Your Catchphrase

Sometimes people have a word, or a short line they say repeatedly. When I was a teenager my mom tried to break me from always saying 'good grief.' For my sister, it was trying to get her to quit saying 'whatever.' Of course since we were teenagers we were mostly saying our little catchphrases in a sarcastic way, when we really should have just kept our mouth shut. There is one person I know who constantly says duh. I don't know if they are aware of it or not. Do you have a 'catchphrase' you seem to say all the time? Do you know anyone who does, and is it annoying or just funny?

Ugh! my niece says "whatever" and it is annoying. Sh ehas been living with my mom for over a month now and now has my little sister who is 7 saying it. I hate that word.Especially if it is said snottily. So I have it outlawed in my house it is considered a cuss word here. I know that is silly but it is hte only way I can try to break her from saying it. I have another niece that is always saying "my bad" If I said those things growing up I would have felt the broadside of my parents hand upside my head or a switch on my behind. I did have the habit if saying "Yeah right" and Oh my god" but have broke myself mostly.

I remember how annoying I was as a teenager. I've apologized for all the 'whatevers' I inflicted upon my parents.

Yeah, for me it has always been oh my goodness. My parents would have had a fit if I had said oh my god.

My 2 yo grand daughter started saying "oh my god" all the time. Her mother and other grand parents say that constantly. So I correct her all the time with "oh my goodness" ...now about 3 months later, she says "Oh my goodness" and seldome does a "oh my god" come out of that precious mouth - at least at my house!

I have caught myself saying this word at the end of sentences, but my friend and her mom are really bad about saying it too. We say "so". It's usually when they have run out of things to say in a conversation. Especially if we are on the phone. If she has finished what she has to say, she will say it. It's really annoying. It's not like they say it alot during the conversations, it just kinda breaks the silence. When I was a teenager, I said "like" alot. I find myself doing that sometimes now as an adult.

As annoying as it is to you, I just have to laugh. I know exactly what you mean. It does make people sound like airheads whether they are or not, but it is a very hard habit to break. She may not every completely get over it, but it probably will get better.:)

Kind of like the word "like". My 8 yo grand daughter says "like" constantly when she talks! Every third word is "like". Now this kid, since she has been about 4, could carry on a conversation more intelligently than many adults, so she is quite the conversationalist. But "like" is so constant that as much as I love her, I just wnat to shake her and hopefully get some of those "likes" to pop out! It is really annoying! And the expansion to "and its like...." Yeah, its like finger nails on the black board!!!!

Good Morning Amber! I used to be bad at saying "Lordy Mercy" but I felt convicted about saying it because it really is taking the Lord's name in vain. Now I just say "Mercy". I'm sure I say it more than I should though. Take care!!

SheliaLee - I used to say "Lordy Mercy" too and also "Lord have Mercy". For the same reasons, I have tried to stop - pretty sucessful, but they both still come out. But when they do in front of my grand kids I follow it with, "Jesus help me" or something like that to disway them from thinking anything wrong.

I've had many catchphrases over the years, but now I usually say "it is what it is". I think that pretty much sums up a lot of things that happen in life that we have no control over and, in a way, it is an admission that we just don't have much control over a lot of what happens in life. I've learned to be more accepting of that fact as I've gotten older.

I have that same version for "whatever". Yeah, I'm 51 and just now starting to use that word!! But not in the "valley girl" way, just more a "good grief can we please move on" whatever.

These days we say 'zip it', 'stop running', sit down and wait quietly' etc etc. Think I need to record us growling at our girls so that I can play it back and save my voice!

Ya know, I think I say "ya know" too much. I'm sure I do, just don't know I'm saying them until they have left my mouth. Catch phrases are like that, stuff that come out when you don't think about it. Really, they are little more than filler, like "ahhhs" and "errrs" and "un huhs" to let people know you are listening.

Oh man, in school we would get a lot of points deducted from our speech if we uttered any 'uhs'. My teachers and professors up into college were really not tolerant of that. So I tried really hard to leave those out, but it's filler!

I have more than one. One is also "duh" and another is "oh brother". What's ironic is that I found the second one rather annoying years ago whenever an aunt of mine would say it. She said it so often it drove me nuts! LOL As much as I love her I wanted to tell her to shut up (though I never did). And now I say it! I don't mean to, it just comes out. And guess what? I drive myself nuts! LOL I rarely say duh, except for when I am being sarcastic and feeling silly.

OOPS! I meant to say "oh boy", not "oh brother"! I don't know what I was thinking when I put that. Duh!

Catchphrases can be annoying, but the thing that used to really annoy me was a while back when everyone started doing those quotation marks, you know, making those motions with two fingers on both hands to mean quotations on a statement of theirs, that was meant to be sarcastic. I knew a few people who thought they were really smart that used to do that all the time. Sometimes when they weren't looking, I'd mimic them in an exaggerated way.

