Dirt Magnet

I call my a dirt magnet as literally five minutes after having had a bath he can look like he hasn't been near water for weeks LOL. Even his clothes can look the same. I have seen other kids that will be playing in dirt and still look clean and tidy so are some people just prone to looking scruffy whilst answers aren't, thoughts on this one please. Ellie :D

I hated getting dirty as a child Ellie. But somehow I always managed it. I didn't like it because I knew that it would involve much scrubbing later. I think that some people do attract dirt. Does them no harm and might even be good. I subscribe heavily to the theory of a pinch of dirt a day in your diet. So why not on the outside too?!!

I totally agree! And exposure to cold weather, too. Everyone's always afraid of their kids getting cold, that they'll get sick, when it's germs that do that. My youngest used to run outside, in his diaper, in the middle of winter, and still doesn't get all bundled up all the time, and is rarely sick.

I am the same too, the minute one of mine started crawling and putting things in their mouths I stopped steriliaing and they were never ill as kids but the germ free paranoid mum downstairs was at the doctors each week with hers as she never let any dirt near him. Builds up a resilence a bit of dirt a day eh! Ellie D:

This reminds me of something that happened back in the days when I would go to church camp. A little boy a year younger than me came back from church camp one summer, so proud of his tan. He saw his mom and was showing her how tan he was, and how he looked so good in his tan. Well, his 'tan' washed off pretty quickly, because the tan was not from the sun, but from the dirt!

Ah bless him he must have been quite forlorn when it all washed off. Thank you for sharing, that really made me giggle. Ellie :D

Hello ellie333, mother of the dirt magnet! I know what you mean--young children do tend to get in to things that expose them to dust, dirt, and all kinds of unknown icky stuff. You'd think they would have come into contact with every type of germ in existence by the time they reach 4 years old! Perhaps some kids are more curious than others and tend to get into things more. You know, maybe they just explore more than the average kid. Hang in there, they do eventually grow up and some even learn how to bathe themselves!

I have one of those, he is 6 years old. At the start of the summer hols he played out in the garden quite a lot and so needed bathing more. One of the occasions he went in the bath I noticed he had dirt on his neck and so I tried to wash it, and it would not come off, I scrubbed it, got him out, dried him and it was STILL there. Somehow the dirt had ingrained itself into his skin!! He is terrible, always mucked up to the eyeballs!

Oh its not just my son then, are you sure it wasn't tan inbetween t-shirt and hair line as my son has one of those too! The girls always seemed to manage to stay clean somehow, at least longer than five minutes. Ellie :D

Hmmm well I thought that myself at first, but this was like a tidemark under his chin and around his neck and it just looked like dirt! Funnily enough my eldest used to get it too when he was the same age, I used to have to scrub him to get it off too!

I think its a boy thing!!! Boys attract dirt. I dont have any children so I cant tell any stories but growing up my brothers used to be dirt magnets!! Especially my older brother who enjoyed climbing trees and such!!! I often wondered if there was any dirt left in the ground after he had been out!! lol Boys are just dirty and messy!!! ha ha

my nephews like that it's a strange thing isn't it when he was born he had such a lovely tanned colour to his skin but now he just looks grubby all the time. Very strange especially when he gets a tan even worse lol. Luckily my sis and his brother both have that lovely skin tone without the dirtyness to go with it.

I had that problem with my boys too and know others that had the same. I guess it's mostly a boy thing. They are in wonder over everything. So, therefore they get into everything.

Hi Ellie. Your discussion is delightful and really made me laugh. My 15th month old son has spina bifida and he has one strong leg as well as one weak leg. He doesn't crawl like most do he goes combat style almost dragging himself along the ground. His arms do the work pulling his body and his legs follow along. He picks up any dirt on to his clothes and he gets as dirty as a chimney sweeper must have got. I put clean clothes on him but he soon gets dirty looking again.

Mama.....he's just a little boy and they are naturally dirt magnets! LOL....when my son was little he would go out and play in a mud puddle, come in and have a bath put on clean clothes and go back out into the mud puddle....he only had so much tolerance for the dirty! My mother always said I was lucky because he always wanted to be clean....then when he turned into a teenager and took four showers somedays I wished he had just a bit higher tolerance for being just a little dirty.

hi Ellie333 I can still remember seeing my son when he was little playing with the little boy next door, and my son would come in with hardly any dirt on him yet the kid next door looked like he had taken a dirt bath. so I guess some kids just naturally get more dirty than others even doing the same things. My little girl was one for getting into things that spilled on her and having aball just getting all messed up.

kids are prone to getting dirty.their quotient of enjoyment is determined by the amount of dirt they acquire. so , they would jump into muddy places and splash mud over each other. they think that once they enter into some more dirty place like a old shed or a backyard, then it is an adventure...you know, CHILDREN ARE LIKE THAT ONLY...

