I need a little help with a situation about a cat.

My mother has three cats and one of them did something unspeakable to her dishes. She is ready to get rid of the cat and I am trying to persuade her to keep her. I have already told her that if she would just get her fixed then she would slow down and eventually stop doing it. There is a place where it could be done for free, but she doesn't care and thinks getting rid of her is all she needs to do. Any suggestions to prevent or deter cats from urinating on things besides getting the cat neutered?

She needs to take kitty to the vet. A cat will often do something like this if it has a bladder, kidney or UT infection. THey do this as an attention getting thing to alert you that something is wrong. Other than that, spaying her would be your best bet. She needs to have kitty spayed not only to help cut down on needless deaths in animal shelters, but to also help kitty lead a happy and much more pleasant life.

Is/was she in heat when she did it? I don't know - if you find any answers, let me know, I have to keep things like clean dishs away from my cats, but they misbehave because there are territory issues going on.

Yes, unfortunately all three cats are in heat. Also, one cat dislikes the cat I mentioned but the other cat is friends with her.

you NEED to spay your cats BEFORE they have kittens There are FAR too many unwanted cats in the world for anyone except a licenced breeder to be having kittens

Its already been decided that all three cats will never be allowed to breed. We just need to find a way to get them to a vet.

Cats will usually do something like that due to stress of some kind. Without knowing more about the situation, how the three cats get on with each other for example, I can't offer positive advice.

The cat is in heat and she is friends with one of the cats, but the other cat growls at her at every chance. Also, mother works all day, so the cats have the entire house to themselves usually.

Cats typically prefer to do their business on soft surfaces where the waste will be absorbed or where they can cover it. Dishes are not a place that a cat would typically choose for their toilet, which could be an indicator that something is wrong. Often if a cat has urinated in a prominent place like your bed, stove, or dishes, it is because the cat is sick and is trying to get your attention to get help. The cat could very well have a urinary tract infection (UTI). Female cats that are not spayed are at higher risk of getting a UTI. The cat should be taken to the vet and examined (and spayed). We had this problem with our cat, and once she was spayed and treated for the UTI that she had, we never had a problem with her again. She is a wonderful furry companion to live with now.

Thank you very much for your input, I will tell my mom about how that could fix the situation.

The answer is there in the fact that all three cats are in heat. Each cat is territorial, and will pee in inappropriate spots. Your mother HAS to get the three spayed. It will stop the behavior, the cats will mellow out and be more loving and less stressed out. Also it will prevent unwanted pregnancies and unwanted kittens. I would love to have a place that would spay or neuter cats for free!!! Make sure that if there is a litter box that the box is cleaned daily or even twice a day. Also check and see if it's the litter that the cat is objecting to. (I had that problem with my Siamese lady, Murphy. She didn't like the litter and would poop in my Mom's potted plants. Mom and Murphy had a battle going on for nearly two years. I would hear the battle cry "YOUR CAT POOPED IN MY POTTED PLANTS!" and Murphy would come streaking by with Mom in hot pursuit. I finally changed the type litter and the battle ended immediately. In fact the day that I changed the brands of litter Murphy was so happy that she rolled in the new fresh litter. Best yet, I didn't hear that battle cry ever again!) I am fairly certain that the problem is from the fact that you have three cats in heat and the raging hormones are driving the three of them nuts. The worst thing is that they will be in and out of heat to the point that it drives you crazy. The best and kindest thing you can do for your cats is to get them spayed.

We actually have two litter boxes for the cats and the litter is changed regularly, several times a week. She is using the litter box but for whatever reason she is the only cat that doesn't cover her business. Instead she scratches a cabinet or a wall near one of the litter boxes. There is also another cat that sometimes poops on the floor at the foot of the stares or in the bat tub. But she rarely does that.

I've never had any problems close to that about my cats, they are neutered though. Although, they still do feel the urge coz they seem to molest our blankets a lot...but they never urinate on anything else other than in the kittylitter.
