Would you consider yourself financially well off?

I consider myself poor. My husband makes decent wages, but I do not work and he supports a family of 7. We've always been poor, but we make too much money to qualify for any sort of assistance such as food stamps. We can't even get free lunch at school, so I guess we're not as poor as I think we are, but still we have a hard time making ends meet. We can barely afford our bills, and never have any extra spending money... to me, that is poor. I realize it could be much worse, so I am not complaining. But sometimes the future looks so dark. If we were forced to move we wouldn't be able to afford it. If we needed a new car (which we do) we can't afford it. We are always worried about things like that because we don't have emergency money.

Right now I'm poor. No doubt about it. I struggle every single month just to keep the electric paid for. My ONE "extra" I allow myself is internet. We don't have all those great cable channels, never (and I mean never) go to movies, and eating out is fast food - can't afford anything fancy. I have been "well off" in the past. My ex was a banker/stock broker. What I was awarded in my divorce was sold to pay off medical debt thanks to my disability. I get discouraged from time to time, but do consider myself lucky to at least have a roof over my head and family that loves me. Right now we are considering moving again. If I do I'll have to have family pay for my move and help me find a place to live. I hate that, but thats the way it is. I don't have to move, but they want me closer to them. So I guess the price for having ME is to pay for my move. LOL Guess they really do love me.

My husband's parents have helped us out when it comes to finding a place to live. They own the home we live in now, they gave us the down payment for the home we had before this, but that didn't work out. Before that we lived in a house his cousin owned... so we've really never been on our own. Someday hopefully we will be able to, but for now we need all the help we can get.

we are so in the same boat as you are. i am on sick leave due to being almost crippled from a car accident about 20 years ago (no cartlidge in my knees and constant pain) we have 2 daughters and my hubby works 2 jobs but still we are poor i need to go the dentist and get some work done, but we cannot aford this (no dental coverage). we also need a new vehicle and cannot afford to move. we do not qualify for much because it is based on last years tax assessment and last year we made about $20,000 more than we are now.

Here they go by your gross pay instead of take home. Problem is my husband's gross pay is about $300 more than he takes home. After taxes, 401K, uniforms, medical, and all the other dozens of deductions, we're left with almost nothing.

I was really well off when I was working. Then hen I got sick and then became disabled things got bad off. My 401k was drained in a year and a half to pay my medical bills. My wife took a second job but that only helped when they had here working full time. Then when the prices of gas started going up my wife found that she was working just to pay for gas so she ended up quiting (It was almost 100 mile round trip to the location they assigned her to even though she started working locally. Well then the money ran out. I was getting $200 a month and she was making $1500 a month with her primary job. We finally qualified for food stamps but it was only $85 a month and this was for a family of five in a high cost of living area. I finally won my disability case and we are doing much better now but according to national standards we are still under the poverty line. Yet after winning the disability case we were taken off the food stamps even though we are still below the poverty level.

Yes, food stamps tells us we are middle class. I think if we were middle class we could afford to buy a house and own a couple newer cars. As it is when we make a big purchase like that we need our tax refund to do so, and we have no money in our savings account at all. The ones I consider middle class are the ones who own their own house, paying their mortgage, and can afford to go to a movie on the weekend without blinking an eye. I wonder what food stamps considers them.... rich?

It must be. I can not figure out what they use as their base. It definitely is not based on the federal poverty level because if it was we would qualify.

