Do your dogs eat vegetables and fruits?

I don'y know if dogs eat vegetables and fruits. I have a yellow Labrador, where the vet said their skin is very sensitive, so I can't simply give her any food. Sometimes I feel pity for her, because she always likes to share our food, and she only has her dog food to eat. I tried to give her fruits or vegetables, but she didn't seem to like them. She just played a while with the fruits or vegetables I gave her, then just left them there.

yes a couple of my dogs love apples. and I have known a Lab that would eat an apple a day. They sometimes also like carrots. And most dogs will eat a salad if it has dressing on or bits of meat and cheese in it. My aunt's dog would eat raw potato skins (as she peeled them for cooking) He loved raw potato.. strange... I had dos that have eaten strawberry and watermelon.

Hi minx267, thanks for your response. Perhaps it really depends on individual too? Or I should try giving my dog an apple a day? ^_^

Yea, I guess just like people some are picky and some aren't. I would try slicing up an apple and see if he likes it. It couldn't hurt.. lol

I am raising Carin Terriers and when I took them to puppy kindergarten they suggested giving carrots and other vegtable's for treats. My dogs will eat just about anything, but I try to limit them to dog food and puppy treats. I don't want them begging to eat from the table.

Hi woodmar1, thanks for your response. Sometimes, my dog barks at us when we are eating. We always try to stop this habit from her too. Maybe I shall give carrots to my dog, just for a try. ^_^

My Beagle Buster - This is my buddy BUSTER!
My Buster (photo attatched) loves veggies actually. He especially loves grape or cheery tomatoes. I have to watch him in my garden as he grabs them right from the vine sometimes. He also loves our apples and red rasberries. I think it's strange but he's been eating them for years with no ill effects. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Hi webeishere, thanks for your response. Your Buster is cute. ^_^ It's so nice that he has such a big field to run around. I always hope I'll have a bigger yard, so that my dog has bigger space to run around.

I have two dogs. My 4yr old retreiver/chow mix doesn't really like veggies and fruit....although he does like cauliflower and that's absolutely hilarious to watch him chow down on! LOL! My jack russell/lab mix is 16 weeks old and loves to eat my apple cores! Maybe it's because they're cold and she's teething right now, but we'll see if she still likes them later. She seems to like a variety of different things. All dogs have different tastes, just like people.

Hi sweetmafia, thanks for your response. I've never try to feed fish to my dog before. But I don't dare to give it to her too, as the vet advised she should only take lamb but not chicken and pork, due to the sensitive skin.

Yes dogs do eat fruits and vegitables. I have three dogs and they like vegitables. They eat cucumber, pumpkin and even some leafy vegitables. They also like potatoes and sweet potatoes. The most favourite my dogs likes is soyabeans. My dogs vet said that it is good for dogs to eat some vegitables. Vet said that eating punpkin reduces tendency of cancer in dogs.

My dogs will almost eat anything you put in front of them. They're not picky. On the other hand, my neighbor's dogs eat better than most humans. She prepares their dinner along with her own. The have a lot of fruits and veggies. Applesauce is one of their favorites, along with red beets and green beans. I've seen their food dishes look better than my plate of food.

Hi sanjo0679, thanks for your response. Yeah, I believe some owners treat their dogs really good. We used to boil lamb steak for our dog. My dog seems to be a meat lover....

I hate dog but if it would any how bark is okay for me. I don't think dog like vegetable and food. Vegetable is good for health if you want them to eat, you may need to train them and let them get use to the taste bite.

Hi Janice_tan021, thanks for your response. I didn't like dogs either, until I have this dog. I never think I'd have a dog in my house too. Well, actually I just thought if my dog eats vegetables, then she'll have more variety of food, and not only have her dog food all the time.

