What's your attitude towards your own writings?

Are you secretive or very public with it? I am secretive with mine and especially with my books. If I share any of it I share a piece that alone wouldn't give away the book but would be interesting enough for people to evaluate but only after I trust the person.. I figure that if I have a good thing going I don't want to risk it being stolen and it's way too easy to fake a date stamp to where it might be hard to prove later for a copy write issue. I have joined several places to write at but I also don't write anything short other than poems and I don't really share them lol. So anyone else here VERY cautious on sharing their works?

No, I don't mind sharing mine. I have a blog which anybody can read. As for my novel, nobody's ever asked to read it and I wouldn't force it on anyone - so the problem's never come up.

I don't force mine on anyone either. What's the point if you want an honest opinion?

Sorry - I wasn't insinuating you were forcing it on anyone. I just write for my own pleasure, so I've never asked for a critique.

I have no problem sharing and if its stolen i would be proud to have written something good enough to be stolen. Besides i am not going to do anything with it besides write it.

Maybe after awhile you will do something with it. You could always submit it to magazines that do short stories.

If I am just logging, I'm super public. I don't keep many secrets, and there's very little that I WON'T write on line. LOL When it comes to the work I am going to publish, I don't share it with that many people. I want people to wait to see it until it's totally finished.

Well if I'm blogging then I'm as public to where my friends can see it but not just anyone if it's day to day stuff (I have reasons for this but I don't feel like going into a long story about it) But I was referring to when your writing to publish. To my even if you do share with everyone your books etc it's better to have it finished so you don't hear everyones opinions on how it should end

I have always been secretive with my writings. The only way that I'm not really worried about it is when I must write an assignment for school. All my other writings, I keep to myself. I don't even let my hubby read them. Once I receive my degree, I'm sure I will have to be more open with my thoughts, ideas, opinions, and writings. I'm working on becoming a teacher and want to do more with my degrees than just teach. I would love to be on a school board, write articles for Education Week magazine, or write a book to help teachers become better at educating. I think that I have anxiety about what people will say. I'm seeing a therapist for this. Year by year, it seems I've become more cautious about everything and my therapist says that it could make me one of those people who never leave the house. I don't want to be like that, but I do see it happening.

yeah i understand that.. i have anxiety so it would make sense that my secretiveness would be a side affect or caused by my normal anxiety.. im sure after your finished school you will feel more secure about it since obviously if your going to school then you arent perfect and are learning therefore there may be faults in your work.. one reason why i hate writing courses because they make you feel like you know nothing and a lot of them try to press what style they like onto you and if you do not follow it then you fail.. i think every one needs their own style

That's a good way of looking at it...thank you! I hope to be more confident once I get my degree, which will be at the end of next year. I'm even taking classes and trying to work at places that will build on me being more knowledgeable so that I won't seem so doubtful about what I say. Thank you for starting this discussion. Can you believe that I'm even afraid to start new discussions because I know that people will not respond?

That depends on what I'm writing and where, and what stage it's at. Ernest Hemmingway famously said 'All first drafts are ****', and he's right, I wouldn't let anyone near those. If you're doing poetry, it's worth banging them up somewhere like Helium or AC; you can maintain non-exclusive rights, and they're pretty quick to come down on plagiarism. That way you can get some feedback, and possibly money, too. I write mostly fiction and editorials, but I do the odd thing on Ficlets, where you publish bits of stories no longer than 1,024 characters. Great community for feedback, and anything put up there is protected by the Creative Commons License.

Never heard of ficlets. I don't seem to like my own poetry much for some reason. I used to but now that I have gotten past the whole block of being able to not write anything long I don't think my shorter work is any good. Maybe I just feel that my writing has matured since then? I don't know.

I think everyone hits that stage, which is which it's nice to get another person's viewpoint on them. You are, after all, your own worst critic.

I write and not that many people read it. I like it better that way because I write for me, not for anybody else really. Eventually, I let people read some of the things that I write, but mostly it stays here on my computer and in my notebook. I think that if I want to share it eventually I have it available but i dont really feel like it now.