I used to always say 'ya think', and never really realized how much until my oldest daughter pointed it out. I seemed to stop using that catch phrase as easily as I started, without really thinking about it. However, she did find a baseball cap one time when she went on a weekend trip, and you guessed it, on the front there it was 'ya think' lol. I don't ever say it anymore but I do sometimes where the cap, when it seems to just be that kinda day lol.

When I was training, I spent a lot of time working with a lady who always said "you know" at the end of almost every sentence ... I didn't realise I was picking it up, until my family started teasing me! After our training finished, we kept in contact but I managed to lose the "you know" habit. Until we met up for lunch, then it would start all over again! I am sure I've had quite a few catchphrases, I'm going to take more note of what I say and report back :)

I changed schools in 10th grade and everyone in my class always used the word 'stinkin'. So I started picking up on it too. It would be, "I hate this stinkin' show.' It never seemed to annoy my family, but I started annoying myself!

I don't have any catchphrase. My one relative is always saying the word 'actually' & the other always says 'O God'. When I was in collage our lecturer used to say 'Got it?' after every 2,3 sentenses & I remrmber we were counting that phrase in a single period of that lecture.

I picked up the "whatever" phrase in my 20's (from the Clueless movie) and it stuck for about ten years. Unfortunately, I used it after I got married, too! Trust me! That phrase does not bode well with men! I found that one out quick. My spouse would be talking to me and I'd say, "Whatever!" and not even realize I'd said the word. And one day he said, "Whatever? As in you don't care. Just whatever is OK! Don't dismiss me like that." And I had no idea I'd been dismissing his comments so rudely. Whatever, was just my word for "That's how it goes!" I stopped saying it after that and we rarely argue anymore. But words are always taken differently by the person hearing them, than the person saying them. Thanks for this very insightful and thought provoking discussion!

That is a good point. I don't think we often realize how other people take our words, even if they are casually said.

I always say "Welcome to my world" My youngest son use to say "Burn" but he stopped after his brother inlaw told him he was going to burn him everytime he said it. He stopped real quick. I don't think he would have burnt him but my son didn't know that. My daughters have the habit of saying "Bite me". My husband likes to say " I tell you what". We are still waiting for him to tell us "What"......lol

I have a couple that I say all of the time...enough so that my kids have even started saying them! When I get really aggravated with someone, I will say, "Pull your head out!" (you guess where they need to pull it out of LOL). The other is what I call my "cuss phrase", and half the time I don't even really realize that I've said it until I catch people looking at me as if I had lost my mind...."God bless America!" Hey, it's a positive sounding phrase isn't it? Teeheehee!

I have found myself saying "oh, god save the queen!" when disgusted. Why I dont' know...that is, why I say that I don't know, not why doesn't god don't save the queen! But it just comes out sometimes. I don't cuss so things just come out oddly in other ways!

Hmmmm....well, one "phrase" I use a lot especially when I'm angry at some stupid mistake I've made on the computer is one I can't even repeat here...LOL. A more word friendly phrase I tend to use though is Holy Moly. I sometimes catch myself using a phrase my friend uses...don't know if I can even spell it as it's really not a real word.. ay yay yay....that's about the closest I can spell it

I have a habit of saying...Cool! and that is so outdated! I think most people do have a catch phrase they use but the worst one I ever heard was a fellow employee who always said..And that...at the end of everyone of her sentences....I just wanted to slap her sometimes! LOL...

I say "cool beans" to my grand daughers all the time (8 and 2) and they have picked it up and say it when they get excited! AS far a slapping someone when they say the same thing over and over, all the time....I can't type it as it is nasty and the first word starts with an f and the second starts with a m. My boss woud say this CONSTANTLY and over the good or the bad! She said it so often that I found my self saying it and not even realizing it!! I got really mad about that! I mean it just came out as normal words! I quit the job not long after that, thank goodness the vocabulary stayed at her office!

Funny you should ask! I say "oh, for cryin' in a bucket" often in front of my 2 grand daughters - I don't cuss at all, but some times things just get out of control and I have to say something but with them right there, I won't say something that they shouldn't say, so "cryin' in a bucket" not only lets me vent, but shows them they dont have to say bad words when things go wrong and since it is so silly, it lightenes the load and we get a couple smiles along the way! Now both of them say it and they get some laughs and some praise for not saying any bad words!

Hi AmbiePam, I gues my one is 'eh!' I do it a lot at the discussions and can't seem to help it. My son thoug instead of saying 'don't talk to me' or I am talking to you' says 'don't talk at me' and I am taliking at you' and no matter how many times I tell him he still says it. 'Whatever' is an expression that really annnoys me cos it is as if the person couldn't really be bothered about it. Ellie :D
