I don't feel like my dishes are really getting clean!

This past week, we had a bottle of Sunlight dish detergent in the house. And every time, I hand washed dishes, I didn't feel as if they were getting clean. There was always residue of grease or food. So I had to rewash every time. Today we got some Concentrated Dawn Anti-bacterial and already I've noticed a real difference in the cleanness of my plates and cups. Having clean dishes in my house is of utmost importance. What type of dish detergent do you use for hand washing dishes to get rid of tough grease or food particles? Do you have any frugal or money saving home care tips? Please share. Thanks!

beautyqueen 26 hi yes dawn is really good. but my son buys with the idea of going green so ours is some brand I am not really familiar with but it does get glassware and such really clean and grease free so it does a good job.just checked for fun,its Trader JOes'brand. We have a Trader Joes about a block from our apartment so we often shop there. It really does do an excellent job of getting dishes clean. My only frugral tips are use baking soda and vinegar in cleaning things and you wont be using harmful chemicals.

Thank you for the tips. Sometimes I use baking soda on my dishes to get out tea stains from a glass. It really works great!

We usually use Palmolive or Ajax or another cheap brand of dish detergent. For the dishwasher we try to get Electrosal. We bought Sunlight for the dishwasher once and I noticed that I had to wash about half of the dishes so we don't buy that anymore. We bought Sunlight clothes detergent and that didn't work that good either. I noticed a lot of the detergent where it didn't dissolve. So I stopped using that because it wasn't getting the clothes washed off and I was afraid it might do something to the washer or the dryer. I wouldn't buy Sunlight anymore.

Thanks for telling me about your experiences with Sunlight. I thought it might be my imagination. But I'm sure that it didn't work good! I don't usually use that brand anyway. Happy to be done with the bottle. I was constantly adding more for improved cleaning power and it just wasn't enough!

I had some dishwashing liquid a couple of weeks ago that left a floral taste to my cups, it didn't make my cup of tea taste very good...I don't think adding a little vinegar in the water hurts, that is wonderful stuff...

I'm going to try the vinegar! I've heard that it works wonders on dishes and hair! I have also heard that it works to get the food taste off of the Foreman grill! I have not tried that yet. But I will! Thanks for the tips.

We have been in our home for about 6 years now and our dishwasher was not cleaning as well as we though it should. So we saved and went to the local store and bought a new one. Turns out that due to trying to save the environment dishwashers are not as good as they used to be and now I own a great dish drying rack. I am all for doing my part for the environment but I want my new machine to do its job. Now I wash a lot by hand and use Kirkland dishsoap. It is sold at Costco in a gallon container, but it is cheap and great at cutting the grease. We also splash a bit of vinegar in the rince water for a good finish and killing any germs I might have missed. Works great, now if we could quit using dishes. Maybe I should cook in one pan and we can all sit around the stove and eat from it. If we all keep the same spoons each meal we could all just lick it clean and then I would only need to clean one pan each meal.

You are so funny! But I have solved the mystery of how to cook with no pots at all! I simply wrap up my meat and diced veggies in foil and add spices and grill on the George Foreman grill machine. Comes out perfect everytime. I haven't cleaned a pot in two months! I can even cook wicked good noodles in the microwave! I get rave reviews for my tuna noodle casseroles and my Italian noodle dishes! My spouse never complains. But unfortunately, I do wash lots of plates and bowls and silverware! That is my only complaint! Thank you so much for sharing your time with me today. Always nice to speak with you.

I wish I could use Dawn but I am so allergic to things that I can only use Sunlight or Ivory dish soap and generally go with Sunlight sometimes I do have rewash the odd dish but this is generally only when my husband does the dishes. Really, I have no choice in the matter and know I will not be getting a dishwasher any time soon so I'll stick with my sunlight! ~Heavens~

I completely understand! I have a skin allergy with certain detergents as well. There's even one detergent that gives me migraines so I can't use that one either. So ironic how many things a person can be allergic to!

