When making meat loaf, what do you add for filler?

I made some meat loaf for dinner last night and I was debating over weather or not to use oatmeal or bread crumbs for the filler. I started wondering what myLotters used for the filler in their meat loaf. What do you use? Bread, bread crumbs, crackers, oatmeal?

This is interesting, I have never heard of using oatmeal.. I have always wanted to try a different "filler", very cool, what does it do to the flavor? Does it make it too sticky? I think I will try this! I have always used either bread crumbs or like another poster said, bread soaked in milk. Very good ideas!

No, the oatmeal does not make the meatloaf sticky. I use a little more than 1/2 a cup when I am making mine. That is for about 1 1/2 pound of ground beef.

I normally only do 1 egg in my meat loaf, but I don't make a very big meat loaf either. My grandma used to add egg and oatmeal to her hamburgers too. It made them more like meatloaf burgers. YUM!

Its not something I make very often, (I'm more of a mock-haggis sort of girl if I'm looking to use up meat), but I would use oatmeal, an egg, absolutley masses of black pepper, a finely diced onion and a small chilli and some mixed herbs. Possibly barley if I wanted something really robust, but mostly oatmeal I think.

I don't make meatloaf very often either. Maybe once every few months. It is interesting so see what other people add to their meat loaf since there are so many ways to make it.

I use onion soup mix. Egg and plain oatmeal get thrown in too. But my sauce is always different. Sometimes it is salsa. Sometimes its ketchup or BBQ sauce. Whatever I have handy or am in the mood for.

I like to use Italian flavored bread crumbs and also throw in a pack of lipton powder mushroom and onion soup. They combined really give it a great flavor

I have done the onion soup mix in a meat loaf before. It gives the meat loaf a really good flavor.

The recipe I was looking at last night called for 3 pieces of bread torn into small pieces. I have never used bread before because I figured it would stay in little chunks. Now, I know. Soak it in milk first.

I do pretty basic ones. Besides the obvious meat and eggs I add in diced carrots and onions and sometimes potatoes. For the other stuff I sometimes use oatmeal but have found that I prefer cornmeal and instant potato flakes better.

I don't really make meatloaf - i think its a US thing? If I get sausage-meat ever I use it to make sausage rolls, either flavoured with leeks and cheese or sometimes with tomato and chilli! I would guess that breadcrumbs would be best as they would absorb some of the fat.

I use bread crumbs, and of course and egg. I also like to add chopped onions, garlic and green pepper. The veggies not only add flavor, but help to keep it moist.

I usually use a piece of bread. I tear it up very small though. It's what my mother used to do, and is she is, was a pretty good cook. My huby loves my meatloaf he thinks it's really delcious. I didnt think he liked anything better than salmon, but I think meatloaf is it.
