I Can Hardly Wait to Eat This

My first red AeroGarden tomato - Ahhh, but not the last! More are on the way.

Some of my myLot friends have already commented on my new tomato avatar. This came in an AeroGrow seed kit along with some yellow tomatoes and that plant produced a little earlier, so we have been enjoying eating those, but have not yet tasted any of our own homegrown red ones yet. It took a little over two months for the plants to grow indoors with their roots in the water and bright lamps overhead. After waiting and anticipating this first red tomato for so long, it had better taste really good! The kit had both red and yellow ones, and the yellows grew faster, so we have been eating a few of those and they are delicious. It is just that it takes them so long to ripen even after the little baby tomatoes get big enough to see. Is there any food that you waited a long time in anticipation of eating? Did it live up to your expectations? At the risk of making everyone here hungry, please describe the food you had to wait to eat! Why did you have to wait? Will you want it again soon? Will you get it again soon? Have fun with this:-}Below is a bigger photo of my new avatar:

Are we talking about food that we grow ourselves and then wait? Or are we talking about food we get from the restaurant? Because last Friday night, Boyfriend and I went to a favorite Chinese restaurant and because I've been craving their wonton soup, burned my tongue from tasting it even though the bowl was still steaming hot. But I think you're talking about garden-grown food here and again, I haven't had any of those. Until now, my pots of basil and whatever I have out there are still tiny... I don't know, I haven't checked on them for a while now since I am no longer interested (discouraged is more like it). Do you think it would be too much to put this Aerogrow on my Christmas wish list? I really want to take a bite off that tomato. And I don't even crave tomatoes.

We can talk about any kind of food at all whether in a restaurant or a festival or as in my case on the table next to me! It is really easy to grow basil in water, but I don't have any tips for growing it in dirt. There I would be discouraged too! Oh, and I ALWAYS burn myself on wonton soup. It is so good that I cannot make myself wait. Hubby pours a little ice water in his. The smarty!

I took a peek at them a minute ago and I think I should just toss them out. Good thing I only used half of each packet so I will try again with the other half at Boyfriend's place. I will try the iced water on wonton soup next time. Does your hubby have any smart idea on how not to further burn your tongue with hot veggie rolls? Seriously, that tomato is so good-looking... I whistle at it!

You had your plants growing 'out' where Ms Saintly? I got pretty discouraged myself with my attempts at having tomatoes and basil to eat throughout the winter... WAH! I want one of those kits too!!!

That yellow tomatoes does look yummy... so juicy and sweet... now my mouth is watering... i want one too... Well, a few hours... i was so hungry... i was in a meeting that lasted for about three hours... and since i did not eat any breakfast... and i was not able to take early lunch... but the time it was finish... i was so hungry i can eat anything... my companion and i went to a restaurant and asked them the fastest food they can cook in the menu... we ordered that... but we still waited for like 20 minutes... and when it was served... well... good thing it was worth the wait... since the chicken was quite delicious... and i ate every bit of rice on my plate... I will surely order that food again even if i am not that hungry...

When you are very hungry, twenty minutes is a long time to wait in a restaurant where you can see and smell the other people's food! We ate some of our yummy greens for dinner tonight, both lettuce from our garden and also some cooked greens that go good with potatoes and sausage. I love to eat food that we grew ourselves.

There are a few foods that are amazingly simply to grow and anyone could do it, but this is just not commonly known. I am working on some articles designed to show people how easy it is. I'm learning that tomatoes are really not all that difficult, if one is not concerned with optimal yield. I'm not fussy about the quantity of fruit we get as long as it is delicious and makes an interesting houseplant.

That's such a luscious tomato! I thought it was an orange though! That must have felt out of the world on looking at them! Home grown vegetable and fruits are indeed sweeter. I remember waiting for the plantains, papayas, pears, mangoes and all those farm vegetables when my grand parents were there. But this is a new concept for me and we will have wait to get this here in India. Good luck on your red tomatoes! Keep us informed! And don't forget the AC review.

Hi my friend :) I had not reached this discussion yet - yes... there are still over 200 notifications in my mail box since I really haven't been here lately hehe But I seen your new avatar in another discussion and I thought to myself " could this be from her aerogrow? " It looks wonderful and one more reason for me to start saving to buy it. Food that I had to wait to eat? Some. But it was worth the wait - as I can see is happening to you as well :)WOuld I get it again? definitely :)

It was over 300 but I've been working hard LOL I thought I should not delete them so even at times when there aren't many discussions to respond to I can always go trough those :) But back to the tomato: LOoks gorgeous. I was hoping for the aerogarden for CHristmas but with the expenses this weekend I guess it will have to wait.

That is a lot of notifications. Thank heavens for gmail whch lets us divert them all into a separate folder. When we come back from vacation, I have to just delete them all, but then I go around to my "regulars" to see what they have been up to, after I pop seeds in our AeroGardens, that is. Gotta get all that produce growing. Yums, yums.

