Last night I was at the grocery store and decided to buy Hubby a chicken dinner from the deli. While I was being waited on I noticed a flyer up in the deli window “Friday Frog Legs…$6.99 lb.”. I had to ask so I asked the clerk if they really sold frog legs and were there really that many ppl that bought them. She said they sold out every Friday. She said they started cooking them up early in the morning and no matter how fast they kept them coming there was always a long line…and only for the frog legs. She said some ppl bought 5 or 10 lbs. of them…at $6.99 lb. I was really surprised that they are that popular. She said the store thought about doing more then one day a week of them but they couldn’t keep up with the high demand for them. Personally, I’d never eat a frog leg b/c I couldn’t get past the image of the poor little frogs with their little legs hacked off…maybe I ought to just become a vegetarian b/c this has me thinking of the poor cows, chickens and piggies that end up on the plate. Were you ever surprised at something being so popular? Would you eat frog legs? Could you become a vegetarian and if you are one, do you ever miss meat? Also if you are one, what made you become one? I've had frog legs once when I was a kid but don't remember how they tasted. That is one luxury I can't afford along with lobster.

I always think that it is so weird to see that frog legs for sale. I guess it should not be a weird thing but it is. I have tried them and they taste like dried up chicken. I could not enjoy it since the picture of the frog was on my mind. My Grandma loved them they were her all time favorite. I have also considered becoming a vegetarian, but not all vegan, and not all the time. Meat has been starting to gross me out thow. The other night I was sure I smelled rotten meat and it was fresh and no one else smelled it just me. Thats not the first time thats happend. I actually made a meatless dinner last night.

Yes I do like frog legs. It has been a few years since I have had any but when I was younger I went out frog gigging. I did find them on a menu once at a restaurant here in Florida but when we went back they had been taken off. The waiter said the demand for them exceded the expectations of the owner so he had to remove them from the menu. The demand was much more than they could buy.

My mom had frog legs at a restaurant when she was a teenager on vacation with her family. She said they truly tasted like chicken, but they smelled so bad she didn't want to finish them. Yes, I would try them, but mostly because I'll try almost anything once. I've never been in a store that sold them though.

LOLOL I have to laugh when I read this. I am like you, I just couldn't do it. Couldn't get the image out of my mind. I do, however, have friends and relatives who have and do eat frog's legs and really like them. I just can't imagine it myself. Sort of like Rocky Mountain Oysters!!!???

Here is the part that is throwing me for a loop. I was under the impression that you could not sell 'wild game' for want of a better word, in stores. For example, I happen to love deer meat, elk meat, quail...etc. But I cant just mosey on down to the local store and bring some home. We have a neighbor who raises elk, yeah, but we have to wait until hunting season for those types of things. I dont think I could ever eat frog legs, I have seen some of the ponds where bullfrogs live, yucky! I really dont think I could ever become a vegetarian, though I try to make something meatless at least once a week...trying to be healthy. My mom is a vegetarian, but I dont think she does it right, she does not look healthy!

I was a vegetarian once. Though, I still ate eggs, dairy products and chicken and fish. It was only red meat i cut out from my diet. My reasons were because my body at the time had a low tolerance of animal fats, particularly those that came from meat. After a few years, I was able to go back to a full diet, and very rarely have problems now. Many people that get squeamish over frogs legs do so because it is new and unfamiliar to them. Me, well, I'd try them. I make a point of at least trying new foods before criticising them. Just think, if we didn't control animal populations by eating them, then our world wouldn't survive, not even our plants.

Hi Twoey, that is one thing if faced with I would try, but if I didn't like them then would never touch them again, though like you for me it is hard to get past the fact the legs were once on a frog, and I love my frogs....littleowl

I know a lot of people who eat them. They claim it tastes like chicken, but less greasy. I cannot stomach the idea as I am terrified of frogs! It is pretty nasty, but then again there are a lot of nasty items people eat!

I have never eaten nor would I eat frog legs. There used to be a very popular roadside restaurant where I live that sold frog legs. Just like you said, people ordered them like they were ordering french fries. Of course everyone says they taste like chicken. My thing is, if it tastes like chicken, then why not order chicken. I could easily become a vegetarian, I can really do without meat. Actually, I do not eat pork or beef, just chicken and seafood. My husband is a meat eater, he thinks a meal is not a meal without it.