My dogs eat all kinds of food all the time including vegetables and fruits. Their main meal consist of rice and meat(chicken / pork from soup) and we gave them dog biscuits and dog chew as regular snack instead. I also had a dog who loves durian. I had to admit though my dogs are all mixed breed and smaller size type. For your yellow Labrador, it's important for her to eat the dog food as main meal because it's fortified with minerals and vitamins due to her bigger size. however, you can still feed all kinds of other human food as snack or treats except chocolate, caffeine and a few others that I can't remember(these are actually poison to dogs). The rule of thumb is whatever that is good for human, is also good for dogs and whatever that's junk for us is twice a junk for dogs. One of the best way to get your dog to eat fruits is to share it with her ie when you eat apple, bite a bit for her and then a bite for yourself. As for vegetables, I cannot comment since we usually mixed them in their main meal. Hope this helps.

Hi alexlsp, thanks for your response. Well, I used to give my dog eat rice and bread, though she likes to eat, her fur started to drop a lot. So, my vet advised us to stop giving this kind of food. As for the fruits, actually it's when I was eating, she kept looking at me and looked interested in the fruit, so I just took a bite for her, but she just played for awhile, and left it.

hi kaka, I have a beige labrador. He is so greedy. He almost like to eat everything, meat, rice, vegetables, fruits, etc. You give him and he eats it. He usually drool when he wants to eat. This is the most funny thing. Don't give any seafood to your dog. They will have a weird smeel after eating it.

My present dog will eat almost anything! Perhaps because she was badly neglected before she was 'rescued'! Though most of my other dogs have liked them too. Even those things they shouldn't have like mushrooms, grapes, onions and potatoes. Most of those are poisonous in some way! She'll even eat a full apple with the pips but I try to make sure she only gets them cut up. The seeds are toxic to dogs! I never give her food processed for humans or chocolate (we had a dog nearly die eating just a small amount) or sweets! She's on a Raw diet (recommended by my Vet)and doesn't have commercial dog food so fruit and veg are an important part of her diet. She's a very fit and healthy dog now and she had terrible skin problems when we first got her besides being under-weight and having a serious protein deficency. The funny thing is I now have a cat that also loves fruit and vegetables! She's the only one of many I've had in the last 50+years that would eat them! Perhaps she feels if it's good enough for the dog it's good enough for her! lol. As long as your dog is on a good quality diet she'll be getting vegetable protein and possibly even fruit in her food so I wouldn't worry about her.

Yes. My dog eats some veg and fruits, but not a whole lot. He really seems to like olives though, but you have to smash it first or else he has a hard time eating it.

I have two chihuahuas, and both of them love fruits and vegetables, with a few exceptions. Neither will eat mushrooms (cooked or raw) or spinach. I also avoid giving either dog anything in the cabbage or onion families. LOL...if you happen to sleep with your dog, you don't need a gas problem-other than your spouse. I would think that the larger the dog, the less that they'd be apt to eat fruits and vegetables. In the wild, the larger the dog, the more apt they would be to be hunters for sustenance. On the other hand, smaller dogs would be scavangers, plus whatever they can catch for small animals (rodents, etc). The varied diet must be good for dogs, because I see more and more commercial foods containing them. It's probably more of a matter of introducing them, along with other foods that they like. With good medical care, as lifespans are increasing, diet is becoming more and more important.

Some dogs eat fruits and vegetables. Funnily enough I just got done with lunch and I fed my dog some broccoli. She loves it. I have fed all of my animals from the table my whole life. Not as their meal of course but ya know, table scraps... little snacks, like licking the plate or something. It doesn't hurt. In fact all of my cats have lived for over 20 years and my dogs have always lived past their life expectancy. You just have to do it in moderation. Moderation is always the key. There are many foods that are harmful for animals like; chocolate, coffee, garlic, gum... etc. I asked my vet about these and she said the amount of garlic in the spaghetti sauce left on a plate is no where close to harmful. If the dog would eat a full bulb of garlic then worry. But table scraps as long as they are moderate won't hurt. Also, if your dog or cat has sensitive skin the best thing is a food with Salmon or Omega-3. They are good for animals skin and coat. My cat has a food allergy. She always scratches around her face and neck. So I picked up a dry cat food from the pet store, it was labeled for animals with sensitive skin. It has helped tremendously. I think if you get a dog food specially formulated for animals with sensitive skin your dog should be fine with table scraps. And it isn't unusual for a dog to not like vegetables, I think its rather unusual for them to like them. lol.
