I felt so embarrassed for this man yesterday at church. He was to read the 23rd psalm, and he couldn't read it. He even botched up the word "cup". My thing is he knew he was going to read this, and should have practiced before hand, and let someone help him with words he didn't know. It was really terrible and embarrassing. Would you practice ahead of time, if you knew that you had something to read and was not the best reader, or would you just take a shot at it withour practicing?

If I was not a good reader and I knew that I had to read something aloud I would be practicing as much as possible before hand. I might still mess up a word or two though. It is possible that he did practice and is just not a good reader or has stage fright.

Yeah, I guess you can rule out stage fright.

My thoughts were the same as your's. He did not have to volunteer if he knew his reading skills were at grade Kindergarten. I doubt if it was stage fright, because he has sung a solo a couple of times in front of the church before.

how do you know he did not practice? it is a little unfair and condescending for you to talk about him this way. Not everyone is capable and literate. He may just be nervous reading in front of others, he may have dyslexia, he may have poor eyesight or he may have not been privileged enough to secure a good education. People like him should be helped not laughed at or made to feel inferior.

He was not laughed at, even his mother commented. Primary and secondary schooling is free in the US.

just because education is free does not mean someone can afford to attend .. their backgrounds their family life maybe affects them .. their fear .. so many things .. i just think its sad sometimes people are ridiculed when they do their best and for me I would not have feel embarrassed for him but i would applaud him for trying as you do a child when they learn to read .. anyway sorry i did not mean to infer you were laughing .. i was merely talking about how some people react
