Kerosene delivery - Aaaaaaaaaaaaah, I'm so ANGRY!!

October 31, 2008 10:59am CST
The heating in our house runs on Kerosene which means that we have a huge tank outside the house which we get filled when it gets low. We moved into our house in July and so have only just had to start using the heating so the oil has only been used to heat the water which means that we have had minimal use over the last few months. In the last week or 2 (as many of you will be aware) the temperatures have dropped drastically and it has been really cold, which means that we have had the heating on. To add injury to insult, the kids have been off on school holidays so the door has often been left open, etc... letting the heat escape. You know how it is - try as I will, they will still leave the door open. Anyway, I knew the oil was starting to get low, so I have been trying to conserve the hat in the house. I called first thing on Monday to order 500litres of kerosene and was assured that it would be delivered by the end of the week. In the past we have had no problems with delivery and it has often arrived before it was scheduled, so I didn't worry that it wouldn't arrive before we ran out. By this morning (Friday morning) it still hadn't arrived and I started to worry, so I went outside to check the level of the tank and it was very very low - barely showing on the guage! I called the delivery company to double check that our delivery was definitely due today. The lady I spoke to assured me it would be delivered this afternoon. 3.30pm, I started to worry again when they hadn't yet arrived, so I called them again to be told that our delivery hadn't gone out today and we would get it first thing in the morning. NOT GOOD ENOUGH! I have 3 small kids with no heating and no hot water over night ... and I ordered a week ago. I argued with the lady (in a nice way) and she has somehow arranged that someone else who has oil, will wait till tomorrow morning for their delivery, and we are apparently going to get our order this afternoon ... although, I am still waiting to see it arrive. Then she advises me that most of their clients order 1000 litres at a time and so as we will probably need another delivery before Christmas, I should be sure to order a week in advance so that this situation doesn't happen again! I DID ORDER A WEEK IN ADVANCE! I got the feeling she was telling me that I should be ordering 1000 litres, not just 500. Well, since they want payment for half the delivery in advance and then you can pay for the balance over the next month or 2 ... I didn't want to spend that much money right now so I only ordered 500litres which I could afford. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Has this ever happened to you? Were you left without oil, or something else essential to any sort of comfort? What happened? Why did you end up in your situation? Did you manage to sort it out easily? Thanks Violetdreams

No..it's hasn't happened to me as mine is piped in....but I had a leak in my basement one night...big leak....and trying to get a plumber over was impossible....so my ex husband came over and tried to turn the water off and broke off the valve! So we had to get an emergency number for the city so someone could turn it off in my yard....it took hours while the water poured into my basement! And I had to pay for it....it was the next day before I could get a plumber over here...what a mess!

OMG!!!! That sounds horrendous. The stuff that nightmares are made of or what? How did you get all the water out of your basement? Did you insurance cover it? Violetdreams

things like this is exactly why we converted to gas. we got sick of the companies' BS. next time do what i did-call the police and tell them you have no heat and they won't deliver when you have children present.believe it or not,it works.they tried that "you have no contract/we can't come out" crap with me,with a disabled, sick elderly in the house and the cops made them come.

Thanks for the advice, I will bear it in mind. I wonder what the UK police will do? I am still hoping for a delivery, otherwise we can have a fire later when it gets really cold, but that only really heats the lounge and I don't think we could all sleep in the lounge. Thankfully the kids all have thick duvets and extra blankets if necessary - this is really more inconvenient than anything else at the moment. Thankfully, while it is cold, it could be worse! At least we don't have any snow, etc... We will survive, but it just really makes me mad cause I did order early and this still happens... Oh well, Ce' la Vie (Such is Life), and thanks for the response. Violetdreams

If you're going to be angry , why not try being angry at yourself. You knew the supply was running low, but you kept putting off making the order. When you finally do, it's when it gets rreally cold, which means everybody else is ordering theirs too. The fuel companies have to put up with people like you every year. You cause your own problem and then blame somebody else when you don't get what you want, right on time. At this time of year, a week in advance isn't nearly enough. Wake up and stop blaming other people for your own mistake.

We've had that problem at work (kennel) several times. It seems that when it happens we'll have puppies there that cannot get cold, so my boss has to take them to her house. So now my boss orders it before we really need it- when the guage says we have 25 percent left, she orders. By the time they bring it, we're not totally out yet lol

Painful isn't it? The problem is that if it hadn't been school holidays this week, the kids would have been at school all day and I wouldn't have had the heating on so much and we would have had enough to wait until tomorrow morning. Guess I will have to order a lot earlier next time. Thanks for your response. Violetdreams

I have never had that problem. We have electric heat now and in the past we have always had gas heat. My grandfather has a Propane tank that he has to get filled up every winter. I don't think he has ever had a problem getting his delivery.

I have never heard of that before, our heating just runs off gas and so I just have to make sure that I put plenty of money in the meter. You are right about it going cold it has been horrible. I have the same problems with my kids leaving doors wide open, my house is pretty old and pretty big so the heat just disappears as soon as a door is left open. I hope that your delivery comes soon!

Thanks Gemini We live just outside the city of Worcester (UK) and don't have gas at all. Just electricity and oil (kerosene) which runs our boiler (water and heating). The property is quite old too and since it is rented I am not sure what sort of insulation we have either. I am still waiting and it is not 16.11 - wonder if it will arrive!!!??? Violetdrams