Hi ellie, ahhh that sweet little boy! He's a dirt magnet! Aren't all little boys? I really can't say for sure since I don't have one of my own, but I think that's what they do, get dirty! That's so cute though. I guess not for you since you're the one who has to clean up after him and I guess it gets kind of tiring after awile. I would just hope that maybe when he's 18 you won't have to worry about him getting dirty anymore!

I totally see what you mean. We have children in day care that can run through muddy terrain without getting even a spar of dirt on their clothes whilst others will get extremely dirty without walking through it that much differently. I guess they do have some kind of dirt rader .
@ellie333 (21016)

Hi Cyberfluf, Trust me to get one that attracts it. I can even get him out of the bath at bedtime put his PJs on and he is clean but somehow by the morning he is grubby again, I just don't know what he does, perhaps he sleep walks and goes out into the garden to play. LOL. Ellie :D

I definitely agree with this one and Niamh is one of those children who alwasy seems to look scruffy and dirty even freshly scrubbed with new clothes on , turn away for 30 seconds and she looks like the hedge has dragged her backwards through its whole family tree! lol Even worse her best friend is one of those children who always looks immaculate and pristine! xxx

That is my ultimate dream too ellie but I cannot see it happening too soon! My little angel loves to climb walls, not too bad til you realise it is the living room walls! I had a nephew who was always dressed in white or very pale blue when he was an infant and toddler and I have never seen a child scream when he got a tiny , almost invisible speck of dirt on him! he is now an adult ans does Downhill mountain biking - you should see how filthy he gets. Maybe that is a good sign and our litte uns will grow up clean and tidy? xxxx

You could be right there mummymo, get it all out of their system now before they are adults and they may stay clean then, who knows. My son wants to be a pilot of a helicopter at mummys soldier land when he grows up and we all know how grubby soldiers can get on exercise eh but boy do they need to be spik and span for parade LOL so I may have a chance of him growing up clean. Huggles. Ellie:D

Yep, some kids keep clean and some don't, I don't know why. My daughter's always getting her clothes mucky with food, I think it's possibly because she always tries to cram so much into her mouth, that there's always some overflow. So lady-like! And she's usually the one at playgroup with food on her face. Her friends are always wearing clean clothes and have clean faces, I don't know how they manage it. (Ok, maybe the dirty face is down to me not noticing the splodges of breakfast, lol!) I know full well why her trousers are always dirty though, that's because of her obsession with jumping in muddy puddles (a la Peppa Pig!) I'm glad there are other grubby kids out there, and like someone else said, they probably have the most fun!

Ha ha, that's funny. It's nice to imagine a male version of her out there! She is quite boisterous and a real dare-devil, and my Mum's always saying that she should've been a boy. And that's a really good song for her because she can do a very angelic face when she wants to, (we know her too well to fall for it, but plenty of other people do!) I wouldn't want her any other way though, as it's part of what makes her who she is .

*LOL* I think you may be right, some are just more prone to such things. When I was growing up, one of my brothers was this way. No matter what he was doing,(He could be sitting at the table coloring) he ended up dirty. We called him pigpen. But, you know what? I bet he enjoyed himself.*L*

Oh Its much more fun playing in the mud and getting mucky I agree but some just seem to saty fairly clean whereas others attract the dirt, even yesterday on the beach before he took his trousers off they got covered in sand but my friends litle boy although playing in the sand too remained pristine. aw bless him! is it maybe a little bit t do with you noticing it more because he is your son as well?! I haven't got any children but i did a placement working with children in a nursery setting a couple of weeks ago and there were certainly some children who always looked well presented, clean and tidy, whereas others started off that way and seemed to get messy within seconds!! I think it's probably just the way children are, they don't have the self awareness to keep their clothes clean, at least they're having fun though, and a bit of dirt on some clothes never killed anyone!!! I think boys are probably worse than girls though, but not always, there's gt to be some pretty mucky little girls out there too!! hehe xvx

Hi Munchkin, Yes boys do seem to attract it more but I have known some angels with dirty faces too bless. At least he is having fun and like you say a little bit of dirt never done anyone any harm and having fun and being allowed to be a child is the most important thing eh! I wouldn't changed my grubby little son for the world, he is adorable just the way he is. Dirt can be washed off but happy memories of playing it it can't. Ellie :D
