Very often we buy medicines for minor ailments from the medical store. Do we know how safe is it for us to take these pills? I was once suffering from high fever and bought a tablet from a medical store as I was in the office. I left office a couple of hours later and went home and from there directly went to a Doctor. I told him about the tablet I had taken a few hours earlier and he gave me some more medicines. After a few hours I was very sick and had to be hospitalized! The Doctor did a routine Blood test there and saw that the WBC count was very low. In fact it kept on going down and finally around midnight my family was told that I just had a few hours to live. I have luckily survived. The reaction the doctor says was due to the tablet I had taken at the medical store. Its been 21 years now since that incident and till date have not taken even a pain killer without consulting a doctor. What about you? Do you just buy tablets from a medical store for minor ailments or do you go to a Doctor?

Hi dear its not recomended that u should buy any medicine without perscription. But there are some Shelf medicines which are sold and bought at counter and use for day to day minor problems U r right 21 yrs back there were some medicines which were not suitable to every one and cause severe reaction just as u mention , u r really luckt that u survive that. like Novelegene and other medicines like that Now the shelp medicines are tested and then allowed to sold without perscription, so i still do that Take care

The medicine that I had was a very normal shelf medicine that was not at all considered dangerous. But inspite of going to the best hospital in our city at that time they were not able to diagonize the cause of the reaction. So till today I do not know what I am allergic to and have to take a lot of care when taking even a simple Novalgin. At that time my family was told that i had just about 6-8 hours to live! The next time it happens I may not be so lucky!

I think this is really depends on the situation. Taking yours as an example, you are having a high fever so it means this one is severe and your immune system is not fighting anymore. There are some things to be considered like if you are taking any medications or vitamins or food supplement that can react abnormally with the one you have taken during this fever. Maybe you have an allergy to its one of the components that's why your WBC counts go down and another thing is checking the expiration date of the medicine or who knows if it is expose to extreme heat or cold. After all, over the counter medicines were available because you can take them without prescription at the second tie but be sure that the sickness is not severe, severe is not a major sickness. And fever indicates a lot of sickness, maybe you the WBC count down trigger your fever. What we see is not always the real reason, just be careful the next time. And ask your doctor if you have allergies to some of medicines components. I think it is just a misconception on medicines, or it helps if you search on the internet if there is no professional advise to seek from. Anyways, myLot gives a lot of help! Thank you!

I have never liked medicine and I will not take it unless I have to,and I think that self medicating can be very dangerous and that you should consult a doctor when it comes to medicines,I only take Tylenol for my headaches, and Alavert from my allergies or than that I avoid medicine, even though I am on blood pressure medicine that was proscribed to me by my doctor.

Yes I am safe now and make sure nobody at home has medicines without any prescriptions. Because now everytime I fall sick and take any new medications I have to see if there is any reaction in the next 12 hours!

I think we should be wise enough not to take our health for granted. When we're sick call a doctor, it might cost you but at least it will not cost you your life. In general, over the counter pills are not lethal and may be taken if you have knowledge of your sickness and if you are sure that you are not allergic to the medicine you are about to take.

I think all of us at some time or the other have taken counter pills that we thought are not lethal. I also had taken a common pill that everyone took. It was the first time that I needed to take a pill like that in an emergency so I did not know that I was allergic to it. Learnt it in a very dangerous way that almost killed me.

I think that however minor the problem that when we self diagnose ourselves we should still ask a pharmacist opinion and ask about certain pills mixing that we may be taking at the time so we don't harm ourselves. Some medication even if over the counter doesn't mix. I will buy Advil or Ibuprofen and maybe vitamins but I always ask a pharmacist before buying other pills. I don't get to the doctor much, wish I could.

It is really very alarming to know that you landed in deep trouble, because of a small mistake of buying a medicine, without consulting your Doctor. You are absoultely right about buying medicine, without advice of a Doctor. It is always safe to buy medicine with a precription from a qualified Doctor. I also normaly do not buy any important medicines straight away from the Chemist, without the prescription of a Doctor. One or two of my relatives are Doctors, so if I or kids have a small illness, I take oral advice, before buying a medicine through a counter. Very Good Post!

