What is the worst smell you have ever encountered?

Yesterday when I was watering flowers at my parents house I noticed a strange odour, it wasn't really strong so I couldn't quite make out how bad it was. Well today I opened the top cupboard in the kitchen and I couldn't locate the smell than I opened the bottom and out came the worst smell I have ever experienced in my entire life. Rotten potatoes in a water puddle. They had probably been lying in that water puddle for at least 4 days probably longer and the smell was just incredibly bad. I never get the felling I want to throw up from a bad smell but this really made me feel sick. Now I'm going to get back to cleaning up that rotten mess just had to take a break with the windows open before I take on that smell again.

Mine would be the Durian. It's a spiky fruit here in the Philippines, very abundant in Davao, but I think it can also be found in other Asian countries. It really stinks. There was one time when a family friend gave my Mom some of this. It was placed in a plastic container. When Mom finished the contents, our maid washed and washed and washed the plastic container, but she couldn't get the bad smell out - we ended up throwing the plastic container away.

I have heard about this. I have also read that it is forbidden to carry it around publicly. What is this fruit and why is it consumed even?

I have smelled two awful things. First, the paper mill smell that was 30 miles outside of the town where I attended community college. Second, the smell from the local chicken factories like Pilgrims and Tyson. Yuck!!

Do those factories make you feel sick (want to vomit) or you just don't like the smell?

SKUNK!! I started a discussion awhile back about my cat's encounter with a skunk. The problem was that I hadn't realized that the cat had been sprayed until AFTER I had let her into the house and getting her back outside was an experience I never want to have to repeat again. She stunk...the house stunk...it was a real chore to get both of them de-skunked.

I have a pretty strong stomach and usually can handle bad smells. Though I will admit there is one smell to this day I will just gag at every time. Vomit. Mainly baby throwing up on you but the smell of vomit in general is so disgusting and strong. I gag every time. I have told people time and time i hated dealing with my son throwing up or spitting up more then a dirty diaper. I would rather change hundreds of dirty diapers a day then clean up throw up even once.

The biological mother can't smell the full force of their babies diaper according to a program I recently watched so you would have to smell another babies diaper and compare it to vomit to be completely sure. Guess worst smell is different for most people it's not like anyone goes around wanting to smell bad stuff. I was just unlucky running into rotten potato goo and now I can warn people about that.. still surprised me that a group of potatoes could get together and create that smell.

Hi wallie, I once had a rotten potato in the middle of a fresh bag and it took at least a day to work out what the ghastly smell was. It is really nothing though compared to the smell here when the cess pits are emptied by truck, that really is foul, especially if the truck is in front of you on a narrow road and you can't get past whilst the fumes wash over you.

Those cess pits sound nasty glad I don't have to deal with that than. But a bag of rotten potato goo is not a great smell either I can't breath that junk in or I start to caught.

My worst smell would be sewers. Part of my internship this summer has me going out to check on manholes for sewer systems and they are terrible. Let alone disgusting. And my partner has to go into them ha sucks for him. I won't get into a lot of detail, but its possibly the worst job I could have gotten this summer ha hindsight always kills me.

Yea, I agree that job must suck. Worst intern ship I had was cleaning dirty animal cages so you definitely win that one :)

you should take care. such sudden exposures to bad and very strongly bad at that- odours will affect your brain! so you should really take care of cleaning the house, either yours or your parents',and never let such rotten things lying around for days together. i tell from my experience, because once i had to be hospitalised for this kind of incident you narrated

Whew I can just imagine that. The two worst scents which come to mind at the moment are rotten eggs and cabbage water left to stand for a few days. Who knew rotten vegetable would stink so bad. Yuck. I remember bieng told about hydrochloric acid at school but i came face to face with its true stink at home one day. As I remember it, we were inside when we heard something as if it kind of explod. Pow*** we started wondering what that was but in no time we figured it out. The most pungent and breath stopping scent filled the house and we had to run out to try and get some air. A hen who had been setting on her eggs for some time seemed to have gotten the message that something must be wrong with her eggs. I figure she got upset and burst the eggs with her beak (that was the exploding sound we heard). The hydrochloric gas which escaped from those eggs was enough to kill an army. Ha ha ha. Id rather beg an hen to let me throw out her rotten egg than to have her break it near me.

There is a pit area that I need to pass through everytime when I go home, it smells really awful like rubbish or stunk... even I close the window when I pass this area, I sitll can smell it and need to open the window to make the smell go away... I think what's awful when you smell some terrible smell is you cannot get away with it until the smell goes away... :-p

A stinky diaper. My son leaves me with the most foul smelling presents. The garbage can is a close second, when we forget to put the garbage out one week and so it sits for a week in the garage. Brutal!

Well, its probably too late and stale to reply, mine would be the worst smelling reply. anyway, i ended up on this site because I too have been a victim of a rotten veggie. and what an experience...my oh my... and that blessed vegetable was the notorious POTATO.... I woke up for my morning prayer just before dawn, and there was this stench, like a 100 diapers rotting from the kitchen. I could sniff it all the way to the rack, found some onions, the onions were rotten too but partially, brought them close to my nose and took a short deep whiff... couldn't smell much, but i blamed them, n threw it off. But the smell didn't seem to die down, I then moved the greasy Oven, ransacked the rack, and then dad came in n started to search too... but then, i found this little sonofagun, saw two small potatoes, they looked good. i didn't expect them to be the culprits, i lifted one, n saw a dark brown bruise on it, just that..so to confirm, i sniffed it so close, damn me... and OH MY GOD, MY GOD....i made such a face, dad thought I got possessed, yucky hell...never smelled anything as bad..believe me.. the smell is still there, wonder when will it subside..
