Have You Moved Fron One Province To Another?

Canada
July 6, 2009 9:16pm CST
As you know I have moved to the city and it meant I moved from Saskatchewan to Alberta. That meant going from one province to another and what a gong show that was. I'd like to know if it's just Canada or is this the norm? Obviously I had to change three very important things, My drivers licence, car insurance and health care. Well here's what happened. I had to get a safety inspection done on my van which cost nearly 70 dollars and 10 dollars to get a paper giving me permission to get the safety done. Then after passing that I went to buy my insurance and drivers NOT so fast. I couldn't get a drivers licence because I didn't have insurance and I couldn't get my insurance because I didn't have a drivers licence, so then I had to get a drivers abstract then they questioned that because I'm 58 and have No convictions, Proud Me!!! Then they had me down at being 2 feet tall 3 inches and weighing 43 pounds on my past drivers licence. OMG You just can't fix stupid!!! I moved June 1st asnd I just got my drivers licence today in the mail. Now tomorrow I can apply for my medical because I have my picture ID. Has anyone else had anything like this happen? I will be happy when this is all done.

Isn't it something else? I'd have had a less stressful situation being put in jail than just changing my personal info. lol

No, I am glad to say I have not ever experienced that kind of stupid personally. My boyfriend, who is now my husband, did have some run arounds going to register his Rhode Island Car in Kansas, because the documentation is different. He had to show them how to do it on the books.

No word of a lie I left home at 8:30am and it was 5:30 before I came in the door. My brother in law bought me supper that night because I was so tired I could hardly stand up.

no I never moved from Montreal, been here all my 54 years of life. I know that even job requirements are different in different provinces, for example here in my field you have to get a license first to practice counselling, in Ontario you have to work for 5 years in the field before you get a license. Yes it is all so confusing and different going from one province to another.

My sister had a heck of a time when she moved from Oklahoma to a small town in Missouri several years ago. She's back in Oklahoma now, but way back then, she was fit to be tied. To get her license, she went to the photo mat/DMV/pharmacy/tag agency. They then finger printed her, and told her to come back the next day. She came back the next day and they finger printed her again - complete with the black ink! She finally got her driver's license, but then she noticed it listed her as male. She was beyond annoyed.

Boy oh Boy could your sister and I share some stories. lol Here's one for you I couldn't even apply for medicare until I got my drivers licence and it came in the mail yesterday so today I went back down there thinking I would apply for my health care for my brother in law as well as myself. I went through the whole thing then given a piece of paper with a very long number on it and told this was going to be my number but the health card would come in the mail. I said Thank You and as I went to walk away I was told, "Oh yes by the way the card won't be active till September. Another gong show!!!

Down here we have states, not Provinces, but Canada is a cluster for Americans when we go there. Canada does international dates and we do English order or some dumb thing. So my birthday is stated on my license by number in this order: Month, Day, Year. When they put my Driver's License in, they put your country's order: Day, Month, Year. The American/Canadian Border understands the difference, but apparently the young Montreal Cop didn't and tried to tell me I didn't have an American License. I told him to turn the Day and Month around and he said, "So you admit this is a fake license?" "No, I admit that our two countries don't have the same Day and Month order." Had to go down to the station, call someone of importance here, and have that person vouch for me. Thought I was going to be living in a Canadian pokey until I could get a Lawyer to tell that dim wit the difference. Luckily my commanding officer for Civil Air Patrol was home. Driver's License #, which would make more sense to put in than birthdate, should be used up there. So if that difference could make such a cluster, all the differences you had must have made tons of them. Surprised they didn't accuse you of having a fake license.

While I've never moved from one Canadian to another, I did temporarily re-locate to Arizona. I came back after about 8 months, as I was only down there, because my husband had a job there. Now we are both up here in Canada. Hubby's lived in probably every state in the Union, though. LOL

I bet ya are but here in the states yup we have to get a different state liceince and just change ins. agents but we can keep the same company like I have State Farm here. BUt when We moved around so much I mostly kept my Tenn. licence and ins. there for we were back and forth all the time!

I moved from Ontario to BC in 1976 and back to Ontario in 1995. I don't recall having any problems either time. Of course, I don't drive, so didn't have to deal with that, but I do know people drive on out of province licenses for months after moving without bothering to change them until it becomes an issue.

We don't have provinces here in the US, but some companies that we do business carve the different areas up into what they call service regions, so lately when there was a service we had purchased in Northern California and then we moved to Southern California, the company did not want to recognize their obligation to perform. They will have to eventually, but now they are stalling. It is disconcerting. I hope your situation is settling in. Good luck :-)

It must be very frustrating to deal with that kind of crapola. I guess a province is similar to a state in the U.S. Transitioning from one state to another and getting a license in the new state isn't a complex thing to do. Life in Canada is sounding more disagreeable to me the more I read from other myLot discussions.

One statement you made says it all: "You can't fix stupid." Here in the States, we have to change everything when we move from one State to another. Fortunately, it's MUCH easier than what you are going through! All you have to do here is show your old driver's license, pay their fee, get your photo taken and you get your new license. It's as easy to switch car insurance, too. Some medical insurances cover the entire country, some only a few States. Our medical insurance comes from my husband's employer. The mother company is located in California, but the insurance covers the whole country. The only problem we have with that is that this insurance sucks! Out of over $4,000.00 in medical bills I've incurred since we got this new insurance, they've only paid $14.00!!! I've had to stop seeing my doctors until we can find better insurance, or until I get Medicare, IF I'm ever approved for Social Security Disability. So, all in all, I'd have to say it's better here in the U.S., except you have to pay through the nose for medical insurance AND medical care.

i moved from one country to another country. It meant everything should start again. I really paid a lot of time to recover from the moving. I think i would like to settle down for a while now. don't want to move anymore.

WOW...isn't bureaucracy wonderful! OMG...you would think that you had moved from the Moon to Canada....let alone two provinces in Canada! What a frustrating run around! Hopefully, this will soon ALL be behind you! I am sorry, I did NOT realize your move had been so HUGE...but I am glad that you are closer to B.C., so maybe I'll get to see you soon! I hope you are settling in...and enjoying your new surroundings? I know you have family here in the lower Mainland, but do you have family in AB? I truly hope that you are finding some peace in your life, you have been thru too much lately! Please take care...and Cheers!

Thank you, so kindly, my dear friend ...for the "golden pencil"...I truly do appreciate the "best response!" You have made my day, but you can make it even better, by letting me know that your topsy-turvy world is experiencing some serenity! I have not seem much of you here...and am hoping and praying that, that is only because you are taking time to enjoy yourself....and to recover from a truly roller-coaster year! You have weathered two of the greatest stressors in life, divorce & moving...NOW, you need to look after you...cuz we love and need you here! Hopefully you are as "snug as a bug in a rug", surrounded by serenity! Luv ya! Cheers!

My sister moved from SK to Alberta. She had her car inspected and ended up selling it in SK and just buying a new car (she needed one really) because it was going to cost WAY more than the value of the car to take it with her. Her drivers license and such was even more of a gong show because when she moved she was also just married so she was also changing her last name as well. It took her AGES to get her insurance there. Luckily her husband had done all his paper work 6 months before when he moved there so they put the car insurance under his name when they got it.
