What do you do when the sky is dark and there is thunder and lightening forcasting heavy rains?Thunder is loud and frightening. But lightening is dangerous and can create more havoc. What do you do when there is thunder and lightening when you are outdoors or indoors?

I don't remember outdoors during thunder and lightening recently. I just enjoy them indoors.Usually I like violent incessant downpours. I hear the rumble ringing through the night. I see the streak of flashing light. It makes the clouds glow all around As again I hear that rumbling sound The rain falls harsh and splashes high As once more the lightning lights up the sky. There are those who fear this cosmic charge The sound so loud and the lightning so large But I watch it as a little child with wondrous eye. This is what I used to be since my childhood where I was in hill country in Sri Lanka.

It used to pour almost round the year in the place where I was as a boy.But the streets were never flooded and you cannot see a drop water stagnant on the road after the rain. The storm water drainage was so excellent there. The recent rains in Tamil Nadu where nearly 200 people perished may look like a drizzle there.Rainy season is never a season of flood ,filth and cholera there. No wonder I still love thunder clouds and lightnings.

Hi bala...I too used to enjoy thunder and lightening and dance around peeping from each window of my house, excitedly, though I never ventured to write poetry on it......But about 6 years ago, lightening stuck a tree behind my house and through the lamp post on the terrace it enterd my house and damaged many electric appliances and wiring.Fortunately I had just finished talking on the phone and my younger son had just finished raiding the fridge. Our electrician said we both had a lucky escape. Now I no longer enjoy the thunder and lightening ,and just switch off all electric appliances and wait for natures's fury to stop......

Oh you still dream of your past when there is thunder and lightening.I am sure In chennai its not so pleasant now,and the roads get flooded easily causing traffic jam in most places .Here also things are improving as in the metros.....and we have flooded roads even if there is a slight drizzle, with the sewage being in poor condition, and there is no outlet for rain water to flow away.....We just wait for the sun to come and dry the roads........... sigh.......When will things ever improve Bala.....????

Hello Rose. When it thunders and lightens, I try to avoid walking outside, but stay in the house. I feel scared about the sharp and violent lightening. I still remember there was one late afternoon when I was still a child, I happened to have experienced a loud and terrifying lightening dropping at the bottom of my feet, which was such a hazard to me. I was carrying s smaller boy on my back, who was my neighbor's son. Fortunately, we were out of the havoc. Later we stayed in a neighbor's house to wait for the end of the rain with the continuous terrible lightening. It was an experience that I will never forget and it is deeply impressed in my mind. Also when I was a kid, I used to hide under the big dinning table when it started with thunder and lightening. I have always considered it to be very dangerous to walk or to be outside during lightening and thundering moments. Better to stay inside than to walk out in this case. Thank you for the discussion and take care, friend.

Hi W.J.S.....Well you did have a terrifying experince when you were a child, and I can imagine how much it must have sraed you then.Any way I am glad you escaped unhurt. Infact I too had a terrifying experience about 6 to 7 years ago.Once a lightening struck a tree behind my house, then travelled through the electric post into my house and damaged many electric appliances inside the house. From that day onwards I never use the telephone or other electric appliances when there is lightning.....,and switch off the TV and Pc too ......Its best to be careful during such times......

LOL! My everyday life is not less than any thunder or lightening. I experience it quite often, albeit in a different manner. Jokes apart, when there is thunder and lightening our natural reaction is take shelter, wherever possible and to safeguard ourselves. We also fear that thunder or lightening may not cause any havoc. But it reminds me of a saying - "those who thunder, do not rain", so whenever such a situation is there, I recall that saying and feel alright. I suppose high rising buildings have device to neutral the lightening effect. How do you feel in such a situation?

Yes, you have given a very useful suggestions and we should do accordingly, in case of lightening or thunder. OH! Nice to know that you enjoy lightening from your apartment, which is very well above the ground floor.........LOL!

You know Dpk,once lightening hit my house about 6 to 7 years back.It actually hit a tree behind my house, then through the electric post it entered my house and destroyed many electric appliances.Fortunately I had just put down the phone before it stuck, and my son had just closed the fridge door, otherwise both of us would have been badly burnt........It was a shocking experience...So now I am careful to disconnect all electric appliances when there is lightening. But in my flat its a lot safer, and its nice to watch the rain and the lightening .....

Hi Dpk,I was referring to the conventional thunder and lightening only.......Well lightening is dangerous and we are advised to disconnect all electric appliances like TV,telephones, PCs etc when there is heavy lightening.Well in high rise buildings they do have additional protection from lightning. Its fun to watch the lightening from my apartment.....and is less scary than watching it from the ground floor of our houses.....