Hi friend, i like to be as secretive. I don't like to anybody's attention on my creation. Only once my creation published in any paper. That was our college magazine, poem about my own life. Everyone appreciate me and thereafter i am so called poet. thanks

Depends on the work and who I'd be sharing it with, and how well I think I wrote it, lol. I don't like to go back and read my own stuff, normally...so as to keep my perception of it from getting negative. But I talk about my works all the time, even if I don't share them. I do exercise caution and never share anything I don't think is good enough for someone to read, or if I haven't spoken with them about copyright. Most files keep a log of the dates they were modified..so I'm not terribly worried or anything about that.

Enails depend on the surface you're using, most of them do keep stime stamps though which're pretty decent as far as proof goes, but I'd keep several things as proof myself, as a percaution. I'm not so sure about on a disc, since it's not something I do alot of myself.

do the files still keep the correct dates even when burned onto a disk or emailed? i have always wondered since i would use that as proof even though that could easily be changed too

I am pretty secretive about anything I write, mostly because when I write it's more stuff that I'd rather just stay with me. I've written some songs before, not great ones, but I rarely share them because they are way too personal and private to me. Maybe if I was going to copywrite them at some point and then record them, but at that point they would be better, because I wouldn't bother using something that wasn't really good. So yea, I am protective with almost any of my writing, especially if it's journaling and stuff. Some people I wouldn't mind reading my songs and stuff, but for the most part I am like you and very cautious!

Actually, it's not a bad thing to be cautious, because there are people out there who will steal your work and use it for their own. So it's better to know that and keep your work to yourself until you publish it! :)

it depends, for example, after a quarrel with my girlfriend or some close friends, I will write some complaints secretivly in my blog but for others except them, they can read my complaints freely. so in a word, I usually write secretive to those who i write and pubilc to those have nothing to with what i write

The only thing I share is my fan fiction over at Fan Fiction . net. I think half of my writting is crap. But, people seem to like it. So I hope they like my original fiction. The original stuff I keep really close because I am paranoid about someone stealing it.

I am not that secretive. I am proud of what I do, and when I request critiques, I really want them. As for copyrights, they are almost meaningless as it is, and the Government of the United States is preparing to eliminate all copyright protection (http://ipaorphanworks.blogspot.com/) called the Orphan Works Act. It is set to pass Congress withing the next several months and will remove all of your rights to works you create. You will have no recourse through the courts, because it will be law.

Please sign up on that website, and petition your Congresscritters. This is insane. It will only benefit big business, who can steal what you do, and not be compelled to pay you for their infringement. It was stimulated by that Australian idikot that now owns the majority of the American press. This way, there is no way you can sue for infringement when he steals it. There are thousands of us that are on board here. I know that you haven't heard a word about this in the major American media...this is because they will win and we will lose.

When I usually write. It's usually way to short or way to long. Another thing with me is that I end up using "lol" in alot of my like commenting posts and I find it to be very unprofessional.

I know with me there is a big difference on writing things I would like to do something with later than writing and answering on here (thank god). Or are you saying you use "lol" in your work? I caught myself do that a few times lol. I think it's a curse with using technology today

I am quite secretive because I'm not so confident with my writings. I really feel the need to improve more and study more. Everyday is another day for us to improve and I am very positive that I will really show my writings in public in the future. Kudos.

i already self published my novel and i copyrighted it the cheap way, still in a sealed envelope in my file cabinet. i have excerpts from it on 2 of my websites and on bebo.com, but i used parts of it to tease people, not the whole thing to give it away. if anyone wants to steal it, i am not sure how they would use it in their book...their book would turn out totally different from my novel that it wouldnt make sense. no 2 book think alike and can create the same novel, not even twins. hollywood often twists the author book into their own movie that turns out different from the original novel.

OH, I so understand what you mean. I think it is the hardest thing for writers - those of us who are private and maybe shy, to let "everyone" see our inner most thoughts! Scary. But, then, if we want to become professional writers we need to find a way to do this. I'm still not sure I would put my writings (except blog type) out there where everyone can see. Especially if it is something I hope to sell, claim as mine. Because, yes, things get copied/stolen in that sense for sure.

I've always written for me. Never really thought of showing anyone. Of course, if I wanted to ever write a book, and make it so that the public knows, than of course. But I've never really shown my poems to anyone. As well as my writings.
