I write a lot of poetry, and lately I've found my poems being influenced by writers such as Khalil Gibran and Nizar Qabbani. On the other hand, even though he's one of my favorite writers, my prose doesn't seem to take much after Neil Gaiman. Who influences your writing?

My greatest influences in poetry would be T.S. Eliot, ee cummings and Pablo Neruda; although there is much to be admired in Robert Frost and Dylan Thomas. But poetry is not just found where one expects it. For instance, the song Such Great Heights by The Postal Service is as close to poetry in modern music as you will find.

I do not write much and I do not emulate anyone since I believe that I am not good enough as a writer. I struggle with the thought and with the words and it would be good to write like some famous writers but this is not my case. Cheers!!

There are a lot of writers I admire but I can't say that I think that any of them directly influence the way I write. Each writer must find his or her own voice, right? The authors I love are Amy Tan, Stuart Dybeck, and Jane Austen. I also love those like John Le Carre, who write spy novels, although I have never attempted to write anything like that. For poets, I love Robert Frost for his simple, to the point writing. Also his constant referral to nature.

I do not think any of the authors I knew had a direct influence on the way I write, even though they are still considered as exemplary in literature. I began reading story books from the age of 9. I read novels meant for mature readers, both in Malay and English. Most probably to a certain extent this early reading influenced my style. Two Malay authors I am familiar with are A. Samad Said, and Shahnon Ahmad. I am unable to recall all their names but they include Isamov, Agatha Christie, ARthur Conan Doyle, Tom Clancy, Stephen King, John La Carre, and Grisham.
