Heads Up On Another Phone Scam

Gee these people sure can think of different ways to scam us. This scam might be more tempting for many people who are heavily in debt due to credit cards. Sometimes rather than resort to filing bankruptcy, many people will turn to a debt consolidation type organization to manage all their debts..this allows a person to pay a smaller amount for all those debts. Now many of these companies are legit..BUT ..as you can guess some aren't...and here is just one of those that isn't For sometime I kept getting a phone call from a place called Debt America...Now unless it's one of my friends calling I hardly pick up the phone and allow my answering machine pick up the message. And as you can guess I ignore calls from telemarketers and so forth. Well tonight I got another call from this place...and no I didn't pick up..but this time I took down the exact words of the message and made particular note of the phone number that one is supposed to call back..Here is the message that was left on my phone: "Hello. This is John Evans calling from Debt America. And this is my final attempt to reach you about assisting you in eliminating your credit card debt. Through our approved bailout program that just went into effect. Please call me back at 1-800-461-7054 so we can discuss how this program can assist you through these tough economic times, as this program will expire. Call me at 1-800-461-7054. Thanks." Okay the Sherlock Holmes in me decided to look up the number. Oh, and if you get messages from anyone you don't know..TAKE AND WRITE DOWN THE PHONE NUMBER...then type in that number in a search like google...no doubt you'll come up either with a real legit place but even then it could be a scammers place..or you'll come up with a listing of others who have complained about the very same number... One such place that is good to find out the legitimacy of a phone number is this website http://800notes.com/ (Warning This is NOT a Referral link but a link to this website to find out phone numbers and if they are scammers} In my particular case with that phone number I came up with a whole page of complainers about this phone number http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-800-461-7054 as one person posts there, this is probably a place to scam people in telling them their credit card numbers So just beware of this kind of thing. As I said many people might be desperate to settle debts and might fall for this crap. In fact, for now on, since I do get a lot of wacky messages I plan to look up the phone numbers of them all whenever I get calls from now on

Thanks for the heads up. I'm starting to get irritated with the legit places too. Got a phone call entering us in a sweepstakes. I just kept saying oh. Then they offered us tons of magazine specials. I told them I didn't want ANY magazines. They said sorry and hung up. But since then, I've had tons of magazine invoices wanting me to pay my subscription fees since I ordered the magazine. Such a headache! The especially irritating one are those who are so insistent on us getting further warranty on our cars. The warranty is about to run out. ??? Our newest car is a 1999 model. I'm pretty sure that warranty ran out a loooong time ago. Silly people.

Isn't it infuriating? Do your homework, people! Stop getting me out of bed for a stupid warranty I don't need!

I think for now on anytime I get a phone call from some telemarketer or whatever, I'll check the phone number on that site and see if it's a scam

It's good of you to let the people know about these scams. I have heard from a finacial person that many if not most of these places just take your money and you are on the losing end when using one. Also you can do the things yourself that they claim to do. Just call the credit card companies and they will lower if not suspend your interest rate and make automatic withdrawals from your bank up to a year depending on the company so that you are not late every month. Also as the interest rate is dropped drastically or cut out your money goes on principle.

Oh yeah... "bailout program"? "tough economic times"? "this program will expire"? If those key phrases don't clue people in, maybe nothing will. Unfortunately, there's always someone trying to cash in on others' gullibility and real need. Keep fighting the good fight.

I hate people who think they can scam us without any consequences! I always call the police when I have experiences like this, as I don't think it's fair to ignore the problem and allow other people to be harmed by it in the future. You will save a lot of people from these scams if you report them to the police.

Great tips! I always check the phone number online. Here is another good website you should try: http://whocalled.us/ I like it b/c the URL is simple to remember :) I always go there and report telemarketer calls so I can help the cause and help other people who may get the same call. The number one lesson from your post is DON'T Answer! I'm surprised they left you a message. Most telemarketers don't. There have been times where I got calls from the same number for MONTHS and never got a message, never answered. Some people said "aren't you worried it might be important??" and I said "if it's important, they would leave a message!"

