I don't call you names therefore I'm accepting and open-minded...

I know there are already some myLot discussions about political correctness... but I am just wondering... do we have to be rigidly politically correct to ever be deemed completely accepting of other people's different beliefs, skills and culture? I would like to think I am open-minded but I sure have, in my past and I know I will in my future, have made comments that will sure have every class, color or creed up in arms demanding an apology.

Who says anyone has to be perfect every second of every day? It's great that you're open minded...I like to think that I am too...but that doesn't mean that either one of us has to walk on eggshells for fear of unintentionally offending someone. The key word is "unintentional". If I want to intentionally offend someone...that's completely different from saying/posting something that someone else took offense to for one reason or another.

There will always be someone who would take things in the wrong sense or may make a big thing out of a simple word or sentence. We conciously try and avoid saying things which may be considered politically incorrect, but there will always be someone who will try to make it seem so. It's best to be the way we are, open-minded as you have put it.

I believe that I am open minded as well. But there could be instances when I retorted to reason with some impossible fanatics. And I see no harm in reasoning out if it doesn't meann to hurt anyone's sentiments. sometimes people go to the extreme knowingly and unknowingly just to prove a point. Argument is good as long as its open and not persuasive.

Look at President Obama's gaff and see what not being PC did to him. He has the whole country up in arms over an innocent offhand remark. This day in age everyone gets up in arms about something.

The problem with political correctness is that it is just as rigid (maybe even more so!) than the habits it purports to detest. Clearly people who tell OTHER people what is correct are making a value judgment based on their own point of view. How can that be correct. Truly open-minded people would never try to force others into their own idea of what is right and wrong. Of course, there have to be some shared values, just as there has to be SOME law and order, but one needs to examine the power structure and ask oneself just who is making up all these rules we are supposed to live by, and WHY!!?? In other words, who is really being served?

Just consider this: political correctness can be really boring. Our little slips of the tongue (keyboard?) add spice to the mix!
