worries me when I sell on ebay is trying to figure out how much to charge for shipping. I usually try to guess the weight, not knowing how much the box and packing will weigh. I have not noticed any sales down, though some things may not bring as good a price now as they once would. I don't think there has been much drop, though, because of the large number of buyers. If you have a product that many people want, you'll get more for it.

When I was selling, I sold a huge variety of items.. Most were yard sale items that I had found just to sell on ebay.. Some I purchased for a couple of dollars and sold for over a hundred dollars.. I have never tried purchasing new items to sell on ebay because I didn't figure the profit would be that much.. The shipping charges need to be figured using a good scale, because you can lose a lot of your profit by just miscalculating the shipping.. Thanks for the response and have a great day..

i have sold some stuff on ebay but i know that ebay does slow down when the weather gets a little warmer, also another factor that ebay has slown down some is their high listing fees..while ebay has probably the most viewers, it also has the highest listing fees anywhwere!

I noticed that especially when I was checking out some Beanie Babies for a friend, she wanted me to see if they were selling now, so when checking ebay, I noticed that there were hundreds of Beanie babies listed but none getting bids.. So Ebay was making a killing on all of the fees when sellers listed the beanies but no one was getting bids on them.. The ebay market was flooded with beanies.. The only one making money on these listing was ebay.. The sellers weren't getting bids even if they started them out at 0.01 and inexpensive shipping.. so with the thousands of beanies listed, can you imagine how much ebay made off of them alone..

I sold on ebay for awhile then quit because of the fees. At the beginning of this year I started selling again. My goal was, and still is, to list 1 item per day. So no, I'm not making big bucks, but also don't have that much to list either! I am selling mostly books right now...mostly school books. I always hit the library's $1 a bag sale. I start all my items at .99. A lot that do get bids, that is all they sell for too. They lowered the insertion fees but upped the final value fee. I suppose it is a help for the items that don't sell, but otherwise not really. I have my ebay page is several traffic exchanges and I post my daily listing in my daily blog. I think still the biggest problem is that not enough are seeing my stuff. Ebay recently changed the coding on individual auction pages and they break frames so all I can promote is the list, and not each item. Marsha

Just an add on thought. I am really upset that they no longer allow us to sell teachers editions. As a homeschool mom I know how important it is to have the TE. Ebay however claims that there is no guarantee that the person buying isn't a child using the TE to cheat. Blah! A few years back I did really well selling lots of 500 coupons on ebay too, then they did away with letting us do that. You can still post coupons, but no more than lots of 100 with no more than 20 of a certain coupon. With the fees and postage costs I can't see why ppl are still listing coupons! Marsha

I wish you luck on ebay but the way things are being changed around, ebay is still going to be the big money maker, never the sellers.. If sites such as ebay and Paypal weren't so greedy, then everyone could make a decent profit.. Thanks for the comments..

Well, I did have some bad experiences on ebay but this discussion will help me to make up my mind as to whether I will try it again or not.. I tried to be 100% honest and give good service, but there are too many people who really don't care and they ruin it for others.. Thanks for the post.. Have a great day..

I sold quite a bit for a few years and did ok, mostly name brand sweaters and such. I quit a few years ago because I divorced, moved, and lost my source of supply. I also went back to work full time so didn't have the spare time to mess with it. I'm not working now again and could really use the money, but I still don't have a source for decent things to list. I've also heard that the new fees and feedback structure are making it more difficult to get sales/make a decent profit. Good luck!

A few years ago i sold quite a few things on ebay, but the problem was by the time the item was listed and the fees had been paid, and then the item was sold and it had to be packaged and posted i dont think for me that the whole thing was really worth it.My daughter did it for a while, she said she ended up doing it really more so because she liked doing it,but as for making any money, she made very very little.I dont really think that i ever made very much either, but it was enjoyable while i was doing it though. But i must admit that sometimes the packaging and the posting got to me a little bit!!!

If you really want to do a job and do it good, then it takes all of that posting, packing and shipping, but you do want something to show for your efforts, such as a profit.. But ebay has gotten so greedy that they are the only ones making money.. It is a great concept and will probably be around for a long time, but I would like to see more competition for ebay, then they may lower their fees..

