if you are being sponsored to go travelling alone to an interesting but unfamiliar place, who will you choose if you are given an option to bring along a helper? 1) a tour guide - to help you to understand the place better 2) a bodyguard - to protect you from any danger you can only select one helper, have your pick & tell the reason!

I would definitely go for a guide because what will I do of a bodyguard if I dont understand the local language !! I wont be able to go to any place, will have to just sit around wondering where I am with the bodyguard near me. Also, since the place is unfamiliar I would need assistance for every activity-food shelter, enjoyment otherwise the whole travel would go in vain

it is true that it will be a tour guide which will be needed if one is going to have a vacation at a friendly place. but, when it is in a place which you do not have any idea as to what's it going to be, it might be a well and able bodied body guard that one will be needing. it really depends upon the circumstances then. there is a need to consider things that will surround the vacation activity before deciding on which is the best one to tag along for the entirety of the activity.

both of you are right & have strong points supporting your choice made. it really depends on how we think about the place we are going.

I'd pick the tour guide. He/she should be able to tell me the places to avoid and points of interest. Plus, he/she should be able to speak the language.

I'd like to think that the tour guide has some sort of relationship with the locals and could persuade them that tourism brings in a lot of money so it's best to make sure tourist are safe.

i afraid that the locals couldn't see the true benefits for them to have people visiting (or intruding) their place, or maybe money is not important for them... LOL!

good, but he wouldn't risk his life to protect you in time of danger... don't you think it would be risky?

definitely, i will need a bodyguard who will protect me against all harm and he must be willing to do everything for me, too, to keep me comfortable during the duration of the vacation. anyway, i am not really that adventurous. most probably, i will turn down the offer. i do not like at all the idea of the possibility that the vacation may turn out to be a difficult one to go through. the place may not be familiar to me, but i must be sure that it is a safe place to go to and there will be not much hassles there. if it is otherwise, it will be a no-no for me. i have to protect my life so i can still be around longer for the sake of the ones i love and hold dear.

both of you really have the idea before making your decision on who to choose. since it is depending on how you think about the place, i would say that trinidadvelasco is thinking about going africa while abhi_dude is thinking about going paris!:)

I agree that it depends upon the circumstances and one needs to take all things into consideration before making the decision. what sort of place is it .. if its jungles of Africa where you might be attacked by Tribal people then a bodyguard will do, if it is Paris than you would go for a guide

Hi victorywp! I think that I will take a bodyguard with me. Although the place is unfamiliar to both of us, still I can buy maps and can ask around if we think we are getting lost. What matters to me is that my bodyguard can protect me from harm and danger. Take care and have a great day! lovelots..faith

How I wish I could bring my husband with me but since that is not in the option so I should just pick one from what you have given. Well for me I would choose a tour guide because in the first place I want to learn. Since I have been sponsored then it is my chance to get information on the place I am going to. Another reason is that I think I could ask more questions and get more answers from a tour guide than from a body guard because tour guide knows more about the place. That is why that is there job. I don't think I need a body guard because I am just a common person with no wealth or whatsoever. I think in case a danger will come then I will face it and my tour guide will face it to. We will both depend ourselves when the situation calls for it. A tour guide will think of the best ways to help himself and I will do the same. We may not be helping each other but at least we are having the same goal: to depend ourselves and stay alive! A tour guide can turn out to be a body guard in an instant because of the rise in adrenaline in a dangerous situation but a body guard will always be a body guard who might just know few about the place since he works only to protect the area but not to educate the tourist. At least in case anything wrong happens to me, I have learned til the last minute of my breath!

that's some strong points to defend why you are choosing a tour guide! it's really nice to read responses from all point of views. thanks!

My first instinct is to say I would bring a bodyguard, because I would want to explore and see things at my own pace, but in the event that something was dangerous, I would have my bodyguard there to defend me. If I brought a tour guide, I might see the popular things, but I wouldn't get to explore as much, and if there was an issue, I wouldn't have someone there to protect me!

