Well we have the daily power cut of more than 12 hours these days. This is really making our life very much difficult nowadays. Its hard to spend the time without electricity. Not to describe much there are thousands of problems... However the power cut is not done in the developed countries. The power cut due to damage in these countries even for some minutes could be the world news, but we are having light for only 8 hours a day nowadays. Its really difficult. I wish this don't happen in your nation. But I want to ask you, how would you spend your time in these case. I appreciate your opinions? About me, I listen to the music, sing along, or do some creative works and sometimes join friends. What about you?

It would be difficult to only have electricity for 8 hours a day because of refrigeration and heat fans, which most of us have come to rely upon in the US. I'm sure there would be some major lifestyle changes, and some inventions made to replace the power. More wind and solar power at the home level would be used, as well as more "backward" technology like wood stoves and lamps or candles for light. For myself, I would have a problem, since my house is not convenient for either a wood stove or solar panels. Other than that, we'd adjust. I don't use electricity that much except for the computer and I have a laptop with a battery I could charge when the power was on. Interesting question!

For light, we are using battery and CFL bulbs nowadays. It gives sufficient light. We are cooking using gas. Yes we use candles too. Construction of solar energy here is expensive and cannot be efficient here. We have adjusted but life is dry without TV, computers and other equipments.

I understand. Many people are dependent on TV, radio, computers and so on, for entertainment as well as information. I'm old enough to remember when we didn't have computers (and even TVs). We made our own music, read books, played board and card games and so on. I hope things get better for you or that you can adjust and not miss electricity so much when you don't have it.

When we have power outages we play games as a family. I really appreciate the time we get. It is so easy to get caught up in life. Power outages force us to use our creativity instead of sitting in front of the tv wasting our time.

You are right, this leads us to some creative works. Well I do compositions too. And because of this outage problem, I have get more into this. But still there are very very much more time than this which are very difficult to spend. Playing games with my family never happen to me, but I keep singing with my brother and sometimes my family becomes the listeners.

It would be a very quiet time and I would be happy. No distractions and it would be a great family time. Time to talk to each other in the family. If I was alone, I would be reading something to raise my knowledge. I would also consider spending the time in prayer.

Two months before, we use to have about 6 hours power cut in a week. It was done 2 hrs in a day in three days. At that time, I enjoyed the powercut. Because it was the nice reason for not studying and instead hanging out, roam or enjoy with friends. Yes its a good time to hang out with family too. But look, we are having more than 12 hours power cut each day. Now I am tired of hanging out. I don't like to hangout in these time now. Rather this is making me too lazy. Because I sleep when I have nothing to do. And when there is light, even in the late night, I use the computer because I am sick of it. My pc is on, everytime there is light.

I don't understand why they have to cut the electricity in your country. Do they do that during the day time? Must be pretty uncomfortable if its a tropical country like ours, it would be really hot..., if its at night, then it would be hard to sleep. Anyways, if ever there would be no electricity, I would probably spend time reading books, doing cross-stitch, working out, swimming, learning how to do stuffs like maybe dancing or acting, jamming with friends would also be nice. There is actually a lot of stuffs that can be done, its just that people nowadays are so used to computers and TVs that they think they can no longer survive without them.

The reason for power cut is that, the generation of the electricity in the current rate cannot meet the requirement of the city. The electricity depends upon water source in our nation, and due to the lack of rain we are facing the problem. Yes there are lot of things that can be done, but just wanted to get opinions what others would do. Because of this, jamming with friends or singing alone has been my habit...

It would be very hard. I would probably buy a new lap top so I could surf a few hours a day during the power cuts. We have rechargeable emergency lights in most homes here. They stay plugged in and only come on in the event of a power failure. I would buy a few more of those. One for each room. I don't watch TV, so that wouldn't bother me. But for those that do there are small battery operated TV's available. We had a power failure last week due to a huge storm. The lights were out for about 6 hours. It was rough on everyone. People used tea candles for light, even in public places. Unfortunately I had to go out during the storm. It was voting day and I had 2 pet sits to do.

Yes its hard for sure. But we are getting habituated with this. There is no other way. I wish I could buy a laptop. But I am not able to buy it for now because I am unemployed yet and dependent of my family. Even the laptops wouldn't be able to bear the power upto 12 hours but yes it can be helpful for few hours. For the light, we have batteries and we use CFL tubelights, that are enough for us. At least we have one in each of our room nowadays. The only problem here too is that we don't get enough time to charge the batteries. However, we use this only in the evening and night time, so they are almost enough. I too don't have problem about TV, because I don't watch it more. But the greatest problem in the computer. I miss my computer more in these hours.

that would be very difficult but i guess, if i'm not at work during the power cut time and since i'm not that outgoing person, i think i'll just sleep or charge up my PSP during the power is up so that i can just play PSP during power is out.

we are so electricity hungry these days and i can totally see this happening during the summer. usually because of the high demand for air conditioning, we often have brownouts in the province of ontario (canada) and 6 years ago had no power for 2 days. i usually read and do a lot of crafting most of the time so i am not sure that i would miss the electricity unless it was really hot or really cold.

Hmm...really it is very difficult to spend 12 hours without power. Before my marriage i was with my parents in a village. We had daily power cut there.I was listening to music, reading books or going to shop to help my dad in his business. Now am in a big city ,dont have daily power cut .Even if power goes we have back up here.So now i dont have that problem :)...

I guess it would depend on what time of day the power is out. If it's during the night, then I'd just use that time to sleep when you really should be sleeping. However, if it were during the day, I'd read books, maybe increase my exercise, spend more time with my children, etc. There are many things I could probably do if there was no power.

I live in the same country as you are living but luckily we don't have get power cuts for more than 2 hours a day. This is good isn't it? We spent our time by talking to each other and listening to mobile radio. I think power cut is necessary because then only we get a chance to talk to our family member otherwise everyone is busy with TV chanel and reality shows.

At one point in my life I lived in a house that had no electric or running water and we had a wood burning stove for heat in the winter. Out of necessity I made myself a sort of cook tent outside and did all my cooking over an open fire. All water had to be hauled from the spring in plastic jugs. Since the spring was down hill from where the house was it was a pain in the butt to haul the water uphill. In the summer I carried 4 gallon jugs in each hand and in the winter I used a sled. Bathing and laundry was a real pain because it meant hauling water up the hill then heating it over the fire. Even with having to haul the water and heat it we bathed on a daily basis. I also kept the fire going 24 hours a day. I learned to bank the ashes before bed so all I had to do was add some small pieces of wood in the morning. I grew all my own vegies and even canned them over the open fire for the next winter. I know I spent a lot of time hauling water because there are so many things that we use water for. To keep our food cold in the summer we immersed it in leak proof containers in the spring. During the winter we had a room that we did not heat and it would get so cold in there it was like having a walk in refrigerator. I think most of us would adjust as necessary to whatever conditions we need to. Remember at one time there were no modern conveniences and people still survived.

Very nicely dictated thankyou! Yes, I agree with you! At one time there were no modern conveniences and people still survived. It was the past. We have already the habit of living with such modern conveniences. We didn't have this problem two months before. In our country, electricity generation is through hydro power. But we are having very less rain nowadays which is making difficult to generate electricity. In these seasons we have yearly high power cut, this time it is the worst. Never happened before. But you are right, we learn to habituate, but it takes time.