Hi Cupie....yes its nice to watch the thinder and lightening from a safe distance. But if you are travelling when there is lightening,I guess its ok because you are always on the move while travelling.Only thing is you should not stand or park your car under a tree. When you are indoors and caught in heavy lighening, its best to switch off all electric appliances and not to use the phone or TV or pc,till the thinder and lightening subsides..........

I am not scared of thunder and lightening. It may be because I have not seen it creating any havoc. I have not experienced a storm either so I do not know how frightening the thunder and lightening could exactly be. May be I should come down south during the rains and see!!!

It may be that because of a lot of buildings around I have not been able to experience an awful thunder and lightening. So I have not realised how harmful and frightening it can be. Lucky you and your son escaped without any harm.

Yes mayka it was a narrow, but lucky escape for me and my son.... I think if you are staying in high rise buildings, you will not feel the effect of thunder and lightening to a great extent. For that you have to live in the ground floor of a house.......

Hi Mayka..its not going to be fun to be in the center of a storm, let alone rains with thunder and lightening........Actually I used to enjoy watching the lightening ,though the sound of thunder in quick succession is very unnerving.Once the lightening actually struck a tree behind my house, and through the electric lamp on the terrace,it hit the electric box in my house causing damage to many electric appliances. We were relieved that it caused only financial lose, and that it did not harm me or my son who were inside the house.....

I really don't bother much with it. But I had an aunt and everytime we visited her and there would be thunder and lightening (and happened quite a lot in Malappuram)...she would make us sit on a wooden chair and keep our legs off the floor!! I found it very funny....she's no more....but I remember her with incidents like this.

Hi SV.....Even I didnt take lightening and thunder very seriously. But one day about 6 years back lightning struck a tree behind my house, and through the terrace lamp,it entered my house and destroyed many electric appliances. It was in the month of April at about 3.30 pm,and it wasnt even raining.Fortunately my son had just finished raiding the fridge, and I had put down the phone, before it struck, otherwise both of us would have got burnt at that time......It was a shocking experience, and we were happy that we lost only about 15,000 Rs worth of equipments only. BTw how r u ?Its ages since I heard from you or saw you on mylot.....

If I am indoors, then I will unplug the TV and turn off my computer. Although I am unwilling to do so. But in order to avoid any accidents, I have to do so. If I am outdoors, I will be scared and perhaps try to enter to a building rather than stay outside for a long time. I love China

Hi Rose, For most of my life I've feared Thunder and lightening and it's only in recent years that I don't let it really bother me. I believe a fear of such things may come from a parents attitude towards it when one is quite young. Blessings.

Well if a storm comes up when I am outdoors, I try to seek shelter indoors. I don't like the idea of being outside in severe weather, but there have been times in the past when the types of work I did made it necessary. I never really got used to it, but I learned to put it in the back of my mind and do what I have to do. When I am indoors, I usually don't give it a second thought. I actually like to watch the lightning during a storm. My dogs hate the thunder, and they usually hide under the couch or under their blanket, but it doesn't usually bother me unless it is really loud, because I hate loud noises that remind me of gunshots...

Honestly am not scared to either of them, I mean they are natural phenomenom. When we were kids we usually crouched inside a blanket and laugh when there were thunders and lightnings and our grandma scolds us because it might made more of them in doing so (she was a little superstiteous). When I'll be indoor I will cover the big mirrors or glasses because it's a fact that these stuff might be broken when lightnings strike. If I'll be outdoors I'll probably look for shelters to avoid p;ossible damaged by it.

Hi Rose, It is a normal scene in our state. It is really dangerous also. Many got killed and many houses destroyed. Animals also got killed so everyone in the state is very scared about the same. I also scared the situation and if we are standing outside the house jumped into the house (think that we are safe inside house, but the truth is not like that). A lot to do at home also disconnect the telephone line, switching off the tv etc. I think this situation is mainly in our state. May be there are lot of trees (I don't know the exact reason). What about you? Do you have fear of the same?

Hi Rose, I am also glad to know that both of you were safe. Yes you are right in monsoon there is not much problem but in the months of October-November (Thulavarsham) we got less rain and lightening & thunder creates havoc especially in the evening time.

Hi Sree.....Yes heavy rains and particularly lightening cause great havoc in our state. It is said that when there is thunder and lightening without rains, then only it is more dangerous.Once about 6 years ago, such a lightening struck a tree behind my house, and through the electric pole on my terrace,it entered my house, and destroyed many electric appliances inside the house.Fortunately,I had just kept down the phone receiver, and my son had juststopped raiding the fridge, and had closed the door.So both of us were not hurt. And we were glad that we had to face some financial loss alone.....

Yes Sree, but this incidnet happened in the month of april at around 3.30 pm.......There was no rain ,and suddenly just one sharp thunder was heard ,followed by lightening, and then the pewer supply went off....it was when the electrician came and examined the fuse box, that he told us it was a miracle that both of us escaped scot fee.Any way we cut down the tree, and replaced the burnt wiring..........
