hello mylotters! since we're all been here on mylot we have one thing on common and that is we are all typing things that we write in the discussions... now what i want to know is if how good are you on typing? like can you type without looking on keyboard? i remember on college when i took up typing lessons...i find it hard coz we are using typewriter and i really find it difficult assigning my fingers on typing a letter. i don't know how i pass that subject but up to now i am still using maybe 4 of my fingers in typing and i always look on keyboard coz i still don't memorized where the letters are placed! sometimes i envy & admire those people who are very good in typing, as in typing without looking at the keyboard...just looking on the monitor or on what they are copying... how about you? do you type well and properly? properly i mean as in what is written on the books... thanks for sharing and have a nice day!

yes, i can. I had no formal typing lessons though. I think my typing skills was develop after years and years of chatting and it kind of conditioned my fingers to be accustomed with the keyboard. It depends however on the type of keyboard i am using. I work better with keyboards with flat keys. The ones with protruded keys is kind of difficult and straining for my fingers. I do have a hard time typing the punctuations because i haven't memorized them yet until now. lol! Especially the [ and the {. It's confusing sometimes but my speed is still manageable. I can take a dictation.

oh that's good to hear that you type well... as for me, yes i can type fast but still i have to look at the keyboard...and as to punctuations, yes you said it! me too have difficulties on locating them... at leat on computer keyboard it is really easier to type, unlike on typewriters! my fingers are sometimes inserting on the spaces between the keys... thanks for the response modstar!

Oh no, i really haven't tried using a typewriter. I'm sure it will be doubly hard for me to type in that machine. lol! Well i guess we just have to get used to it then maybe in months or years, then i guess we'll be experts.

Yes. It was way back then during my freshman year in high school when the typing lessons in one of my computer classes gave me a headache. I really had a hard time mastering the keys on the computer keyboard but i mastered it step by step. I followed what our instructor told us that for you to know where the letters, numbers and symbols are located, you should consider as part of your body. As if your trying to remember by heart where your heart is located, where is your left knee or what's the body part next to your arms. Nowadays, you can enroll yourself in a typing class or learn it online. There are softwares offered in the internet who provides instructions on how to master typing using the keyboard without looking on it.

I took typing lessons almost 20 years ago, but I was never very good at it. At that time we didn't have computers at my school, so we had so practice typing on typewriters. Those typewriters were very old and there were often something wrong with them. We had to learn to type without looking at the keyboard, I found it very hard and I kept on making mistakes. There were some small tests that he had to pass in order to move to the next "level" , but I never made it past the first levels I am able to type pretty fast now, but I never type without looking at the keyboard. I don't use all of my fingers when I am typing, I have created my own "4-finger system", it not correct, but it works for me.

I guess I'm one of those people that you envy. Haha. I can type in the dark and still get it right. My dad taught me to type with an ancient curriculum when I was young. He had this old word processor and I wanted to use it so badly! He told me that if I learned to type using my home row keys that he would let me use it. I learned... he never did follow through. I love to write, so I practice typing a lot! Over the years I've just gotten into the habit of doing it more and more. My brother also can type without looking at the keys, but he does not know his home row keys. He just does his own style. I think it depends a lot on how your mind is wired if you can do it or not. I can do a lot of stuff in the dark that I can also do in the light. I used to stay up at night knitting. If I were to suddenly lose my site, I would still be able to knit. I don't know about typing, because I do like to see what I'm typing on the screen!

wow! and now i must admit...i envy you1 hehehe and admire as well! i guess your dad motivates you well! thanks dad! its good that you can do lot of things even on dark...but of course we don't wish to loose our sight...hehehe its always better to see what's around us. me, i can type fast but not as fast as those who are skilled in typing and i also don't know my home row keys and i really can't do it without looking at the keys...maybe you are right that it has something to do with our mind setting and i think i am not motivated well in doing it...but i wish i could do it one time... thanks dismalgrin...

