Nervous about Ordering On Line

Canada
December 28, 2008 6:24am CST
I know ordering on line is now the way of the future and I must say for anyone having trouble getting around it's a great way to do business, but even though I look to see that it's a secure site I am always nervous about leaving my credit card information. My question is: Has anyone ever had any credit card problems or any troubled disaster stories with shopping on line? Thank You dear friends.

That hasn't happened to me but there is a slight danger. As Aeros has said,it's safer to stick to PayPal or shop from well-known websites such as Buy.com or Amazon.I myself love Ebay-most stuff is cheaper,PayPal is preferred method of payment and you can check the rating of your merchant. So far everyone I bought stuff from was prompt and honest but beware if you see 60% positive reviews! lol That was an exaggeration

I like your answer and I can agree that shopping with Pay Pal or well known sites is best but I have just ordered two items I desperately wanted and neither was with Pay Pal and was a seen on TV offer. I hope it'll be OK.

You should be fine.I once ordered some stuff from "As seen on TV" and everything was nice and smooth with no worries about my credit card. However,I got quite amused and a bit mad when I saw these items at a regular store for half the price!

Hi Grandma, First of all every time I see your little girl there I think of my new puppy Dexter. Both different but adorable. Anyway, yes I have had trouble with a few things. But not with reputable sites. There is a Wu Tea site which is a scam. That was recently. It's things like that you have to beware of. Thankfully It was only a minor loss but a loss . I ended up closing my account. Because the banks are becoming less and less helpful. It use to be if someone debited your account without authorization, they'd send it back. Now not only do they not send it back, but if it causes an over draft, you are stuck with paying both. So When I'm financially on my feet again, I will be extremely careful who I deal with online. Hugsss leenie

that must be quite a blow to you, leenie. imagine having to close an account just because you have committed the error of having ordered online from a scam site. i wonder as to who can check on this thing so we can at last be free of them.

Trouble is as technology advances so does theft! And with identifications being stolen you always fear the worst, I know people must do it all around the world use credit cards etc but you always think aaaaah but it could happen, and knowing my luck it will happen to me, most of my stuff I buy through Ebay and I always use Paypal, I feel confident with Paypal and touch wood they have never let me down and I can always rely on them if, hopefully it never will someone hacked into my account. It's always best to be safe than sorry. I always try and find sites that accept Paypal as payment or quite simply I will go with out.

You're obviously a very smart person and I agree with you 100 percent but I have found items I am unable to buy here that I want desperately and it usually happens to be one of those Seen On TV items. I refuse to order on the phone but now I have made two purchases on line and I have printed a copy of my purchase. So all fingers crossed. Like wise I have had nothing but good luck with Pay Pal and Ebay.

I have never had any problems and I think it is because for all my (many) online purchases I only use my Discover Credit Card and they give the merchant a different number for each purchase so they never get your actual credit card number. That also makes it real easy to dispute a false charge if they try and use the number more than once.

The only trouble I had was when I ordered something from the States and they did not have enough spaces for me to enter the Postal Code and then I had to call their toll free number and if that did not work, had to cancel the order. In that case, they did say they shipped to Canada. The second was when putting a credit card down, you have to enter it without spaces and then I had to email or get on the toll free line to get that fixed up. Those are the main problems, as well as forgetting to enter that number on the back of your card, forgetting to enter the expiry date. You also have to watch out for shipping and handling fees, and if not in the States, the duty - it might be added later - so you have to watch for the email from the company that tells when your order will be shipped and after that. Then you have to see if the url says "https" not just "http --" and the little padlock in the bottom.

When I first got my computer, I had no intentions of buying anything online. Then I discovered ebay, and paypal. I have also bought online at other sites. I have never had any problems. Paypal is really good to use when buying online, they are a secure site. Here is an easy way to know if you are on a secure site when giving out sensitive info. Look at the address bar, it should say https: the s means secure. There also should be a little lock sign, and probably the word verisign, thats means its a secure site too. You just have to becareful where you shop. Don't give out any info through an email, always go to the site on your own. Also never sign into someplace like paypal or ebay through an email. You will sometimes get phoney emails that look like they come from ebay or paypal. As for my selling on ebay, I have made it my policy to only accept payment through paypal. I have people asking if I will take a check or money order, I don't want the hassle and plus its too easy to get over on someone. Take care my friend, and happy and safe shopping. I also wish you a Joyous New Year. I am still doing the hapy dance about the house apes not living here anymore, hehe. My little guy comes over alot and spends the night. Thats fine with me, he said something so sweet to me, he said he was going to Marry me, He will be 4 next month. He loves his gramma that much. He makes me feel so special.

That would have made me nervous too. Sometimes you just don't know if its a legit site. With you living in Canada that does add to the shipping cost, but they should be up front about that. With my ebay selling, I just ship in the US, nothing against anybody, its just the cost of shipping. Shipping cost is so high anyway, then when it goes to Canada its really high. I don't ship to Hawaii neither, it just cost way to much. I have bought things from Amazon and had no problems. I have also bought from Avon and a few other well known places. When in doubt I call them on the phone and place my order.

