Do you ever get down in the back? You know, get back pain or a back ache?

I have apparently sprained or pulled a muscle in my lower back on my right side. The last 2 days when I've awakened, my back was hurting. I've been trying to figure out what I did to make it hurt. I'm thinking that it's because I've been on the treadmill 50 minutes a day lately. I'm not "navigating" too well, in terms of standing up, walking, and sitting down. I've gotta laugh at how comical I must look when I'm trying to move around. I've taken some Advil today, but that's about it. Do you ever get a back ache? What do you do to make it feel better? Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi there! Yeah I do experience back pains sometimes. Especially when I overdo things like cross stitchng with my back arched too much or sitting long hours just typing in my keyboard. I usually feel it at night when I'm about to sleep. When I feel back pain I do some stretching concentrating on my back. I try to twist my waist from left to right until I no longer feel the pain cause it helps to alleviate it. Sometimes I also try to stand straight with my back leaning against the walls. By doing that it also stretches the back with support from the wall. Some say try to sleep on hardwood or don't put pillows under the head so you lie down straight on your back. Try it fellow lotter. These stretching techniques does helps. Ciao!

Hello iskayz. Sorry to hear you sometimes have back pain. I have been doing very gentle stretches in the a.m. but I'm sort of afraid it will get worse if I do anything. And I sure don't want it to. I'm gonna try the wall thing. Yes, the sleeping with no pillow, I figured out last night. But, I did put a very large, foam pillow under my stomach and slept flat, on my stomach. That really helped also.

Well I like to stretch my back a lot and I'm used to doing it. I think I'm gonna try your tip. Sleeping flat on my stomach. I'll see if it will work for me. Happy lotting!

sorry to mention this, but have you checked with a doctor. i had same kind of back pain along with which my left leg used used to pain. it was too horrible. but when i checkd it with a doctor, he told me that i was suffering from slip disc. when i did a M.R.I it came in the report that there were multiple slipdisc. i am not tryin to scare you, but i would just like to bring to your notice the possibilities. so i would suggest you consult a doctor whenever possible. this problem if avioded of medication, can become chronic and then it will be hard to heal. my dad faces the same problem but he didnt treat the problem and his problems become chronic now giving him excruciating pain in his back.

Hello anurag440044. Oh, I sure don't like to hear I might have a slipped disc. That doesn't sound good. I've had this problem before but it usually goes away in a couple of weeks. It feels like a sprained muscle, but what do I know. Thank you for telling me about your back pain experience. It does make me think that maybe I need to see a doctor about it.

I have a bad back and it goes out totally on occassions and on other occassions just hurts enough that I cant sit, stand or walk. I agree we probably look pretty funny walking or trying to walk at times. One thing you can try is something like Icy Hot, heating pad or some say cold helps them. Try different things til you find something that helps you. I use the Icy Hot all the time for mine when it starts up. Also sometimes for what ever reason there doesnt seem to be a reason for it to go out, it just does. I hope that you feel better soon thou and I know how it feels.

Hi Ithink. Sorry to hear you have a bad back. Oooh, I sure wouldn't like that. I did put some BioFreeze on it last night, that's sort of like IcyHot, i think. It did give me some initial relief as I was going to sleep. I'm gonna try cold on it today. In fact, I'm right by the frig, I'm gonna get that gel pack out of the freezer right now. I sure would like to know how I aggravated it so I could make sure I never, ever do that again! Take care.

Well last year I put my back out, and I couldn't walk standing up straight either, it even hurt to sit for too long, I probably looked pretty comical too. I had to go to a chiropractor, it was too bad, but he had me lie on a heating pad, 20 mins. a day twice a day, with my knees up, it helped, it loosened the muscles in my back and I always felt a little better afterward. Most doctors will tell you to use an ice pack or something, but he had me use heat. I also just took pain medicine for it, it helps to take anything with Ibuprofen in it, because its an inflammatory, or some kind of motrin, Advil should work, you should try Aleve too. Hope you get to feeling better..

Hey walijo2008. Gosh, I sure feel like I'm not alone on the back thing. A lot of people on Mylot have or have had back problems. I've never been to a chiropractor, can you believe that? I have used heat and I have used those ice gel packs yesterday and today. Both of them tend to relieve the pain just a little. I am taking Ibuprofen or Advil every 4 hours as prescribed and it does take the edge off of the pain. Appreciate your wishes for me to get better. Take care.

Hey Pearl. I always have back problems. I have less pain since I finally got a new bed 4 months ago. That helped a bit. I listened to the saleswoman about not getting the firmer mattress and getting one a bit more substantial but that would conform more to my back. She was right! I still have pain if I stand for too long washing dishes or doing vacumning or making the bed. It just depends. I tend to have more knee problems so I really don't know if that adds tension to the back or not. The orthopedist seems to think that it's all arthritis related. So much for that! Some mornings when I get out of bed I'm ashamed to say that I look like a decrepit old beotch, but the slowly I work out the kinks and then I'm zippen around like usual and I move pretty quick at that!