I would choose a tour guide. I'm not someone who's going to attract attention (negative attention) so I wouldn't be needing a bodyguard. Unless of course I'm hypothetically speaking 'famous', plus only if he knows the place well. As for the tour guide, he/she'd be a better person since he/she knows the place well. But if it's a sponsored travel for pleasure, I'd rather get lost with my partner (provided that the sponsored tour also gives us a lot of allowances so we could truly enjoy being lost). hHahaha. Life is an adventure!

I would prefer to bring a body guard because my safety should come first. Anyway, if I don't the place, then it would be an adventrure for me and it will definitely be more fun to go to an unfamiliar place.

Well, I would definitely pick the tour guide. Considering that I am unfamiliar with the place, the tour guide would be very helpful. I can tend to myself, so there is no need for a helper. I would not be needing a bodyguard since I have no enemies and of course the tour guide will surely know which places are safe for travel considering that he or she is a tour guide...

that's a good choice. yes, a tour guide surely knows which places are safe but the only disadvantage is that the tour guide would not risk his life to save you if you really fall into trouble or danger.:)

Hi there! I will choose tour guide, I'm not good in remembering streets or places nor reading road map, so I guess I have a better chance of getting lost than getting hurt or rob.

I will probably choose a tour guide to go along with me, first, tour guide is supposed to be familiar with the place so in case I encounter some accident, the tour guide will know where to go and report to, the body guard nmight not know. Second, I could have more fun having the tour guide's references. That's what I think. :-)

I guess I'd choose number 1... My trip would be a total waste if I couldn't enjoy and get to know about the place... (well if it's a dangerous place, it would also be a waste if I'd die there LOL) but if I am together with a person who knows the place well, I'm sure well have lots of fun.. haaha

The body guard is the one i will chose to help me in case of trouble. Since you can also ask him about the place you are touring, then a body guard will help. I don't know about other MyLotters might say, but if you are to travel to a place unfamiliar, don't you think you need protection better than an intellectual tour guide. Well anyway this is a scenario wherein we are only given two options to choose from. What else to say! hmmmmmm!

the tour guide knows everything you need to know about the place (but wouldn't risk his life to protect you) whereas the bodyguard knows nothing about the place (but would risk his life to protect you).:) so it depends on whether you want to get a nice trip or a safe trip?:)

I usually go traveling with my toddler son. If I was going on the sort of trip that you describe I would choose to go with a tour guide. He or she would be a knowledgeable person and be fluent in the local language. I would do exciting activities like explore historical ruins and go for interesting walks. I would love to go snorkeling and it would be superb to have a companion. I would not need a body guard because I am just an ordinary person.

Of course, I will do much interested in selecting for a tour guide as my affinity helper. Because normally, a tour guide much well equipped with knowledge about the location, facilities, amenities, emergency aid and the security level. Matter of fact, "encroaching" new area I have to supply myself with GPS device unit. GPS device is an extra tools for me in getting any third party emergency help. Before I go to that unfamiliar place, I've to stored all the relevant data to that unfamiliar place and tested its functionality to unsure it is in an excellent working order, imperatively with the safety authority party assigned to render their emergency aid if something bad things happen to me during my period of journey.

I have pondered and decided I would choose a bodyguard because I figured that with a good map I would probably manage to find my way around; the only concern would be safety so a nice strong bodyguard would be very helpful indeed!

l would choose to go with a tour guide to go to an interesting and unfamiliar place, because he she can help you to understand the history of the place better. he also explains to you the cultures norms of the place, why people in that place do things the way they do them. When you go to unfamiliar place you may need to understand the people, their behaviors and beliefs. A tour guide is the only person who can help you to know all this. A tour guide's main purpose is to generally is to show the visitor how, what, when and why things happen or are done. The same information you may find in a tour brochure. Secondly he may work as an escort or a body guard indirectly. So l will choose a tour guide for their extensive experience and knowledge/skills in their work.

great details of the work of a tour guide. as an escort, yes, but not a bodyguard because i don't think a tour guide will risk his life for you.
