During the day, if you go on the internet for whatever reason, and when your done, do you have it completly shut down or do you leave it on standby? During the day, when I'm done, I'll put it on standby, figuring I'm going to go back on it. But at night I swutch it to shut down.

When I go out, I shut the computer down completely. Plus, turn it off at the plug.

I very seldom shut my computer all the way off. One of us is constantly on it even when everyone else is asleep I'm in my home office working so it's being used then also. It would be cut on and off constantly if we shut it off completely.

If it is always being used then of course, no point shutting it down only to fire it up the next minute.

It depends on how long that I will be offline or away from the computer. It it is more than 45 minutes I will shout down so that the heat inside the system get dissipated and if it is less than this time i will not shout down and I will simply hibernate the system.

I quite agree with you. I never shut down my computer completely unless I decide not to touch computer any more during that day. I never switch off the computer when I intend to leave for a short time in case I may come back soon.Too frequent switch on and off for the computer may cause damage to it and may possibly shorten the lifetime of the harddisk. keeping the computer standby only comsume more electricity. I personally think so.

Yes, actually i shut down my computer before i go to sleep every if it is still running, it seems not so useful for me when ths computer is running when i am sleeping, so in order to save energy, i just make it power off.

During the day I just leave it on. I'm a stay at home mom so I'm on and off it all day, between kids and housework. At night I turn it off, I used to just put it in hibernate but for some reason my hibernate feature disappeared last month.

I use a laptop for everything, so I unplug everything and put it on "hibernate" which I think is the equivalent of standby. Since it's on batter power, it doesn't cost anything to run it like that. I only reboot occasionally when it starts to run slow or has other problems.

Hi marty3888, Yes. I always shut down my computer completely before I go to bed. But if it is during the day, I would normally leave it running but just off the monitor (since that is the one consuming most of the electricity). If I am going to be gone for long, then I might consider just shutting it down completely anyway.

I am practically using my PC the entire day most days, so I usually leave the PC and internet connection on from morning to night. Only when I am done for the day and am about to go to bed will I turn everything off. I know some people leave their PC on throughout the night even though they don't use it, but for me, that's a waste of electricity plus one wears out the PC faster that way.

I just leave mine running all the time. I have dsl so if my computer is on I am connected if my browser is open. I only shut down my computer to restart every now and again but then I am on it a lot working and when I am not actively doing something I may have it downloading or defragmenting or something.

i will usually shut it down if im not going to be on it for awhile like if i am going to bed or going to watch tv but if im doing something where ill be back quickly i will leave it on to get back on later i know my parents will leave theirs on all the time probably afraid that they will mess it up if they shut it down in all the years i lived there dad never used the computer probably afraid he'll mess something up when they turn it off.

When it comes to my desktop , I just switch the monitor off as power consumption is not the one to be worried for . While in the case of laptop , I usually put it on sleep or hibernate mode with a download in progress .

I turn my computer off while I sleep most times, but during the waking hours if I walk away or go out I some times leave it on running folding@home.. Its conducive to medical science, but draws power.. Medical science wins over the environment I guess.

I'm on a laptop and I tend to let it hit standby mode. However, every 3 days to a week i like to shut it down and let it charge overnight. This more thoroughly charges the battery and lets windows re allocate all the system resources.

I don't shut my computers down very often. When I am not sitting at the computer, It will be running a security scan or burning a disk. Between me and the kids, we work our computers hard. There are a lot of programs that we run and then walk away. The computer will do the work on its own. When we return, the computer is optimized and clean of any viruses, trojans, worms, bugs, etc. I will park the hard drives before traveling. I take my laptop with me when I travel.

I always turn it off. It saves energy that way. I don't want to spend more on my electric bill.
