This is scary! Human brain/Machine direct interface is here.

This is the scariest thing I believe I've ever seen in my lifetime. A contraption has finally been made that will read human brainwaves and relay them directly into a computer game. If you want a game character to pick up a particular object, just think about it and it happens. If you want your character to fly, again, just think about it. No buttons to push, just thought. You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7utG3NqhBoU I agree that technological advances are awesome and that some are extremely beneficial to mankind but I think this is just TOO scary! Imagine the implications! What are your thoughts on this? A contraption that can read and relay our thoughts and feelings directly to a computer? I don't even want to think of future implications!

Hello, Mentalward! Wow, that is way too advanced technology. I knew I would be born to watch this! Really impressive. I don't think that you should be afraid of it, though. It is just a headset, it will not kill you nor anything. Perhaps it might cause some kind of disease, such as cancer, but I don't see this kind of technology used as a weapon. What would somebody do? Nothing. There is nothing that can be done to harm others with it. Don't be afraid. Be curious. I'd like to test this. I don't think it is possible for this to be happening, because our thoughts are not clear. There are thoughts from the unconscious as well, which might implicate in the game play. Respectfully, Munhozmib.

Wow...I think that's amazing. And I thought it could only happen in the movies or something.

Yep, I saw that movie, mechanic. I laughed myself silly! I don't think men would really want to read the minds of women. It might drive them insane!

hi mentalward! is that right? yeah, i agree with you. it is both cool, but also VERY SCARY! i mean, even the devil is supposed to not be able to read our minds. anyway, i wonder where these inventions will lead the human race? and what evils will these bring? take care and God bless you! :-)

Maybe this just means that I'm getting old. I'm starting to remember "the good old days" when things were simple and uncomplicated. Televisions had a dial that you had to get up and change by hand and you have 3 channels to choose from.

That is a really scary thing isn't it. It is neat to think it can be done, but scary what someone will come up with to use it wrongly.

but what about the paralized person that can think something and the artifical hand will pick something up for him?

I saw that too, and I think this will be a great thing for many people!

Actually, there's already something out that is very similar. I saw a show on TV about this very thing. A quadraplegic was fitted with an apparatus that he wore on his arm. With only his thought, he was able to move his arm and pick up an apple and take a bite, also pick up a cup and drink from it. I hope that will soon become financially viable for everyone who would like it.

Machines that can read brainwaves have been around for ages. Think ECGs, EEGs and you will know what I mean. But to the point it can tell the computer what to do... that is still the stuff of science fiction. And with advances in science and technology, I am sure that too will one day become a reality. One where machine and man can function as one. There are benefits to this kind of technology if you think about it. Imagine if you have a robotic arm that can respond to your thoughts much like what a real arm would do. The kind of normality it can bring to amputees if this technology can really work! Or the mobility to paralyzed people who have an active mind but a wasted body? Cybernetics is the future my friend! Of course, with new technology, there is bound to be a bunch of people who will find a way to abuse it! The implications are very grave and serious. But the benefits such technology will bring is also limitless. I guess it is a matter of balance. Like the internet, it is a beneficial tool that is used by one and all. But it is also the tool that many people like hackers, pedeophiles, identity thiefs... etc also used to commit crimes. Yet the internet is a popular means of communication used by the masses. I am sure cybernetics like what you have seen in the video will do the same as well. It is always about balance.

I would love to try a virtual reality game that would implement this technology. It would be great for MMORPGs. I also think that this technology could be dangerous. Like how some people think that violent video games create violent individuals, this might create some negative consequences too.

This is awesome, I would love to get my hands on it and play and not to mention understand the technology behind it ( I am a geek..what can I say!) This has so many implications - for people with neuro/muscular problems. I work with developmentally disabled adult, they are autistic and essentially non-verbal..could this be used to teach them to communicate in a more effective way? I often wish I knew what they were thinking, wishing that they had thought bubbles - could this be a future use of it or spin off? I think this is incredible - if you want to reserve this to buy- it is only $299...I would say that the current generations of computer games might be in a world of trouble shortly. Thanks for the link....

Like you, I don't find this exciting at all. I don't like ppl being able to know what's in my head. That's a rather personal place that no one can go in except me. I did notice that their logo was "We know what your thinking"...not a comforting thought. I'd rather stick with doing things the way I am then having strangers going through my thoughts. BTW, the way the smiley mimic'ed that guy was really creepy too. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG AND TRUST IN GOD**

That is scary, I agree. Pretty soon we'll see people spending their lives in chairs that move their muscles, remove their waste, feed them through IVs while they play games in a virtual universe. *shiver*

Oh my HOTT DOG! What have they come up with now?.. I'm afraid to know what would be next, but then again I'm actually looking forward to it. I gotta get me one of those.

Wow, very impressive what people can develop these days. I think it's very smart and it seems it's first introduced as a gaming device. But pretty scary that people are developing something that's so close to our inner thoughts. And what if we don't mean to think to do that but it happened anyway. We'll be too conscious of everything to think straight. I think there's no fun in just thinking it but to physically do it. This technology will be more helpful in other areas and for handicapped people as mentioned above.

What a wonderful thing for paralised people or limited movements they will be able to communicate. They do say some people in certain states still think the bodies packed up but the brain is still ok and they are trapped I think this is wonderful.

That would be a great advance to technology. It will be just like in the game itself but is there any side effect. We don't know if that would affect our brains making it too tired or something like that. Everything has its advantages as well as disadvantages. That's the scary part, the disadvantages. They can be fatal to our brain and the brain is one of the main part of the body. But if we think only about bad thing, disadvantages, then there would be no progress in science. The world needs to keep on improving and that is what we also need to do.

Now this is definitely one piece of machinery I want to stray away from! I think this is a dangerous thing. Just think what it can be used for. I had rather keep my thoughts to myself! If the government gets hold of this contraption, there is no telling what will happen in years to come.

Yes, I have read about it somewhere before. I also watched a documentary related to this issue. This is a great technological advancement. And it will be a great experience for those who enjoy playing computer games. But what I am not sure of is how much research they've done into this in terms of the negative effects that it can have on the human brain. It can have serious negative implications that must be prevented.