I also use the Dawn Anti-Bacterial dishsoap. I like that it suds up really good and the dishes come out really clean. My Mom is nuts for Palmolive but I don't care for it and my hands break out whenever I use it at her house. I'd actually pay a little more for the Dawn b/c I know it works well and is worth the money. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

It's interesing how some brands work beter than others. My husand has a dish washer in Arizona, and that gets the dishes really really really clean. He also has a garbage disposal. I really missed all of those comforts, when I came back home to Canada. My apartmet is i a really old building, and it's not equipped for all of the modern coneniences.

I know! I used to have all those lovely modern day conveniences, too! In our other apartment everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) was absolutely brand new, state of the art. But here in our little house, things are so turn of the century! And I mean turn of the 20th century! But we have good clean running water, electricity, and all the other stuff most other people do, but no dish washer or garbage drain disposal. So I will not complain over a few tiny inconveniences! But I can still post about them, happily!

Morning, beautyqueen26.....I use Sunlight, have for over 35 years! Hot, hot water and never have had probs...Vinegar in the rinse water. Reasons for Sunlight, most of the homes (incl. current home) has been on a Septic field. Sunlight is (was the first liq. det.) to be environmentally friendly! It does not destroy good bacteria! And as you know, there is good bacteria, as well as bad! Anti-bacterials know no difference...so I avoid them! When you also have to be frugal with water, your grey water (when using Sunlight) can be used on your garden! My hair has never been cleaner, than when washed with Sunlight, rinsed with vinegar water. A few drops of Sunlight in the bathtub...and it's whistle clean we drained. Here's hoping you have a "sunlit" day! Hope you read this post.....I am dying to know where you got your Penguin? My son & I own a 19' Power Boat....we call her "Little Penguin", and your's is just the carricature picture I would like to have painted on her stern. Thanks for sharing!

beautyqueen I must say that maybe I am not loosing my mind after all.I thought the very same thing while using Sunlight dish soap but I just shrugged it off as another one of my mind playing tricks on me. I didnt like the Sunlight for the dishwasher either.I have returned to Dawn Anti-bacterial it is a little higher but it cleans the dishes better.I am like you it is very important to have clean dishes. You have a great night.

We use the same as you, Dawn Anti-bacterial. We would think of using nothing else but dawn. In my opinion that is the best detergent on the market today.

I use Palmolive. I noticed that some dish detergents are stronger than others. With some I need to put more in the sink to get the same cleansing effect. But with the Sunlight you should have gotten it clean, but it takes a greater dose. Ultimately, a cheaper detergent can end up costing you more, because you'll need to use more. Anyhow, I try to stay away from anti-bacterial as it is not necessary for stuff like that and it's those kinds of things that add to our Superbug dilemma. As another poster stated, hot water is also important. And clean brush/sponge to clean your dishes.

o.0 you should change the dish cleaner... if it leaves grease in your plate it didn't clean well.. sometimes even how many times you wash it using the same dish washer... it won't do any difference.

Hello beautyqueen26, I used Sunlight too but it was not up to my expectation. As you said, sometimes I can still feel the grease or food on my kitchenwares. I am using different brand whenever I go out to do my grocery shopping.

I use Dawn it is the only detergent I will use. I have tried some others but they always leave a soapy residue and never get the dishes clean. Dawn is good at cleaning grease off of pans too so it is Dawn all the way for me. I use coupons and buy it at the dollars store to save some money.

Hi, beautyqueen. Yes, i have to agree with you. I have used different dish washing liquids for hand washing the dishes. I often buy off-brand, low-cost dishwashing liquids. I found residue on my pyrex glass measuring cup and could not get it off with any amount of scrubbing. I bought the Dawn grease fighting liquid detergent and that residue is now gone. I think the extra money is worth it. Maybe Dawn should give us all a bottle for doing a free commercial for them here! :-)

I usually always use Dawn or Palmolive. I have noticed, too, that the cheaper ones don't feel as clean. It also seems like it does take alot more even to get more bubbles..so what is the point if you have to use more.

Hi beautyqueen, I use a very normal washing-up liquid, but I make sure that the water is boiling before I pour it onto the dishes. After I have cleaned the dishes with a cloth, which is much better than any plastic brush (so long as you replace it regulary enough), I rinse the dishes off three times to remove the washing-up liquid. For chopping boards I sometimes clean them with a half of a sliced lemon, which is an old Italian cooking trick. Lemon is the ultimate bacteria killer and it is safe for humans. All the best. Umart