Thanks for that link. I get a lot of hangups and imagine its from telemarketers who are tying to call me but when they just get a message from my machine hang up...guess they want a "live" person to speak to.

It's comforting to know, pyewacket, that someone is on the alert for these low-life types. I confess that I was recently scammed(on a different matter), and I am still kicking myself!I should have known better, but my only excuse is that my mind sometimes wanders. It has caused me the loss of money that I did not have to spare, along with other issues. Now my daughter tells me that I should cancel my card. I really hate to do that. So, all of you should be really careful out there.

I think I got called by them. I answered and was told they got my name from Experion which is a credit rating outfit. I thought those things were private. They knew my first and last names. They asked if I wanted relief from credit card debt. I said I didn't have any (which they should have known if they got my name from Experion). They offered relief from medical bills; I said I didn't have any. The guy said "then you must be living high on the hog." I told them to take my number off their list and not call it again; before I was finished speaking, he hung up. Later, I got another call from another guy from there. I said you guys already called me; I told you to take my number off your list. He hung up, too.

I do not pick up phone calls from anyone whom I do not know or whom I am not expecting a call. I will allow them to leave a message and then I will call them back if I know them or it is something that I have requested some information. The rest, I ignore and most do not even leave messages. I am a private number and on the do not call list, so I rarely get such calls. I never give out my home or cell phone number on line. If they want a number, I give them my old one (which is still not in use, I check regularly), as I do not want it getting out. Only people I know well have either of my phone numbers. Thanks so much for the information. It is good to pass it onto others.

I never pick up calls from people/places I don't know either. Do you get those hang-ups too? Like my message will go on for a bit and whoever it is on the other end winds up hanging up..suspect they're a bunch of telemarketer types as well

In the rare moment that I have accidentally picked up a call from a telemarketer, I just leave the phone on, put it down on the counter, and walk away. When I am sure that they are gone, I hang it up. I imagine they are talking to no one until they hear nothing. I figure it costs the company money for each moment they are on an open call and will get the drift to remove me. Yes, I have gotten those hang up messages, too. They want a live person.

I really appreciate this information. Thank you for taking the time to write all this out. Anymore it is hard to know who's who and what is what. I don't go much for doing this kind or similar business online just because you don't know. The BBB can help too.

Hey Pye! I get calls from that place and Dept. Solutions all the time! I just ignore them! They are really obnoxious! I don't appreciate that they call me and continue to keep calling over and over again! And they leave messages like what you said! I get alot of those kinds of calls! And I get the calls from the collections agency that really does have my credit card debt too! That one is really annoying! They call early in the morning and up until 10:00 at night and call even on Sunday all day! This has been going on for about 4 years and I told them that I'm disabled and on Public Assistance! They are not supposed to call me right now, but that doesn't stop them! They want their money! Of course, I don't blame them because I owe them alot of money! But,it's their fault for giving me such a large credit line! That made them really mad when I told them that!

I too screen my calls for this reason. Now a days there are just too many people out there trying to make a fast dollar by getting you to give them you information. I never trust companies like this, I mean how many people do you know call around looking for someone to help out of debt? I think that you were right not to trust them and I applaude you. I would also like to thank you for starting this discussion and starting to raise awreness on scams like this. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the information... but it really just boils down to "street smarts" to not fall for scams nowadays, especially with the number of phishing schemes online, the number of ways spyware can make it onto your computer (100% user error, educated or not), and these telephone scams. What I don't understand is how you were "targeted" for this scam... do people actually snag enough victims to cover the costs of having an auto-dialer make thousands of calls to a range of telephone numbers?
@pyewacket (43903)

It must be some kind of "auto" dialer thing. I get calls from scammers claiming they can help me with my mortgage payments...like Huh?--I live in an apartment not a home
