A non smoking room with smokers in it.

I am staying at this motel, and we are on the non smoking section part. Well, our next door neighbors were smoking. They were smoking so bad that the smoke was in entering in our room. So, my mate came back from work and he smelled the smoke. So, he went up to the front office and he told the receptionsist about it, and she told him that she did not want to make a scene by calling the police and having them come out.. My mate did not like her response. The people next door was talking very loudly and it was very strong smoke coming from their room to our room. Do, you think that management should enforce this rule to renters, that if they occupy a non smoking room and that if they are smokers, they should instead choose a smoking room. I wonder if the receptionist whom gave them that room asked them if they wanted non smoking or smoking. That way if they were smokers they could have had a smoking room. And if they were not, it would be their choice to choose if they wanted to be in a smoking or non smoking room or not. But, there are non smoking signs on the front door specifying that the room they were checking into is a non smoking room. I wonder if the renters paid that any attenetion. And if the housekeeping noticed the smell, then they should do their job and repoort this matter to management ASAP. Although, the room we was in has an smoke alarm in it, it still does not give others whom are smokers the right to smoke in an non smoking room.

Smoking rooms cost a lot more then the non-smoking rooms so a lot of times smokers will ask for a non-smoking room. That does not give them the right to smoke in those rooms though. If you complained or anyone else complained, the managers should have switched their room or asked them to leave.

This happened to us, too, and luckily we were staying at a place that had no problem enforcing the rule. We called the front desk, and they came right down and took care of the problem. The people weren't going to cause a scene because they needed to stay there just as badly as we did. What bothered my fiance the most was that he's a smoker and had no problem going outside - so he wanted to make sure the rules were followed the same way he had to follow them. It's only fair, right?

Exactly, the renters should have stayed outside of their room door and smoked. The manager nor receptionsist should never allow them to smoke in an non smoking room. They should not be scared to confront them whether they are new and paying clients. If we had to smoke, and we were caught, trust me, we would never get away with it, like they did!

Yes they should have enforced it and I think I would have looked for a 1-800 number to call to file a complaint or insisted on talking to the manager. That receptionist isn't doing her job and they need to hire someone who will. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

if they're really bad, they'll get billed, believe me. the hotels i worked at bill for cleaning costs because they have to change out everything and put an ozone generator/smoke eater in the room which knocks it out for up to a day. that's one reason most places ask for credit cards now.

Hi cream! I guess, the receptionist didn't inform them that there are certain rules that must be followed. And even if she neglected to bring the matter to the renters in the first place, she should do something about it in respect to the other renters. And I do think that the renters thought that even if there is a sign that says it is a non smoking area, maybe they think that they can get away with it since the management is not enforcing the rules strictly. I do think that the responsiblity of talking to the renters should be on the shoulders of the management and you should insist that they do since you are also paying customers. Take care and have a great day! lovelots..faith

Smoking rooms are usually away from the other rooms. I would have complained because a non smoking room should stay that way.

You were able to smell it? That's insane! They must of been smoking out the ying-yang... I think the management should of done something, but if they choose not to, there really isn't much you can do. But, I wouldn't go back to this motel & if I was you, I would make sure they know your not happy & let them know, they lost your business..

Well, I do understand your plight. It was really irresponsible of those people who did not consider the no smoking policy of the of the motel. But what is also discouraging is the personnel of the motel. They should have approached those who are smoking in the room and enforce their policy.

I don't think some motels care who they rent their rooms to. I know we stayed at one, where we requested a non-smoking room, and as soon as we walked in the room all we could smell was smoke, and it was supposed to be a non smoker room, we went to walmart and bought a air freshener while we were there...lol.

I am a smoker, but I think management should have enforced the non smoking policy. Whenever I check into a hotel, and I am not asked whether I want a smoking or non smoking, I will conform to the room itself. If there are ashtrays, I assume it is for smokers, if there is no ashtrays, I will smoke in a designated area or go outside. I do not believe in passing my habit on to others. That was really room of the neighbors to smoke, if in fact they knew it was a non smoking room. If I were you , I would write a letter to management and let them know how the front desk handled the situation. You have your rights and they were violated.

I think the receptionist was a coward and not doing her job. When they implement rules they should be responsible enough to enforce them too. If not, what would be the point of making rules and laws and such? She was also showing you great disrespect as well. I'm sorry that you got stuck in such a situation. The people who are next door to you don't sound like they are very mature people and don't have any consideration for others. Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

If I were in your place, i'd call the attention of the front desk officer or manager to transfer us to a new room.. i mean, you've paid for a non-smoking room to rest.. it's the management's responsibility to make sure that their clients are happy and comfortable during their stay..

Hello my friend cream97 Ji, I think, I would prefer to live in a motel, where all rooms are with non-smoking facilities and there is no crib. Smoke is un-controble , it is free to travel in direction of wind. In case it is not allowed outside of 'Smoking rooms', it will become health hazrdous to smokers . Receiptionist could maximum request to smokers to be in limit , and what about shouting etc. I think, smoking was lesser, you could tolerate than their talking, it must have disturbed you both and made difference to highlight smoking also. As such, i will simply walk away from them. may god bless you and have a great time.

It is awful the way the front desk person treated your husband and I would report this person to management. You got a non-smoking room for a reason. The neighbors smoke and they are on a non smoking floor. The least they could have and should have done was to move the others to another room. The hotels will give smokers a non-smoking room if they don't have a smoking one available. In this case that must be what they did. They should have moved them to another room.

I do not understand why they even have smoking rooms in motels. I understand that some people do like to smoke, but it should never effect someone else, such as a person who doesn't even like the smell. Obviously you did what you could to avoid being around smokers while you were staying at the motel. If the receptionist was not willing to do anything about it, then I am sure that she must have made a mistake and didn't want to take the fall for it. If she made a mistake, the people in the room would have told the authorities that she did not tell them it was a non-smoking room and then she would have gotten in trouble. She was probably saving her own skin, which was unprofessional.

Hi cream97, That is just bad manners on their path and the resceptionist is stupid, well as long as they get the money they don't really care. When my friend and I went on a few days break, the hotels now don't allow smoking in side the hotels and you can't smoke in your rooms either, otherwise the hotel would get close down. Hugs. Tamara

Whatever motel you are staying in, make sure you don't go back to that one in the future since the receptionist is unsure what to do with their own company policy, at least you know that this motel does not care about non smoker right to stay in a smoke free room now, stay out of it in your travel, friend!

Hi cream97, That's bad customer service in that motel, if you were in a non smoking and so were your neighbours then the management should of tackled it, I'd kick up a fuss and find the hotel on the net and see if you can't write a review about your experience with them, name and shame them after all they showed you no consideration so why show them any.

If there is a city ordinance, then i would call the police myself. I am a smoker, but i try to respect other people also. I always ask for a smoking room. This is just rude and impolite. I would also report it to management, the clerk may not have done so.