{{Twoey}}} aaahhhh Frog legs, OMG!! LOVE THEM!!! I would never buy them from a deli, or grocery store though; No wonder so many people don't like them; But take it from this country woman, they are in fact very very good; That is if you go and get them yourself, clean them and then fry them up; Those that are raised and sold to restaurants ( to me) are very tough it takes a long time for a frog to mature in size to become big enough to kill to eat; So like many other things that are raised, processed and so on are raised at a high rate of pace to keep up with the demands; Frogs are quite scarce actually and have been for many many years they are around here where I live anyway, like most things there is a season to hunt them and anybody that's got a body of water on their property and the frogs gather there then some other scumbag is going to sneak in on your property and gig them, take them and then you the property owner have none for yourself; well I could go on and on about that part; But "fresh frogs" caught, cleaned and fried up ( just like a chicken) are the absolute best tasting; They also make excellent gravy, you know milk gravy just like you'd make when after frying up your chicken. But the sad thing about frog legs is, most people only eat the legs, they are missing out on the best part of the frog and that is the back, yes the back has the best tasting, meat there; now not to gross anyone out that might read this is well when you dress the frog ( clean it) you of course kill it first, chop off its little feet/ ( sorry guys/gals) gut it, skin it and the whole frog is now ready to be washed out throughly, we do cut the legs off separately the back does take a few minutes extra when frying but again the meat there is sooooo good; but its wasted by so many people; such a waste!! You can bet no restaurant or deli place would be selling that , I guess its just a country thing growing up and the way my DAd was raised, NOTHING WAS WASTED (g)! But for my family, Fresh frog is way way way better than chicken anyday and I'm an avid chicken loving person, fish and chicken, frog are my favorites, pork, beef obviously I'm not a vegetarian LOL! NEVER! Give me MEAT anyday!!! if you've never fried up frog legs, if the black leaders are not pulled out, the frog legs will "jump" move around while frying, the salt on them activates those muscles too its funny to watch and for when My Mother was alive she could never fry them up without shrieking because of them "moving" while she cooked them... now that was funny!!! LOVE FROG LOVE FROG COULD EAT SOME NOW!! DAMN GOOD!!!!

I live in Canada and I find that the frogs and frog legs here are gross. They're too mushy and they have a funny smell. They were much tastier when I had them in China, and I think that it's because they don't raise them in farms or feed them with chemicals and steroids. They were much firmer, and it tasted like chicken. Frog congee is my favorite. Stir-fry frog legs are good, too. :)

I live in Canada too, in Ontario. As far as I know and have seen the only frogs legs available are in specialty stores and Chinese supermarkets. I would not eat any fish or any seafood from China because it is there where chemicals and antibiotics are routinely added to the food for fish and other critters. I don't know where frogs are raised on frog farms in Canada but I know a lot of these additives are forbidden here. I have heard that people catch frogs in the wild in rural Quebec. I don't know if it is for their own consumption or for sale. In any case I would not like to try frogs legs, Canadian or Chinese. Somehow it does not appeal to me.

Ewww, no way would I ever eat frog legs. Besides, I think frogs are so cute. Would never dream of eating any one of their body parts. Actually, right now I am feeling sick just thinking about it. I don't think I will eat the rest of the day. Yuck!

I don't eat them and would never eat them! We used to go to a butcher shop and they had frog legs there too. My husband bought some and ate them. Ewww! I don't how he could stand to eat them but he did. He also likes pigs feet and I think they are gross too. Yeah, I have thought of becoming a vegetarian but I like my hamburgers and steak too much, lol. I guess I will never understand how frog legs are so popular but they are. A few years ago my uncle brought turtle meat to our Thanksgiving dinner and he and my husband ate it like it was nothing! Oh so gross! I would never eat turtle. They say it all tastes like chicken and I like chicken but I still couldn't eat it. My husband has also ate rattlesnake before! I couldn't eat that either. I don't think there is anything my husband won't try, lol. :)

I can't image why frog legs are so popular! Of course I think "hot wings" are outrageous too- too little meat for the price. Here in Houston we have the Livestock show and rodeo where cattle, etc are shown and later bought. One of the reasons I was never interested in raising any kind of animals for "livestock" shows (even rabbits) was that I would get too close and have to force myself not to think of my animal getting slaughtered. But I would not be a vegan, I put out of my mind that the steak I buy was once alive. Ugh.

I was raised on frog legs that my parents use to catch and then clean them selves. I do not know if I could eat them today or not. Last weekend we went to a Bask restaurant and they served Sweet breads. That is the thymus glad or pancreas. I did not order them I had the steak. I have no desire to taste that they or organ meat. I know it is wise to use the whole animal and have not waste but not me feed it someone else or put it in hot dogs or something I do not have to know I am eating it.

It makes you wonder how much meat is on them! I remember having the chance to eat them at a restaurant in Paris once - but I opted for the French onion soup instead. I could probably become a vegetarian quite easily, but I do love fish. I eat a lot of chicken, but could do without eating red meat again! (Would frog legs be called 'green meat', d'you think?)

Frog legs are yummy! So is sushi, oysters, ostrich, deep fried turtle and duck meat. I feel sorry for the animals too but are there any substitutes? Eggplant is supposed to taste like some kinda of meat for vegetarians.
