If you have taken a course online did you feel it was as good as, better or worse than taking the course in a traditional classroom? Why?

No, I have not done any course like that. But I think classroom study is much practical, face to face knowledge than online courses.

You are correct, for many people face to face learning in a classroom is best. However, for people who like to go at their own pace, as mentioned above, as well as for people whose jobs or other classes conflict, time-wise, with the classes they need, online courses are beneficial. Thanks for your comment.

I have only taken one online class, it was a really simple poetry class. The system used for the class was a bit strange to get used to but it was pretty convenient. i personally like online classes alot. I plan on taking a couple courses online next semester. I would recommend it to everyone.

The mechanics of delivering the courses are improving. The improvments found in the upgrade to the WebCT software, that we use where I teach, between when I took the training course in WebCT and when I began using it to teach was a major step forward. Thanks for your comment.

I took online courses but I didnt like it. I rather sit in a classroom and listen to the teacher and take notes. I couldnt concentrate when I took online couses. I didnt do good as other classes I took in classroom.

Yours is a complaint I often hear from students. Online classes are not for everyone just as traditional classes are not for everyone. Thanks for your comment.

I did almost my entire senior year of college online. There are some advantages. For me personally, it was not having to speak out in class, which makes me nervous. It was also good to have the lectures written out, which allowed me to go over points instead of trying to keep up with notes. The biggest disadvantage is another personal one. If I had to actually go to class and know that a professor might call on me to answer a question, or give a pop quiz, that made me more likely to try and keep up with the work. I found it was much easier to fall behind when you could do the work or "attend" class and read the work at the same time.

Thanks for your comments. I have noticed that I do have a fair number of students each semester whom I barely hear from all semester and then I either get the whole semester's work at once (from the looks of it they did all of it the day they submitted it) or pleas for an incomplete.

Good topic for a discussion. Just the other day I was searching around online for a Spanish online course since I live in Los Angeles and could benefit from learning some Spanish. I joined earlier in the year a site called Virtual University and signed up for two classes on grammar to help me with my writing since I was doing an ebook and wanted to help my son with his homework. I paid $20 for the courses and only did it a little bit as I kept forgetting and could not get the assignments done. I would check them out though as they have a wide variety of refresher courses: http://www.virtualuniversity.com Good luck

Thanks for the comment and the link. Did the course you took include a feature that let you speak and have the computer correct your pronounciation? I teach economics and don't need that feature but the WebCT courseware that we use to deliver online courses has that capability and the college I work at actually delivers courses in Spanish with pronounciation as well as grammar and vocabulary.

I have taken a few online courses..mostly at work.. What I've found is that for courses where its just a lot of content that needs to be delivered.. and is being done for many students.. and there is less ambiguity, online courses are very convenient. The content being more or less constant.. it allows the students to go at their own pace..and with the ability to email questions, the student is totally in control.. however when things have to be explained a lot along the way, I have thus far not found any good course.. but I am always open to trying out new ways of learning :)

I would have liked to take classes on line. I live in rural Wisconsin and had to drive 1 1/2 hours one way to take graduate courses. Think of the time and money I could have saved if I could have taken the course on line. Some of the course I took for my Masters Degree were nothing more that the professor giving us info and not much responce from the class. Making use of forums on line and email we could have gained more out of the course. My youngest son would have done much more in High School if he could have taken some courses on line.

Studying at home - man reading
Yes I have and I felt it was everybit as good as taking it in a classroom, if not better. When taking it in the comfort of your own home you dont have the distractions you normally get from being in a school - the bells, students changing classes, slamming doors and windows, etc. If you want free online courses, go here and choose one: http://www.free-ed.net

Wow, I guess I'm a bit late in answering this one huh? I just signed up.. so that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :)~ I am currently taking online classes at RCC in southern Oregon. Some of our programs are affiliated with the University of Phoenix's online teaching. The WebCT program is great! I am 47 years old, so I opted for the online curriculum verses the traditional class setting. In this town the kids are into fashion and looks, if you wear something they don't like, they tend to be rude and make snide remarks. I was at the book store getting my books for this term and overheard a couple of gals gossiping about others who were in line buying books. Not only did they make derogatory remakes about clothing, but they snickered at the idea of older folks going back to school. You should have seen their faces when they glanced behind them and seen me(an older person) standing within arms reach. Other reasons I prefer the online setting is I can work at my own pace, I don't have to wait for the teacher to repeatedly repeat the instructions to students who weren't listening when the directions were given the first time or worry about how far away I have to park and if I'm going to be late due to traffic snarls. The teachers I have had so far in my online classes are great about responding the same day or the very next morning to any questions I may have. I've been attending for 3 terms now and dread the time when I have to actually attend a classroom setting. I am majoring in business and not all my required classes are offered online :(
