Are cats that are "fixed" are they gentiler and more kind than ones that are not? My Mr. Boots is gentile, talks/meows when he wants food or drink ect, will cuddle on comand or on his own accord. Where as my other two that are not are WILD & Anti-social. They are all siblings from differnt litters. The girls are not fixed and are weird by comparison....... Socks will pester me in the middle of the night for affection, sometimes sleep with me and surf on the pc with me other than those times she's no where to be found. Tootsie she's really wild, she doesn't like to be held, doesn't like a collar, will only be petted on her own terms (if you are on the potty of all places, she'll stand on the water tank or on the ledge of the tub and purr for no reason and try to be nice) in the bathroom but no where else. Does being fixed make a big difference in their personalities? If tootsie's behavior would improve I'd really be up for getting her fixed before her birthday.

I have eleven cats now...six adults five kittens. One of the cats in particular my daughter brought home when he was about six weeks old. He was mean and unattentive, my guess due to his age and being separated so young from his mom and siblings. Anyway, when we got him fixed, what a vast improvement. He was still standoffish, but a bit more loving. I think fixing cats and dogs does help tremendously as far as behavior, and I agree with your vet, can help prevent certain cancers. Try calling your local humane society, or local animal shelter for a low cost spay and neuter clinic. They should have some numbers for some to refer you to. We have a few here where I live. One's even a van that drives around to all the different counties to do the surgeries. Some of them are based on your income. But, the one I go to charges a low cost fee, 20.00 for neutering a male cat or dog, 30.00 for spaying a female cat or dog. They'll also have some of the shots, like rabies for about 7.00 more. It amazes me how expensive the vets are compared to those clinics. You'd think they'd drop their fees considering how much more beneficial it is all around for pets to be spayed or neutered, not to mention to reduce the pet population.

Please think twice about declawing the cats. Declawing isn't just pulling out a nail, it's actually amputating the last joint on their toes which are attached to bone. Read this article written by a vet: http://www.declawing.com/ With all my cats, I know what a pain it can be, but look into scratching posts or even putting those little "caps" over their claws. I regularly trim some of my cats nails which is very easy to do actually. But 700. for 2 cats, spaying and declawing....that's insane! Definitely check into a low cost clinic!! Good luck!

Thanks I'll have to call the shelter & see if they offer anything more inexpensive clinic wise than our vet. I'd like to get both girls taken care of & declawed though the thought of $700+ for both is a bit much.

Animals that are confined and not sterilized are at the mercy of their hormones and I'm convinced they are quite miserable. There is no natural outlet--don't claw the furniture, don't hump your sister, quit fighting, lay down and be calm while those hormones are raging, telling you to run and fight and procreate! It's like making a person sit on a cactus and telling them not to move or else! Be kind, get your girl spayed. She'll be so much happier!

Fixed males tend to get lazy and fat when fixed. I steer away from female cats. I did have one Tom that got ticked off at life after getting snipped. He would attack other cats and even dogs at any chance.

Okay... IF a cat is fixed while still young, they often retain some of their kittenish behaviors. However, if they are fixed later, getting spayed may or may NOT change them. I can give a good guess why Tootsie is friendly when you are stuck on the potty - because she's figured out you can't as easily grab her. That's why our Gizmo does it sometimes in the bathroom or after I'm laying down in bed. Probably Socks has also figured out when you are in bed or on the computer you are less likely to grab her as well. I would fix them anyway, because it will help them calm down not going into heat all the time, making them happier and healthier. An unspayed female is more likely to have reproductive problems even if she never has kittens. So, do spay your girls, they will be happier cats. Mind you, I have 3 semi-ferals and I like them that way, tho Gizmo does demand pets, the other 2 are "low maintance" pets.

I just wish getting them fixed was as inexpensive as just an exam + shots. I know the vet said I should consider getting the girls fixed as cats can get various cancers if they are not fixed. I'm more concerned about the declawing too! Tootsie is wild you pick her up she screeches like a new kitten claws out and everything and I worry bout my lil guy trying to pick her up.

well I think he knows he can play with Boots, & the girls usually won't stick around too long usually. But like I said if you pick her up be prepared!!! She's not even old she'll be a yr in july.

usually, particularily the males. the girls,it's kind of 50/50.my calico is a bit of a capital B,if you know what i mean..it seems if the boys get too close to her she gets punchy.but she may be afraid because she's small.

That could be cause the girls are both 1/2 -1/3 the big guys weight he's gotta be 17lbs if I recall at his last check up. Perhaps they are intimidated by him but I've seen them sit just so waiting for him to DTD w/ them so they aren't always being ummmm... forced to have realtions so I dunno. That's the only time the male is feisty is when he's chaseing them for some action or his food dish is empty! *LOL*