I bet you must have been eating lots of homegrown tomatoes lately.. Tomatoes are cool. I hear it's so good for the skin, for getting a smooth complexion or some sort. Growing all these is just so cool, drannhh. You can save a lot of money too.. awesome..

I love fresh tomatoes, but nothing beats a potatoe out of the garden! I use them in everything. They don't all get big enough to eat so I can those and use later in the winter for mashed potatoes - oh the flavor in them! LOL also use the liquid from canning for potatoe bread - double bonus!!!

Oh, that is a tasty double bonus, and YAYYY, I have finally met someone who appears to be as frugal as me. I have indeed eaten potatoes right out of the garden, and yes, they are unbeatable. My parents were avid dirt gardeners and grew everything from peanuts to sugar cane, raspberries to rhubard, oh, and speaking of heavenly, those little bowling ball shaped "individual" watermelons...Sweet. I lived in the city so many years I've forgotten a lot of what used to go on in the garden, and we don't have dirt of our own to cultivate, but I'm learning about hydroponic gardening and grew (and ate) quite a few different yummy things in containers of water on the porch this past year and wrote about some of them in my blog entitled Ann's Air Gardens. Welcome to myLot, kprofgames, congrats on getting past the first 500 posts, and thanks for contributing to my discussion :-)

I just dropped by to say that that tomato looks really, really good. I'm not a big fan of fresh tomatoes, though, in terms of eating. But, I do like the way yours work. It looks perfect to me. I hope it tastes good to you, too.

It was so delicious. Usually if the tomatoes are store bought, I just look at them and say I guess I should eat that, but... However when we grow our own the flavor is beyond compare. Glad you stopped by.

Wow! it really looks good to eat. Can I have some? I used to plant tomatoes in our front yard back in my elementary years. Since I got nothing to do besides playing, I enjoyed gardening and found it really really fun. I also planted ornaments and other easy to plant plants. I wish I still have some time and resources here in the city to do some planting activities again.

The electronic planters we use to grow things inside our city apartment are not widely available outside of the US and England just yet, but it is just a matter of time. Yes, you certainly may have the next one that ripens!

I'm growing chilli's tomatoes and cauliflowers as well as one Pumpkin, we've eaten the peas I will harvesting the last of them later I think. None of the chilli's have turned red yet, though quite a few a forming so we will be eating them soon and some of my tomatoes are going red so I'll have some of them to eat soon too. I've not heard of an aero garden before I'll have to look it up, does it take up less room than growing indoors in pots the old fashioned way?

Since there is no dirt, the AeroGarden takes up less room for me because of all the dirt gardening supplies that do not need to be stored. The space it takes is just the size of the garden itself: http://www.productdose.com/images/custom/microappliances/aerogarden.jpg They come in several sizes, the smallest is just 10" around. The small ones are wonderful for kitchen herbs, easy flowering plants such as petunias, and my favorite use, rooting cuttings. The only problem with them is they are expensive and addicting. Although I don't actually change out the lamps every 6 months as they say to do, the replacement lamps are costly, and although energy-efficient, they do consume some power, so there is a cost there, too. Why addicting? Because they make it so clean and easy to grow exciting plants, one wants to grow more and more of them and the AG's come with just 3, 6 or 7 grow holes depending on which model you choose. So in order to have an interesting and edible garden producing on a continuing basis, I found I needed 4 or 5 of them--one for salad munchies, one for flowers, a couple for veggies such as tomatoes and peppers, and at least one for experiments. But just think--no caterpillars on the tomatoes! The only bugs I ever had on AeroGarden plants were whiteflies, and with those I had to kill the plants and start over.

I absolutely love tomatoes! Sometimes I just slice them up, put a little salt and pepper on them, and eat them like that. When I was in the Peace Corps, I tried to grow all sorts of herbs. I couldn't wait for that. And I especially couldn't wait for the basil to come. Unfortunately, none of them ever grew.

Hi, Brian! I like pepper on my tomatoes, too, and also fresh basil, but I'll pass on the salt. A little sea salt does wonders for some foods, though :-) Well, basil is very fast growing in water, but I agree with you I can't wait for it to come in dirt. You might try just sticking a sprig from someone else's garden in a glass of water on a sunny window sill. Usually it roots in as little as 4 days and you can keep it growing in water for a very long time just by continually starting new cuttings. Well, a little plant food now and then doesn't hurt either. Thanks for visiting my cyber-garden.

Actually I bought an AeroGarden not that long ago. And I like the idea of it being inside and not having to worry about the bugs. My first items I grew was the different types of lettuce. I was disappointed in it because the lettece tasted funny and when you put the salad dressing on it. It wilted the lettuce it was like it wasn't crunchy. So I was thinking of buying some tomatoes and trying that. So have they tasted just like the tomatoes in the store? Really juicy and flavorful? Let me know you may make up my mind to try them out again. After the lettuce I just cleaned it up and I haven't used it. I was going to save it when I want to make my own seedlings for my garden outdoors. But if I can get some fresh tomatoes now that would be great.