By the world's standards, we're supposedly well off. Perhaps even by US standards. But... I don't work (because I can't). My hubby pays $600 a month in child support, plus medical insurance, 1/2 of medical bills, 1/2 of activities, and 1/2 of anything and everything his ex decides to bill him for... And we both have chronic illnesses and tons of doctor bills. In fact, one doctor group (that has each of our regular MDs and most of our specialists) just decided to fire us because we're taking too long to pay. Yes, we have good medical insurance, but those 20% things are driving us crazy. We don't eat out. We don't ever buy anything extra for ourselves or the house. We buy our clothes at Goodwill or Salvation Army. Sometimes I barely have enough for groceries, and I am supposed to be helping hubby eat healthy meals because of one of his maladies - diabetes II - and because he's trying to lose more weight. Buying healthy foods costs more, unfortunately. So...it's a hard question to answer. When the paper boy comes (we only get our little local weekly paper delivered) and I have to rob everyone's piggy bank, it's hard to think of myself as well off. When you live pay check to pay check this way, without ever being able to put a nickel away, it's scary. What if...there's an emergency. What if...my hubby can no longer work? I applied for disability myself 5 years ago. What if it took that long for him too???

$600 a month child support, plus half of whatever she wants him to pay??? Wow!! Where do I find an ex like that? I get a whopping $50 a month in child support for my oldest, and that's it, and it usually never comes. Lately I've been getting $30 payments every few weeks. It used to come like clockwork, then suddenly it stopped and I didn't get a payment for a long time, then I got a payment ever week as if he was catching up. Now he is supposed to pay $56 a month, but like I said, I've been getting around $30 and that's it.

Oh, I can understand your feeling poor. It is sad, though, that so many need help but make a few dollars over so they can't get food stamps or free school lunches. My daughter was in that situation with the food stamps once, so she never tried again. But last year, she found out she could have gotten 1/2 price lunches for all 4 of her children. She had never tried before her oldest son finished last year. So this past year, she got it for 3. Hopefully, she's still able to get it for the other 2 this year. It is hard when there is only one in the family working (she's a single Mom) and she quit her 18 year job to move closer to home with another job and took a big cut in pay. But I always look at all our circumstances from the stand point that, as long as we are healthy and have each other, and God, we are rich as can be!!

I agree with your last sentance there... however the government is making it too difficult for people to survive. We could possibly lose our home because our landlord hasn't paid the taxes, and then we'll be homeless because we can't afford to come up with enough money to move into a new home. Our economy stinks and we're all suffering because of it. It's such a shame!

I was kicking around the idea of suing the government, lol. I mean in this day of lawsuits, has anyone actually thought about suing the government for making our lives so difficult? Maybe that would be a nice eye opener. I wonder if any lawyers would try the case for me, and which part of government would I go for? LOL

You are so right. Our government needs to straighten up and help the people that really need help! Will be praying that your landlord pays the taxes so you won't be out of a home. I know that is frightening! The gas prices seem to be going down here, so hopefully things will get better. But I wouldn't bet on it with Congress like they are. Pelosi isn't going to let them vote on the bill that would help our economy/gas, etc. She knows they would vote FOR it. People are hurting and I think most of Congress is getting the message through emails/faxes and phone calls, and people aren't going to let up until they do something!

Many things have happened to the point that No I do not feel that I am Financially well off right now! My husband got injured and has not got money from workers comp for over 3 years. We are in the process of trying to get our money from them.. I feel that I may not be rich... but I am very blessed. And that is worth all the money in the whole world!

well i won't say i am too bad in my own way. i consider well off as someone who can afford the necessities and a little something nice once in a while. having a hard time making ends meet certainly do not qualify one as well off. that's the thing about these social 'safety net', it helps a lot of people but some needy are excluded because of technicalities. maybe they should consider counting income per head instead of household income. a family of two earning $70,000 a year can lead very different lives from a family of seven earning the same amount. maybe you might consider getting a part time job. or something that you can do at home. mylot is great but the payout wouldn't be enough for much. take care and i sincerely hope that your situation will improve as your children grow up. cheers ;p

Not really. I will not consider myself to be well off as of this moment. because I am still working my way up the ladder. That is why i am trying my best here on internet programs hoping that someday i make it big also. Just like of the most gurus here.

