That you get your ears professionally cleaned by the ear doctor. How many of you knew this? Did you also know that they (the ear doctors) advise against q-tips? Only because a lot of people use them improperly and in fact end up PUSHING the wax against the eardrum itself, and may cause discomfort, hearing issues, and possibly damage to the eardrum itself. Who else knew this? Or is this all news to you?

I did not know this no, but I am thinking that my ears are in need of a good cleaning because it is hurting when I yawn and I am really scared of getting an ear infection because I had one once and it really hurt!! I do use tips, not as much as I used to but I do use them...

Oh, yeah I would get that checked out too, it could also be because of possible pressure of your ears trying to pop, but can't because maybe the wax is pushing up against it. OR lockjaw. I wish you good luck! Thanks for responding!

LOL!! It is a great way to make the ENT guys rich. Nopes, I never go to the ENT to get my ears cleaned. Good old coconut oil and a hair pin does the trick. Once a month, I oil my ears and use a pin to clean my ears. :) Ears are in perfect working order. Cheers and happy Mylotting

Yup...I guess you could call it a bobby pin..a longish, thin thingie to keep your hair in place. But don't tell any ENT guy this...they will have a heart attack and swear that my ears are done for!! LOL!! Cheers!!

yeah but....4 years in between shouldn't be giving them too much money hehe. And we have free health care in Canada, so no worries for us. And what kind of hair pin? like a bobby pin? I never heard of that method. Thanks for responding!

I have heard about Q-tips being bad for you if used improperly. I believe my boyfriend does this, but he disagrees. With that being said, I have never heard about getting your ears cleaned, especially not every 4 years?! I will need to do some research on that, because if what you say is true, I am way past due!

hehe, yeah, it's not common knowledge unfortunately, I only found out about the 4 year thing from a pamphlet I was reading one day while in the waiting room. Thanks for responding!

I knew about the Qtips but not the every 4 yrs cleaning..seems like something worth while since unless you do it with ear cleaners at home, it will build up and then maybe the cause of deafness..

ya we should have to check our ears from a professional doctor as lot of wax gathers inside our ears and may cause some hearing problems

I heard of that, my husband will not use q-tips, he told me they are not good, I use them and I do not have any problems with my ears. My thoughts on this issue, would be use your judgement, in using q-tips
• Canada
21 Jan 09
Indeed, thanks for adding that, judgment and caution, because I'm not saying q-tips are bad and everyone should stop using them, just to be careful. Thanks for responding!

Yes, it's new to me about having the ears generally checked up every 4 years. What is the consequence of not doing it? To be honest, I have never had it checked. I've been through this life over fifty years.

Not doing so cause result in having wax build-up, which if left alone, will harden, and deter your hearing. And if you try cleaning your ears with a q-tip, after the wax is beyond hardened in your canal, you could possibly cause damage by accidentally pushing it in deeper, it could rupture your eardrum, to name a few things. Thanks for responding!

I didn't know about the cleaning, but i know you are not supposed to use q-tips ever. . not only the pushing the wax down to the eardrum, but you can rupture the eardrum with the qtip.

News to me. I am one of those people who use Q-tips all the time. I cannot stand going more than 12 hours without cleaning my ears. They just feel weird if I don't.
• Canada
21 Jan 09
I'm the same way too. Even though I know this, I still wipe my ears with the good old q-tip. BUT, I have changed my ways in the method, I point the qtip up going in, and then do a swirl, and point down while taking it back out. I found that this gets the wax out without compacting it anywheres. Thanks for responding!

I had heard about the Q Tip thing but not that you should have your ears professionally cleaned. I am sceptical frankly. What is the advantage (apart from clean ears). The ear is designed to be self cleaning, that's the purpose of wax. Sometimes there is a build up and it sticks in the ear canal, then it requires medical intervention to remove it. But otherwise this sounds like an income raising ploy by ear doctors.
• Canada
21 Jan 09
Yes, a VERY SLOW income raising plot he he. But just like the yearly physical, it's to our benefit, because there are some small hard kernels of wax that are just DISGUSTING to see let me tell you! But these can also puncture the eardrum, by accident of course, lets says by cleaning your ears with said q-tip. But not just any doctor I think, it has to be the ear specialist, they have the special tools and everything for it. Thanks for responding!

Our doctor always says 'never put anything smaller than your elbow into your ear'. I know it's bad to use cotton buds (q-tips) ... but they are such FUN! Who can resist using them?
• Canada
21 Jan 09
LOL smaller than your elbow. That's cute! and yes, q-tips are fun! Even for my cat! He likes to dig them out of the garbage can in the bathroom, and plays with them on my bed, and sometimes gets them under the blankets...does Mommy like it? No....no I do not....lol Thanks for responding!

I never got mine clean until about two years ago, my hearing was getting so bad I went to the Doctor and she found a lot of wax so I went in for cleaning, now I ask each time I see the Doctor just to keep up with it.