I have tried a lot but I cannot so I just look down the keyboard and type everything I want to then I look at the screen to see if I have typed everything I wanted to. I have been typing since the age of less than 8 years and I just feel a bit uncomfortable to type while not looking at the keyboard all the time.

hi I was trained as a touch typist so of course I dont look at the keyboard. When my daughter was in her early teens and home ill from school one day, too bad to go to school but not bad enough to stay in bed, I got her at a typewriter (didnt have a computer then)and she spent the day going a s d f and then with her other hand and so on and after two days she was away. I find if you say the key out loud as you press it you will eventually remember it and soon touch type. Oh and by the way my daughter never forgot those few lessons and can touch type perfectly now!

Hi Ckyera! The answer to your question is in affirmative. Yes, I can type without seeing the keyboard. I know the conventional art of typing and can type the matter without looking at the key board and that too at the pretty good speed of at least 40-50 words per minute. I think those who know the art of type-writing can also type the matter faster than those, who need to look at the key board. We normally use all our fingers and both the thumbs to type, however, one of my former senior colleagues in my office was so perfect that he used to type without looking at the key board with ONE finger only, he was amazing.

That is my weakness too, that i can not type the whole sentences without looking in to the keyboard. Six years of using the computer everyday still i do not practice myself of home keys. Much better to look because i am much faster than don't that i am more on errors. You can type faster without looking in the keyboard if you practice properly the home keys, that each finger in right and left has corresponding letter and thumb of course for spacing.

I have to type without looking at the keys! Right now I am using my daughters computer. There are 11 keys missing! I would be totally lost if I didn't know where the keys are! But the little buttons that are where keys are supposed to be are hard to hit with long nails!!

It is a lap top. It would cost over 100 bucks to fix. She is a single mom who works too much and has 2 and 5 year old little girls! Who knows where they are! lol, not sure I want to know! The missing keys are, space bar, f,o,',6,windows and ctrl, alt,`~, and a couple function keys. Takes a little longer to hit the right spot sometimes!

aw...ok! i think its really better for you to master typing without looking at keys in this situation...its more difficult than typing with just erased prints of letters on keys...my friend has a keyboard with some erased letter.( i mean letters are not visible on keys.)

Hi, I taught myself to touch type about 20 years ago on an old manual typewriter and never look at the keyboard,in fact it is so automatic that I wouldn't be able to say where the letters on the keyboard actually were without looking, really glad I made the effort as typing is so speedy this way. Ckyera, the trick is not to memorise where the letters are placed but just to let your fingers memorise if that makes sense. Good luck with improving.

hi thea! thanks for the advice...i think you are right it is something that is automatic that our fingers will go to the place where the keys are located...and i think i always look at the keyboard while typing because i did not train my self to type without looking at it! i think if i put some more effort i can still improve my typing ability... thanks and have a nice day!

Yes I can, as I have done my typing course long back, and now I am using computers more than a decade now, so I got very much familer with the keys locations. It is pretty much easy for me to just type without looking on the keyboard, and just put down my thoughts while posting on the discussions. I do look at sometimes or the other, but most of the times it is without looking. My typing speed is also bit good (ha ha).

Yes, I can type without looking on keyboard! For I learned computer operations for four years. The first thing when I first went to that school is to exercise fingers on the keyboard without looking on it! That's the basic knowledge I must learn. I got lots from that experiences during my study in school. Until now, I can type more than 200 English words and probably 100 Chinese characers on minutes.

typing speed test - screen shot of my typing speed test.
Yes, I do type without looking at the keyboard. Well you can improve your typing skills, like me, by searching some touch typing tutor websites. You can try typingtest(.)com. Last year my typing was sucks. I was at 25 to 27 words per minute and my accuracy was 86. After a month of training myself how to touch type I was able to improve my typing skills to 45 to 50 words per minute and 96% accuracy. Now I can do 70 and above words per minute with an accuracy of 98 to a hundred percent. I attach a screen shot of one of my typing speed test.

Yes, I can type without looking at the keyboard. I can type fast. I had typing lessons when I studied in a foreign language school. We practiced very hard at that time and the teacher often hold competitive contests among us. We used typewriter at that time just as you did. The layout of the machine keyboard was nearly the same as those nowadays.