Well Thank You so much Polly!!! I didn't know anything till I posted this and now I know what to look for. I have used Ebay and Pay Pal and I love it, no problem but it's the "As Seen On TV" items I ordered. I ordered something worth 29.99 and they said the s&h would be 7.95, so I paid with credit card. Within minutes a printable reciept was sent to me for 55.00. They said there was an additional 10.00 for Canada and the rest was for s&h. Then I got an Email and it asks me to submitt my info again because I may qualify for a coupon for free shipping. I imediately called the phone number on the back of my credit card and asked if the charges went through yet and they said no. Thank God. I asked the guy on the phone to Please not issue funds and first thing in the morning I will call the bank.

I've spent lots of money on-line...probably thousands over the years and I have never had even one problem or issue with things going wrong. It's not just the buying online...when I was working my wages were deposited directly into my bank account, I now do all my banking online....transfers, bill-paying, everything. I live in a remote community and the banks are a long way away. I also feel safer not having lots of cash around or on me when I shop. Think positive my dear...most of the negatives will be from people who have somehow stuffed things up for themselves. Your money is very secure online whether you keep it in a bank or spend it.

I had some money taken from my credit card, but that was before I had a computer. I had paid for something in a store and the employer had written down my card number. However, I got the money back from the credit card company once I had reported it to the police. I think it is safe to buy things on line providing you take the adequate precautions by making sure you are on a secure site and you know the company that you are buying from has a good reputation, or at least you can check them out. Also it is wise to check with your credit card supplier to see if your card is insured - most of them are. I would never use my debit card on line though as that does not carry the same safeguards.. :-) Derek

I've never had a problem, and I buy at least once a week. Some sites let you buy without registering, and the information is deleted as soon as the transaction is finished. Even when you do register on the site, you can just say no when they ask if you want them to remember the credit card info. I use s debit card now instead of a credit card, or I use PayPal. Using that, your info is only entered on the PayPal site. This keeps life simple.

you know, i do have the same fears as you. so i've decided to just stick to using paypal. i don't give my credit card info away and so i won't be thinking day and night about someone there trying to "steal" my money.

I always use PayPal for my EBay purchases and occasionally for other sites as you only need to give your email address but I still prefer Discover Credit Card as they give a new number for each purchase, this is linked to your actual number but the merchants never sees it. That way you know if the merchant has tried to use your number a second time and it is easily disputed by Discover customer service.

No need to be nervous about ordering online, just be careful where you shop from and make sure the store seems legit.

I have that same fear Grandmaof2. I will fill out an order form and get as far as the card number and stop. I have been looking into other ways of shopping online. I was searching for a reloadable card. Where you can put a certain amount of money on a card. I haven't found one yet. I don't want a card where someone or company have access to my account and can get or draw money out at will.

I haven't got to the bank yet but when I go I'm going to ask about getting a credit card with a very small credit amount and that way no one would ever be able to get more than your limit. I thought of a credit limit of lets say 200.00 so in other words that would be the worst case senerio you'd be out the 200.00. I don't know??? Thank You for being here I appreciate my friends here and that I Do Know. lol Happoy New Year

I am sure everyone has had the same anxiety about ordering online like you have; always make sure there is a secure session when you do this, it should indicate this on the site and also you can check this by making sure there is a padlock showing on any corners of the site's page you're in... Haven't had any problems so far, I tend to shop online, including my grocery shopping sometimes, DVDs, furniture etc for delivery and have had no issues yet

I think if you order from a reputable site like amazon.com you don't have to worry. I've ordered tons of things from them and never had a problem. I order online all the time. Sometimes I think its actually safer than using a debit or credit card in a store, because people can sometimes look at your numbers and pin. I heard of people using cell phones to take pictures of your card in stores- that's why if I ever see someone on a cell phone behind me at the check-out counter, I cover my card. Anyway, I've never had a problem. I think its not any more of a danger ordering online than purchasing any other way. But stick to trusted sites like Amazon and others that have a good reputation. Of course, you can always use paypal, if the seller accepts it (I don't think Amazon does)
28 Dec 08
I completely agree, if yo uuse reputable websites, you will be safe. I have used Amazon countless number of times ordering games and other electronic items. I have never had a problem and if I do, I can contact Amazon via telephone or email. I also use eBay which I have had a few problems, but I've always got my money back when I am having a problem. The key to online shopping is good communication.

I have not. I have done a lot of shopping online without problem. In fact, the only time I had a problem was with a local bank account, and it turned out nothing to do with my activity online. I do always watch for the lock sign and if I don't see one, I do not leave personal information at all, and definitely not credit card information. I think all reputable businesses will have the lock sign, and we should beware of any sites that do not provide that.