Hi Opal26. I sure hate to hear that you have back problems. I'm surprised to hear that the firmest mattress isn't the best for back pain. I think we need a new mattress, but my husband isn't so sure. I slept on one of those Tempurpedic (sp) mattresses in a hotel once, and it was heavenly. It seemed to be very solid foam that conformed to every curve of the body. Fantastic! I think they are pretty expensive though. Anyhoo, I have some arthritis in one hip and at least one of my knees, so I know what you are saying about getting up in the morning. Once I get through those initial 8 or 10 steps, I'm fine. Hope your back gets better than ever with that new mattress. Do take care.

I have lived with a bad back all my life. I would feel sorry for a snake if it had back problems. It completely disabled me at 36 years old. There was no medication for my condition other than aspirin and my stomach wouldn't take much of that. My back is now totally fused with calcium where it won't bend or turn. As for your pulled muscles in your lower back pay very close attention to how you get up out of a chair. Never get up turning either direction with most of your weight on just one foot. If you can help it at all just don't turn until you are standing and your weight on both feet. Turn as many of your chairs as you can toward the direction you will go when you leave the chair. The only thing that will help a pulled muscle in your lower back is rest. Lay down flat in bed on your back if you can. One pillow only. Don't prop up in bed with 2 or 3 pillows. If it is very bad pain medication won't do you much good. I'm not a Doctor but I have been there and back many times with the back pain.

Hello Arkie69. So sorry to hear about your chronic back pain and subsequent disability. I have been taking Ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and it does seem to help a little. Thanks for telling me about standing up straight with both feet down and not turning or twisting. I've figured that one out just because of the pain that ensues if I do it wrong. I do notice that laying down flat does seem to be the most comfortable position. But how long can a person just lay flat like that? Thank you for all of this info. Take care.

I fell on my back in my shower/tub when I was 16. It hurt like Hell. I fell right smack on the faucet head of the shower/tub. I asked my friends to look at my back that day, and they asked if my mother's boyfriend had been beating me. I told them what happen to me in my shower/tub, and they said that I really needed to be more careful. Doing anything with my back can be a real pain if I am not careful.

I put my back out once making the bed. When I threw the comforter over I must have stretched and twisted at the same time....I was literally bend over for a couple of days...then when I helped my neice move she lived on the third floor of an apartment building without an elevator....about 50 trips up and down the steps I irritated a nerve in my lower back that bothers me at different times....If I stretch in the morning or when I feel myself getting tensed up....then it relieves some of the pain.

Hey Jill. Isn't it strange how just one wrong move can practically put us out of commission for a week or 2? I sure hate to hear you were bent over for a couple of days, that would be the pits. You make an excellent point--I really should be stretching more in the morning. I've heard recently that stretching cures alot of ills. Thanks for your comments.

Some people find heat comforting;others find cold. Figure out which is better for you right now. Usually heat right after and injury and cold later on, but that depends on a lot of things. There are 8 hour meds that you can put on your back that are like a giganic bandaid that are over the counter like icy hot. There are also creams like tiger balm, bengay, stuff with capsaison, etc. If longer than 2 weeks before you get better, promise me you'll go to a doctor. Walking usually doesn't do it. Turning the wrong way, lifting, etc. generally causes a sprain, but if your legs are out of alignment or you are really pounding the treadmill with your feet (not walking lightly), that could "jar" your back. Take care

Well, maybe 50 minutes was too much to start with on the treadmill. I always tell people that 10 is the magic # to start. 10 minutes the first time out unless a person is in really bad shape. 10 crunches, 10 push ups unless a person had an operation through muscles like I did, I had to start with 1. Also, they always tell you to see your Dr. before you start any new physical program, that's why, so they can tell you if you are out of alignment or what your current level of fitness is or even if your heart/blood pressure can handle what you're trying to do. I hope you feel better soon. Take care

Hello writersedge. I don't know what I did to injure my back but I decided to lay off the treadmill today. The pain got a lot worse yesterday after I had been on it for 45 minutes. I used gel packs from the freezer today and that provided some relief. I am taking Ibuprofen every 4 hours today and I do think the pain has backed off a little. I use Biofreeze before bed, that's like Bengay or Icy Hot. Don't worry, I won't last 2 weeks with this kind of pain. I'm already bored out of my mind after 2 days of doing almost nothing. I have to go to work tomorrow which means I've gotta sit in the car for 40 minutes each way and sit in a chair for at least 5 hours. I'm a mental health therapist. If I need to, I can stand alternately with sitting. I don't think my legs are out of alignment. But, how would I know if they were? I actually have less pain when I stand up than when I'm sitting. I am able to sit for short periods in the chair today, which is better than yesterday. Thanks for all the info.

Yes I do get back ache quite often and other pain as well. Be careful because if you have pulled a muscle in your back it can take quite a while to heal. You do not want to make it any worse either. I hurt my back once doing exercises and it took 6 months to heal. I used to take pain killers and put a hot pack on the sore spot. Deep heat is also good. It smells a lot so you might not want it on during the day but it is good to rub in before sleep. Have you been to the doctor about it? Backs are really important and lower back pain can be serious. You could have a disc out. It is always important to check to make sure it is just a muscle. As for how it happened. It could have happened in your sleep. You could have done it exercising or lifting something. I get pain if I stand too long or sit badly. I woke up with tendinitis in my left shoulder one morning and a year later I still have a frozen muscle.