It sounds really very strange that Action 500 could be so dangerous on one's health. Please be careful and take all kinds of precautions.

hi there are medicines available OTC which shud be safe inless they are adulterated, for example an OTC painkiller say crocin which is paracetamol 500 mg is quite safe to take unless you are suffering from Liver or kidney disease.but other painkillers like for example Diclofenac has been known to lower your blood pressure.even you can get the same at any pharmacy without prescription.but wht is most important is that these medicines are genuine or not.If they are not genuine, they can cause reactions or they may not give the desired results which can be potentially fatal if you are suffering from life threatening disease. In your case,i dont think any painkiller wud cause your WBC count to go down.WBC count can go down if you are suffering from some serious infection or have some auto immune disease.Abuse of painkiller can surely harm ur liver and kidneys.

Twenty years ago nobody knew that we could get fake medicines in a medical store. The tablet I took was an ordinary OTC one which everyone took. I was not in the habit of popping pills so I did not know I was allergic to anything. The Doctors were never able to diagnoze what exactly went wrong but I have heard a lot of cases of reactions due to these safe OTC tablets. I dont think people should be taking them too often. I suffer from low BP so never take Diclofenac.

Thats not a good idea at all. I've done it and then discovered, when I ask a licensed doctor, that I'm always totally wrong in my assumptions. Some medecines are used badly, others let you develop immunities and others are steriods which make the condition worse. Please check with your doctor first. I've been through this mayself.

I think that medicines taken without prescription can be more harmful than ever thought of. When it comes to small health problems ..... like cold etc one can go and take medicines without even prescription but for more serious ailments we must have prescription from Dr. to avoid any serious problems. Thanks For raising such a good discussion.....! Happy Mylotting ! Take Care ! Ganesh !

I have taken medicines those that are generic and recommended for first stage medication like paracetamol. After that I consult the doctor if symptoms persist. I don't just take medicines which I'm not quite sure could get me out of the sickness I have. I have once tried taking medicine for headache which my classmate gave me when I was in 5th grade. My headache got even worst and I roll over the floor cause I almost can bare the pain. Luckily the school pediatrician is around to prescribe the right medicine. After that I don't take medicine not prescribe by doctors aside from those generic ones.

I too had just taken a paracetamol and then there was some reaction in the blood. I was just lucky to have survived! The doctors just said it was a miracle. After that I do not keep even first stage medications at home. Any emergency the doctor is called home even after midnight!

Maybe your body reacted too much on the medicine you've taken or shall I say its not the appropriate one to take. Thank God you've survived. Always take cautious measure before you do same thing again.

Self medication is not easy , specially if you dont know the prescribtion of the medicine, also if your not known to that medicine how many tablest your take with in how many hours, so the doctor will still the good person to tell you what is good for your health.

Well self medication is highly discouraged by doctors as you know it but if simple fevers I think you could do that to yourself. But buying antibiotics is not recommended that you self medicate yourself. You were indeed a very lucky person to have survived that ordeal maybe that is a lesson learned the hard way.

Yes I learned the lesson the very hard way. And I had taken a pill that is taken by many for a slight fever. Now I cannot think of taking a pill even if I have a headache.

Hi mayka, Your case would seem to be very rare, as most over the counter medicines are relatively safe unless taken in large amounts. I can understand why you would feel as you do, and I'm sure that my reaction would be the same. Blessings.

I'm not a big pill taker anyway. I grew up when medicine was cherry flavored and I hate cherry flavored anything. Its more of a choice to feel better for a little while versus feeling better all the time. I'm not sure what you took but that would scare me to ever try it again too.

The pill that I had taken was just an ordinary pain killer taken for pain and fever. Doctors themselves could not figure out why it reacted. But this is just a warning for those who keep popping pills for anything and everything. This is a dangerous habit.

Hi mayka, I'm glad that you were alright. It is never good to take any medication without consulting a doctor. You just don't know what kind of reaction you can have. Everyone has a different reaction. You can have a reaction that maybe someone else won't have. I have had some bad reactions to medication before so I am very careful to only take what the doctor tells me to. Sometimes you can have a reaction to what the doctor gives you, but at least they know what to do.

Yes I am glad that I am alright and nothing has happened to me....its true that everyone does not get a reaction to medicines but I think all of us should be careful. Especially the children because we can never know what they are allergic to.

Medicines always have some side affects, I try to stay away and use natural cures if I can, they may take longer but the side affects are not as bad.

I agree that natural cures are the best. But in todays world nobody wants to wait long for a natural cure.