I had thought about putting some items up on EBay but had heard bad things about the feedbacks etc hurting sales so I decided to just give the things to my daughter for her choice as to what to do with them. I had bought about 50 bottles of Avon products at an auction for just a few bucks. They were colognes and perfumes in the decorative bottles and all still had the fluids in them. I researched and found most the same items I had went for anywhere from $5 to $45 a bottle and was interested until I read the bad reports etc about EBay. So I can not offer answers but am very interested in seeing some answers, opinions, and or experiences posted here. Thanks friend. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Some of the items that I sold on ebay were purchased at yard sales for about $2.00 each and I can give 4 examples, right of the top of my head, of my $2.00 items that went for over $100.00 each.. One of my first auctions was for a bottle of Elizabeth Arden perfume which was discontinued and it sold for $102.50, I had purchased it at a flea market where I set up for $2.50.. Well, needless to say I was hooked on ebay.. But over time, ebay got greedier and it seemed as if you were doing nothing but paying fees and buying gas to go to the post office to stand in a huge long line with your arms loade down with packages just to get them mailed.. Shipping costs even went up higher.. The sales went down as more people started selling on ebay and instead of a few of each item, there were hundreds of them, now, I do believe, it is easier to buy on ebay that to sell.. I do have a few more of the discontinued fragrances that I would like to sell on ebay but really not sure if I want to get started again.. I will just have to wait and see.. Have a great day grandpa.. That sound good, I never had a grandpa, both had passed away before I was born.. So, can I borrow the car tonight grandpa??

I recently sold quite a few things on eBay (within the past 2-3 weeks). The fees have grown quite a bit. I sold a good amount, but between eBay and PayPal fees, over $100 was removed.

I agree. There is no reason that eBay has to keep hiking their fees. If they would have left them alone, some sellers would not have abandoned it so they would be making the same amount of money (if not more). I can't see eBay having that many expenses... server equipment, upkeep and programming. I have no idea how many employees they actually have. If you can get your buyers to pay via Check, Money Order, or another method than PayPal, you may not do too bad. Paying the fees on both systems (eBay and PayPal) is getting out of control, IMO. I've never really used Craigslist, but I'm not a fan of it as you can really only sell to your local area. It's time to start looking around for an eBay alternative.

sales have been down. i was mailing out items every day(1-4) pieces at that. then i had nothing for almost a month, even though the items that i had on sale where all brand new. so when the sales went down i found a different site to sell on where you only pay yearly and no listing fees and you do not have to keep relisting your items. and now they are trying to keep sellers from leaving negatives for those bad buyers but buyers can still leave negative for the seller.

I don't like the new feedback system as one of the last negatives that I got was from a buyer who had broken the bottle of perfume and said that it was broken in shipping but there was only a tiny small drop of perfume on the envelope, not a whole bottle full, how could a good sized bottle of perfume spill on an envelope without leaving signs of it spilling on there.. Paypal found in her favor and I had already left a positive feedback for her, so then she got by with leaving a negative for me.. I had insured the item with my own money but she sent it back to me instead of following the procedure that the post office required, so she got her money back, I was out my money and she got a positive feedback while I got a negative.. That was so wrong.. The more that I read, the less chances of my going back on ebay are..

I used to sell quite a few bits and pieces on eBay, but not for a few years now. There are now more and more business sellers on eBay, which I think makes it harder for the individual who is just wanting to sell their personal bits and bobs. Eventually I found that the money I was making was not worth the time it was taking me to list, pack and send things. It was OK when I had plenty of time in the evenings and no other pressures on my time, and it came in handy as a little extra pocket money, but then I came to resent it. good luck if you do go back to eBay. I understnad that the ratings system has changed since I was there last, and that many sellers are upset about this.
@GreenMoo (11834)

I think your experience is an example of eBay becoming more and more a place for businesses to sell their wares. Buyers tend to forget that there are real live people with lives to live on the other end of their transaction.

My ratings were always pretty good up until my mother got sick and I had to spend a lot of time with her and couldn't get to the post office everyday, but I always made sure that I sent personal emails to each person to explain and ask if it would be ok to ship their packages a day or so later, they were all still shipped in good time.. Even if they had said that it was ok, they would leave comments on my feedback such as, "slow shipping", or "shipping was a bit slow" and it looked bad on me, even though I had emailed them and explained why I couldn't get to the post office as soon as the auction ended, my mother was dying at the time, there was still comments such as this left for me.. I am pretty sure that with all of the responses that I have gotten to this post that I will not be back on ebay soon, if at all.. I believe ebay has changed for the worse, not the better.. I do appreciate your comments and it has helped me to make up my mind.. Have a great evening and thanks
