Has anyone been told they had no right to take part in a discussion?

November 6, 2008 2:16pm CST
I was taking part in a discussion about Obama being made president and I got told that because I am not American I do not know about American politics so I should butt out. I do know something about American politics as I did some at university but that is besides the point. I do not think that anyone has the right to tell someone here that they should not take part in a discussion. What do you think?

I am sorry I didn't know that some discussions were suppose to only be for some people and not others either. That is pretty bold of whoever it was to tell you to butt out. Some people are just rude!

Yeah, I didn't know that, either. That is just completely rude. I am so sorry that that happened to you!

Surely, everyone has the right to take part in a discussion, it doesnot matter which country you live in, nowdays you have internet, television and other sources which gives you all information about every country and it is very rude to say you do not have a right to participate.

That is what I thought when I took part in the discussion but I must admit that the whole thing got quite nasty with a few people just ranting. Still I also had a civil one from another participant which made up for things and I soon got over the stupidity.

I'm sorry to say, but this election has certainly brought out the true colors of some of the people here on Mylot. Whoever told you that you should butt out, is wrong, you have every right to participate in whatever discussion you choose. Whether you are from the US or not, you still have an opinion and your opinion should be respected. I know there are people on Mylot talking about how their ratings went down over the last few days, and I bet it is because someone did not agree with their views on the election.

Mylot has a LOT of members from other countries, this is NOT primarily an American site lol. I really find it demeaning and rude and even embarrassing to myself as an American that somebody would say something like that in the first place. It's also true that many times people from other countries do know more (from studying and research) about our politics than our home grown citizens! There are many things I disagree with in politics but it's simply another opinion. It doesn't make somebody else's bad - well unless it conflicts with equality but that's the big one that gets under my skin. It's still beyond childish games to rate someone down for disagreeing.

You are right every one has the right to disagree. the election has certainly bought out the true colours in some people. I have never rated anyone down for disagreeing with me but I quite expect my rating to go down after hat discussion. Please do not be ashamed of your fellow Americans, they are a very small minority. Thankyou both for your responses.

That is so rude. He or she is acting like he/she owns the site. I think you can report this to MyLot admin. I don't think that you should just let it pass. We are here to voice out our thoughts with freedom. As long as we're not hurting people and you're not saying anything derogatory, that should be fine. No one has the right to tell anyone they can't participate in a discussion just because you're not American. gosh! Some people are just so rude.

I do not think I will report them. They are not worth it. I did tell them what I thought of them so I expect my rating will go down because of it. I did not even rate them down because I have never done that to anyone no matter how much I disagree with them. I just rate up. Thankyou for your response.

I could suggest a number of responses you could have made, but I fear most of them would have got you banned, if indeed the inbuilt censor let you post them at all. They'd have come out as a collection of substitute letters lol. You could, of course, simply called him Richard Head and told him to go and do some anatomically impossible things with himself. Lash

I just told hime that he obviously had no answer and had to resort to insults. I think it is sad when people have to do that. I must admit that I felt like saying more but then I would just be putting myself on their level. Thankyou for your response.

I'm not Amercian either but what many americans did not fully realise is how the politics in the USA affect the whole world. I think that I may have said this before but we have a saying where I live that 'If America sneezes then we get pneumonia'. I believe that all mylotters have the right to express their opinion as long as it is in a polite and not derogatory way. We can change the world, one persona ta time, right here by rspecting each other's opinion.

What happens in America does affect the world. It is a very strong country. I agree we should respect all views but when you get people ranting at you it is difficult. Most people on mylot are genuine peole who care about other peoples views but this election seems to have bough out the worst in some people. Thankyou for your response.

O dear. That was not nice. Where you being rude or saying something bad about him. Well, I answered and congratulated on those discussions about Obama becoming President as this is what Americans voted for, and no one replyied to me yet. Well never mind. I am from UK you can join in with my British politics any time. Gordon Brown is a clown. He makes us cringe when he talks. The sooner he is kicked out the better. Do you agree on this one? Yeah people stop being rude. These are open discussions.
9 Nov 08
I was putting a strong point over that was the opposite to theirs. I am also from the UK and I agree with you about Gorden Brown. The sooner we find someone with a bit of charisma the better. I was not upset by the rudeness. I was just annoyed at the time. I did not think it was nice on a site like mylot.