I have not tried the official AeroGrow lettuce kits, but the romaine lettuce we bought from Johnny's Seeds (the pelleted Green Forest Organic) was crisp and delicious and grew huge. As it is cut and come again we did enjoy quite a few salads from that. We did grow their tomato kit though, and although the golden cherries started ripening first and they are quite delicious, both the taste and the texture of the red one, which we ate tonight, was just outstanding. It had so much flavor, I could hardly believe it. It may have been a bit riper than the yellow ones we ate though, so I'll let the next yellow ripen more and see if it compares. I prefer just starting the tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc., in the AeroGarden and moving them into a separate pot once they are off to a good start because we could be eating a whole lot of salad greens in the time it takes to grow a few tomatoes. But as hubby said tonight, "That was worth waiting for!" Well, I fed him our first jalapeno tonight, too.

I have to say I am not a big fan of veggies but that tomato pic looks very appetizing,it looks beautiful enough to want to eat..I am a picky eater as a rule but once a friend of mine kept going on and on about how good sushi was so I was eager to try it..so finally she took me too this restaurant for it and I thought it was awful and made me gag, lol! Was dissapointing as she made it sound so good but I didn't like it all it is not for everyone. Now I can't look at sushi now without shuddering, lol! But I really love good home cooking my grandmother was a great cook, she could get me to try almost anything and I always looked forward to being invited there and her desserts oh my.....heavenly...when we would drive down to see her my mouth would be watering, lol. She made this great lasagna that she would always make special for me as it was my favorite.I have her recipe for alot of what she made that I loved but they aren't quite like hers though but still really good.

We'll just pretend the tomato is a fruit, ok? The homegrown ones are so sweet and delicious they may as well be fruit anytway. Mmmm, Lasagna and Sushi have one thing in common--when made well they are yummy, but if not made well they can be awful. Good lasagna is wonderful. My favorite kind, though, is the kind with white gravy and veggies in it....mmmm.

Thank you subha, and perhaps you also grow methi? That crop is not widely cultivated here, but I grow mine and enjoy eating it over potatoes, sauteeed in a skillet, maybe with egg, too. Bringles is a new word to me, though. I have heard the expression "pickled bringles" before but have no idea what that is. Can you describe bringles for me?

that is a pretty nice looking tomato! i once was growing sugar snap peas and onions. the sugar snap peas actually grew pretty fast..but it never is fast enough lol! but they were worth waiting for..i just love how they snap lol!! the onions i weekly dug around to see if they were ready yet..which didnt help their whole growing process one bit im sure! they took months! not sure how long they shouldve taken..but im positive i made it longer just by being over-anxious and "checking" on them! i really must learn to exercise that little smidgen of patience i DO have!

Yes, I am an over-anxious gardener too. I'm growing snap beans for the first time and got so excited when the first small pod appeared. So excited that I have a little growth chart for it recorded on a 3 x 5 card to see how much longer it gets every day or week or whatever, assuming the birds don't get it first. The pot is eye level on the window sill of our porch and in a limb of a tree just across the sidewalk I'm sure I saw a bird getting interested in the plants, but it was probably the cherry tomatoes he hoped to snag. Hubby and I have a small bet going as to whether or not the bird will figure out how to get inside and beat us to the porch tomatoes. This is is inside, so it is safe.

Mini Oranges - A bonsai plant yielding tiny oranges. Want to taste some? :)
The picture of your tomato show a perfect beauty. It is delicious too. What more one can ask for drannhh. I am surprised that with just water and light from the lamps have succeeded in producing such a lovely and big tomato. Great job drannhh!!I wait for the mangoes to get ripe fast every year. We have some mango trees and some of them bear really delicious mangoes. Apart from that presently our bonsai oranges look like they'll be ready in a couple of days. Don't know how they taste as we got the plant some months ago and would love to atleast taste one when its fully ripe. You can see its photo below.

Great looking tomato - good job! I planted a very small garden alongside my house and in a few containers this year and did pretty well. I don't even like tomatoes, but I had several plants for my husband and they grew very tall and bore wonderful fruit. He was very happy with what I was able to do and reaped the benefits of my meager labors. I had a couple of cucumber plants and I couldn't wait for them since I love to make a cucumber salad. They sure were good, fresh from the garden. I also had a few bean and snap pea plants, but I ate most of those straight from the plant before I even got into the house!

You are my kind of gardener! I eat things straight from the plant, too, especially these indoor grown things that have not had bugs crawl all over them. The tomatoes we grow taste much different from the ones in the grocery store, don't they! I am doing cukes and snap beans too, and bought the pea kit for our AeroGarden, but have not tried that one yet.