Up until recently, yes I considered myself poor, we are a family of 6 and every month would see us slip further and further into the overdraft until the bank called us in and tried to get us to put it on top of the mortgage. Well I did not want to do this and so I persevered chipping away at the bills we had. It took a while but I have now pulled us into the situation where the only debt we now have is the mortgage. My hubby earns a good wage, and we also are entitled to extra money through the children so we bring in a decent amount each month and then with the extras that we both do too we are getting somewhere. But it has been hard, like you there never seemed to be anything to look forward too, we always paid out more than we had and there was never any money for fun. Dont get me wrong, there is still not a fortune left over at the end of a month but now we see a bit more, and we can put a bit away and have the odd takeaway, but I know what you are going through believe me.

We're doing OK but if either one of us lost our job it would be really hard. Was talking to a friend in Indonesia though about how bad the economy is getting here in the US. He pointed out that if I lost my job my family would still be able to eat and over there that wasn't true. So I guess everything's relative and you're right, it could be worse. The worst is if you have no choices at all, no food, no prospects of work, nowhere to go. My brother's family is in the same boat as you and he does a paper route to make ends meet. The friend in Indonesia does all kinds of odd jobs, anything he can find. Maybe there is something you can do online or I don't know what to supplement your income a bit. Anyway I think the economy is going to get worse before it gets better (hope I'm wrong), so best of luck and hang in there!

I consider that my family is well off because we have a roof over our heads and food in the cupboards. We don't really have allot of money, but we've developed a lifestyle where we don't need too much. Once upon a time I had a well paid job and all the trappings that went with it, but I prefer living simply as we are.

I'm far from financially well off.I'm living from paycheck to paycheck. If I work hard and save my money with my retirement fund thean when i get older i should be financially well off to take care of my family.I'm only 35 years old so i still have a chance for financial freedom.

Im a single mom with 2 little girls 3 & 4 and i am considered poor. Extra money to buy things other than necessities whats that? Before i had kids i worked as an intern for a magazine & made $75 a month plus room & board. So i guess that taught me how to be creative and live on a budget. I dont feel poor. I am blessed to have an amazing group of friends & family. For example my girls go to a small preschool. Tuesday my oldest turned 4. Three of the teachers had presents for my daughter & the principal who i just adore asked me the week before if i was going to bring cupcakes because she would if i couldnt afford to. In some ways Im poor but in many ways im rich. I have a lot of websites i have found that offer assistance maybe one of them could help you. Let me know

Hey, I would be interested in getting that list of websites, I work full time in the IT field and my wife and I are still having trouble making ends meet. If we want to do something extravagant (like see a movie) we have to pay a bill or to late. That sucks, we really cannot keep up with our bills as it is, an emergency fund, ha!, that's a joke, and we don't even have kids.

I think that I am pretty well off, but then again I don't have bills or anything like that to worry about at the moment. I earn a lot online, and get some money (pocket money I guess) from my parents each month while I am at college. I think overall I get about £200 a month, which is good seen as I don't have to pay for my own food or anything like that. I wish my parents would let me contribute towards the bills, but unfortunately they won't.

i won't say that i am financially well off... but i won't say that i am poor as well... i will say that i am average and i am grateful for what i have and what God had given to me... as long as i can fulfill my basic needs, pay off my bills on time and still have some extra money for leisure and emergency, i am happy... i never think of being rich... take care and have a nice day...

No we are not poor. I just realized we never are. I learned from spending experience that no matter how much your money is, you will always end spending more than you can pay. when your earnings increases your spending way also changes.. But I think most of all right now is in crisis. Now we cannot afford the things we used to buy then, to think that it should have been the other way, by now we should be buying somethings that we cannot afford then. I really don't know, but something is really happening. everywhere you look there is poverty, there is shortage. I am from the country that is mostly agricultural, and yet we are experiencing rice shortage. So to make ends meet, we just lessen our rice consumption. I guess that's the only way you can cope up with what is happening.. less and less spending.