Hi sharra1. Sorry to hear you get a lot of back aches. I am going to be more careful for the next few days to see if I can get it to feeling better. I have had this type of backache before and it usually gets better within a couple of weeks. I'm going to use a rub on it tonight called "Bio Freeze". It's really good stuff. I don't think I have a disc out only because I've had this type of pain before and it healed up. I plan to see how it is tomorrow. Although I try not to lift heavy things, I'm pretty active. Friday, I cleaned the house and Saturday, I cleaned the swimming pool, plus I did my 50 minutes on the treadmill both of those days. I didn't realize I could have hurt my back in my sleep! Weird. Gosh, sorry to hear about your tendonitis and shoulder/muscle freeze. Hope that gets better. Thanks for all the advice. Do take care.

Yes, recently I've had a lot of trouble with my back, Pearl. I'm not sure whether it's just old age or whether my bed's too soft (shouldn't be), or possibly it's from sitting in my computer chair with bad posture for too long. It's just a nagging lower back ache - not sharp pains or anything - and I usually fill my hot water bottle and put it in the small of my back for a while. Sometimes I do take a painkiller for it, and I hope it's nothing too serious.

Hello guybrush. Sounds like there are alot of myLotters who have had or are experiencing back pain. Hope you are not currently having any back pain. Your suggestion to use heat is a good one. Someone else said to alternate between ice packs and heat to see which one relieves the pain best. I used some of those frozen gel packs today and that provided a little bit of relief. Before bed, I've been putting on some BioFreeze, which is a rub that's sort of like Bengay and Icy Hot. Today, I think the pain has slightly backed off. I've been good about taking the Ibuprofen every 4 hours to try to fend off the pain. And I think that's beginning to work. Thanks for the hot water bottle idea. Take care.

Well I actually sprained a muscle in my back when I was in high school. I was in cheerleading and someone fell on me and i overextended my back. That did not feel too good. It would be a good thing to go to the doctor and get it checked out. You could also try hot and cold compresses interchanging after 15 minutes. The doctors also had me do exercises at home to strenghthen my back muscles. Hope that I could help.

Hello desireetoro. Ooooh, your cheerleading accident sounds painful! I appreciate your concern and I am considering calling the doctor. However, I've had this pain before and it gradually heals over a 2 or 3 week period. I think it's a sprain or "pull" of a muscle. Thanks for the idea of the compresses. I am going to try some heat tomorrow, I think. If I don't notice some improvement or at least diminishing of the pain over the next couple of days, I'll probably call the doctor. Thank you so much for all your suggestions. Take care.

I do get back pains whenever I sit in front of the computer for a long time. I think it's cause I'm not sitting properly. But then I realize it's because my computer chair is broken and and it causes my back to ache cause of bad posture. So I replaced my chair and it's all good now.

Hello rekcart83. Glad you replaced your chair and that your back pain doesn't bother you anymore. I try not to sit too long if I can avoid it. Right now, I can sit for short periods of time. My back pain is less when I stand or lie down flat. I'm hoping it will be better by tomorrow.

I have a bad back and I hurt most of the time and I take a RX for my back when it is bad and I do walk bent over or with a limp when my back hurts so did the Advil help? Try heat and then Ice it, Ice it with a bag of frozen peas if you have any

Hi jennyw022605. Sorry to hear your back hurts alot. I sure wouldn't like not being able to stand up straight because of pain. The Advil did help but I ran out and switched to generic Ibuprofen (same thing as the Advil) and I've taken it every 4 hours today. I do think the pain has backed off a little. I put Biofreeze on it last night before bed, that's like IcyHot or BenGay. I used frozen gel packs today and they did seem to relieve it somewhat. I'm getting ready to put those on again in a few minutes. Thanks for your suggestions.

Maybe it was because of your sleeping posture. It happened to me one time. I just got a massage from my partner and rub some Bengay or Icy Hot. They soothed and loosen the muscles.

Hello allurejan. Another myLotter suggested my back pain could be due to my sleeping posture. I did get a massage with BioFreeze last night at bedtime and it did help a little. BioFreeze is sort of like IcyHot or Bengay. Thank you for the tip on using those 2 products. Take care.

I would have back ache if I were to sleep for more than 6 hours. I have no idea what is wrong with my back. I have even gone to the doctors and they told me to change my mattress. I bought a new mattress and so far on the new mattress, I can enjoy my sleep up to 8 hours with no pain at all. During those period when I suffered the back ache, I did not take any medication even though the doctors supplied me with some pain killers. I just did not want to take it since the pain was still bearable. for all you know, it could be a sign of old age catching up... in my case.... LOL!

Hello Beruang. It sounds like the new mattress solved your back problems. Good for you. I am using over the counter pain medicines, Advil and Ibuprofen and they seem to be helping a little bit. Well, I'm certainly not getting any younger!