Personally, people need to remember that there are people from all over the United States in here that are active members here, so when you choose to start a New discussion you should never limit it to only a certain type of people as well. I think that this should be open to everyone, and it should be up to the person reading the discussion to decide if they want to respond back to something in here or not. At least that is the way I see it here.

wow, I'm so glad that member made American's look so kind (That is sarcasm). Just because you don't live here in America doesn't mean you don't know anything about our political system. I know that I studied about all political systems in High School, and not just ours. Sure, It was only the basics, but you have the internet and you know how to Speak English, and your here so I am sure you can read it just as well (I haven't looked at your profile to see where your from).... Some people just make us all look bad.

I learnt some American politics at university and have also picked up a lot from the internet and reading. Like you say we can learn a lot. I am from the UK and I am quite happy for people to discuss our government wherever they come from. Thankyou for your response.

They do not make you look bad. They just make themselves look pathetic.

No one has the right to tell you that way, This site incourage us to participate the discussion, infact mylot paid us for it. This is the first time i heard something like this for i thought that their is no racial discrinimation here. That everyone is welcome to express their opinion as long it does not hurt anyone feeling. For what you said, i well know be very careful.

You do not have to be careful. I only disagreed with them. Someone like that will not stop me enjoying the discussions and disagreeing with people as well as agreeing. Thankyou for your response.

Don't worry about it. Besides I know some people who aren't American and they know more about American politics than the majority of Americans. You have the right to participate in any discussion you like isn't that what a discussion is?
7 Nov 08
That is what I thought too. Thankyou for your response. I know most of the people on mylot are really nice. There are just a few idiots about and this election seems to have bought out the worst.

Thats very bad of the person... you dont have to be an American before you take part in such a conversation.. Obama becoming president has affected the world as a whole and we the Asians and Africans and some middle-east countries are celebrating the victory of Obama.. that was very rude of the person and you should simply ignore that person and dont get pissed since we have different kinda people...

If anyone is on a PUBLIC forum, they have a right to speak and be spoken to, by anyone on the forum. As long as your responses are not foul or threatening, you have a right to speak to any discussion on this forum. If the person getting your response doesn't wish to have all responses to their questions, they shouldn't be on a PUBLIC forum. If they don't want to hear other opinions, either from the US or elsewhere, perhaps they should watch television instead of discussing politics on a PUBLIC FORUM!!!!!!!! You talk away wanderer, we don't care where you're from! Where are you from BTW?

I think you have just as much right as anyone else. Some people you just have to ignore. We are all here to voice our thoughts and opinions. You continue voicing yours. Although that person has the right to voice their opinion; you have the right to voice yours.

That is really rude. Were you saying something that that person did not agree with? because that might have had something to do with it. I do not know much about American politics but I can give my opinion that I like Obama and think he will make a good president based on what I have seen of im on TV and read on his website etc. Someone who knows more about it can disagree with me and that is fair enough but that does not take away my right to give my opinion. If this person has simply assumed that you do not know much about American politics based on the fact that you are not American then this is simply ignorance.

Hi friend, I dont know why people are sometimes rude.It doesn't mean that we have no right to partcipate in a discussion if we dont live in America, but we should be familiar with the facts to partcipate, then anyone else can participate. No one here has the right to say not to participate in any discussion unless we are banned by the administration.thanks for sharing.happy mylotting.

It sounds like there has been misinformation somewhere along the line! As far as I am concerned you are allowed to take part in any discussions that you want to take part in! Everyone is entitled to their opinion! I agree that you may or may not have any knowledge in relation to politics but that's besides the point! That person whoever were, they were very rude! Don't worry about them, they are not worth the air you breath! Andrew

That is the craziest thing that I've ever heard. I appreciate all the comments I get from my posts. I can't imagine turning someone away based on nationality or anything else. I think its very interesting to get other people's perspectives on the issues. After all, how can we become get a better understanding of the issues, if we refuse discuss them with people who can offer a different view point.
