Would you donate?

We received a letter from our zoo. It was asking for a donation. We have a wonderful zoo here. And admission to it is free. It has one of the top rankings in the country. Our family goes frequently. The lowest donation in the letter is $50. That is alot for us right now, what with the new baby and all. I'd love to give them something. But it would have to be closer to the $5 range. http://www.stlzoo.org/

Do what's best for your own family. It's nice to contribute when funds are available, but your family is your first priority, I'm sure. It's the same way here. I would love to contribute money to worthy causes around the globe. There are dying pandas and starving children and I would love to save them all. There's even a really cool website called. http://www.kiva.org where you can make a micro-loan of $25 to small business owners in disadvantaged third world countries. These people are living in daily poverty and yet struggle to feed their families with small home grown businesses. Even former Pres. Bill Clinton supports Kiva. It's a phenomenal endeavor. Of course, they pay back the loan. I'd love to contribute to that too. But right now, I don't even have an extra $25 since my spouse was laid off from his job. I have to feed my family. And, that $25 would feed us for three days. It's tough times all over. So, please, do what is right for you. Noone will judge you for not contributing.

There used to be a free zoo a few counties away and we'd donate in their bins what we could afford. I don't think you should put your family out to donate to the zoo. Donate what you feel is appropriate and if $5 is all you can afford so be it. Keeping up with the basics for your own family is PRIORITY over any charitable contributions. My local zoo is on us from time to time to donate more, we buy a yearly zoo pass and that's enough on our wallets every year nonethless to donate extra or go to some fancy ball they are holding. We wouldn't buy the zoo pass if it didn't save us money otherwise it would cost us roughtly $75 for my family of 5 to go to the zoo, instead of paying $100 for the year and we can go as much as we want.

I like that zoo too. I like that it is free to get in. There are not a lot of free zoos out there anymore. I would be willing to donate, but $50 is a bit much for me to be donating right now too. I am surprised there is not an other amount space listed. I bet they would get a lot more donations if they did that.

I think it is important to help out and support various groups. However, I tend to be very conservative in when and how I do so. I like the smaller contributions that might only mean I skip my energy drinks for a week or don't eat out once or twice. $50 might be something I'd part with occasionally, but not often. I think matters would be a little different if I gave enough that I was taking a deduction on my taxes for charitable giving. In practice, however, I don't have enough that I get to save on taxes.

I agree they should give more options, or let you choose your own price. We wouldn't be able to afford $50 either. Our zoo is a very nice zoo, but they do charge admission, and it can be rather steep for a family our size. So instead, we buy a membership. It costs us around $50-$60 a year and we can go as often as we'd like for free. It also gets us into many other zoos across the country for free, and gives us a discount at other, larger zoos like the one in Toronto. Since we've had our membership we've only been to 2 zoos though, ours, and the one in Rochester about an hour away. It's an inexpensive outing, and going to Rochester gives us a change of scenery and we only have to pay for gas and food. So long as we visit the zoo more than twice a year, we've more than paid for our membership.

Like you I love to be able to donate for a good cause I have several people call wanting donations the firefighters, police, cancer, and wild life but most theirs is no lower then $20 I mean I want to help so why not take what a person can give to help little is better then none in my book but they just urge us to try to send them more and when they send the papers I can't afford it. $5 yeah I could take five dollars and do it easier then $20. So I would just donate what you feel comfortable with and if they don't let you donate that amount atleast you cared enough to try.

I would think that the zoo in question would be happy to receive a donation of $5. Many times, they include a donation price, because that is what they are hoping to get, but that does not mean that you can not donate a lesser amount. If you are not happy with the amount that you can give, maybe you can call them and ask them if they would like a "volunteer" for the day. One of the best gifts you can give is your time, so it might be worth a try. They will get something they need, and you will be contributing to a worthy cause. Maybe you could even find a sitter for the baby and make a day of it. Good luck!
