Rice cooker?

I recently purchased a rice cooker, mainly because it was 50% off and it was one of the only appliances we don't own! After using it a few times I'm really wondering what the point is - minute rice takes a quarter of the time and tastes the same! I'm starting to think it will be relegated to a cupboard and never again see the light of day (along with the Magic Bullet and the Pasta Express). Does anyone have any interesting rice cooker recipes to share? Any tips or tricks for these little things? It's just a 6-cup one, but there are only two of us. It seems like it could be quite useful with the right resources.

we have a rice cooker here also and to me i consider it a most important part of my kitchen. we dont use minute rice to cook here though. its really convenient to have one here, as i jsut put rice, water, turn it on and leave it and do other things, cook other dishes, while the rice cooker is cooking rice on its own. we also steam there, like rice cakes (called puto) here (ground rice, sugar, milk, water, mix them they should look like a batter then put on small containers and tehn steam), or leche flan. sometimes when i dont have a gas anymore, i cooked instant noodles there too...

We have rice cooker but we don't use it because it consumed electricity. We only used it when we don't have LPG or when our stove is defective. If you look for convenience in cooking rice it is very helpful for you. We still prefer to cook rice in our stove than in rice cooker so we will know how to cook rice without depending in rice cooker.

My friend uses her rice cooker to steam veggies. I was so excited when I saw her do this, so I went searching for a good rice cooker. I never ended up finding what I wanted, instead I bought this little $10 MICROWAVE rice cooker from Walmart and I love it! I've only ever made rice in it a couple times, but I've had it for years. I buy a bag of frozen veggies (so much cheaper than fresh) and dump them in there with a bit of water and nuke them for 10 minutes and they're perfect!

I have a microwave one too and I'm willing to bet it's the exact same thing. I have never actually used it for rice (I don't like the idea of running plastic in the microwave for 15-20 minutes) but I use it for veggies almost exclusively. It works awesome for frozen or fresh and it cooks frozen veggies perfectly. One good thing about having a rice cooker is not having to wait for the rice to finish in the microwave before I start the veggies or vice verse, I can do them both at the same time.

I love my rice cooker. We have had and used it for years. I like that I can toss everything in there and leave. Come home, and rice is done! I like to have leftover rise to make fried rice. I also think the taste of regular rice compared to minute rice is a huge difference. I am sorry you dont like it, throw it in a yard sale with your magic bullet and pasta express! By the way, we love our pasta maker too!

First of all we generally do not use rice cooker. But i used one while I was away from home. I am going to give a very simple recipe. Buy some Basmatio rice. Chop some vegetable like beans, carrots, onions etc. First fry the vegetable lightly in a pan. Then put the rice with fried vegetable and water in the rice cooker. also put some butter in rice. get a nice fried rice.

Hi Jesssp, my mother is rather creative. She cooks the rice and steam the eggs at the same time. She puts in the right amount of water and rice, then break a few eggs into a bowl, throw in some minced meat, add some light soya sauce into the eggs, and beat the mixture evenly. She put the bowl of eggs into the rice cooker, among the rice and water. Then she switches on the rice cooker. It really saves a lot of time to prepare a simple meal.

Here's a list of good rice cooker recipes, and believe it or not your lovely little rice cooker can make a whole lot more than just rice. http://www.recipezaar.com/cookbook.php?bookid=80457 I myself am going to try the Turkey Barley Goulash Casserole recipe :) Though I must admit the creamy breakfast oatmeal recipe looks tempting too! I tell you people can be quite creative sometimes it's amazing some of the stuff people can whip together with what's only supposed to be a rice cooker ;)

I don't see the point of having a rice cooker, either, unless you just have too much counter space. I cook rice on the stove (not minute rice) and make enough to freeze a few meal sized portions. It thaws easily in the microwave, tastes like it's been freshly cooked and takes less energy than cooking it every time.

My granddaughter was given one for Christmas a couple of years ago. we used it a few time and having to watch it the same as if I were boiling the rice on the stove we don't use it any more because it's a hassle to have to wash both parts.

First go to an asian store and get some good rice, not the generic white rice they sell in the grocery story. I prefer jasmine rice, but there are many different kinds. You'll notice a difference right there. Second the biggest benefit is that you can set it and forget it. Throw in your rice and water, turn it on and don't worry about it. Allows you to focus on the other things you are cooking. It's really a convenience thing. It can also double as a steamer, just put a little water in the bottom and put in one of those foldable steamer baskets. Hope that helps.

I have to agree Teyjattt the difference is really in the rice you use. I like Jasmine rice but I really really love Basmati rice and sticky rice. I also agree it's a convenience thing. Nothing real special it just allows you to tend to other tasks at hand. We went to the oriental store today and finally found the silver pot and bamboo basket to make the sticky rice OMG I'm so excited about it!

You raise an interesting point. Many of us buy gadgets thinking they are covenient time savers at the time but find out that they aren't always worth the effort. I myself am speaking from experience having just bought a few. Talking with a friend recently I express an interest in one and her response was why. Will it do anything more than the way you used to do things before. And you and she are right, it will most likely wind up in the cupboard once the novelty has worn off.

Rice cookers are typically used for the preparation of plain or lightly seasoned rice, but more elaborate recipes are possible using a rice cooker, and there are cookbooks devoted entirely to dishes prepared using a rice cooker. One of the more unexpected dishes that can be made in a rice cooker is a beef stew. source :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_cooker u can make Pilafs, Risottos, Polenta, Chilis, Soups, Porridges, Puddings ,deserts and More in this rice cooker. u can boil eggs or u can make creamy oatmeal, carrot cake or any cakes , u can cook macoroni, scrambled egg, pasta, spagetti, chicken curry, indian breakfast item idli, apple or rice pudding, and u can cook any rice items called lemon rice, tamarind rice, jeera rice, egg rice, carrot rice,or any fried rice items and u can make any soups in rice cooker or boil any vegetable u want . so try any of these recipes. u can see many rice cooker recipes in the link http://www.recipezaar.com/cookbook.php?bookid=80457 Some rice cookers are designed to accommodate a basket above the rice. This basket is generally used to steam vegetables, holding them in the steam coming off the rice. Most types of dumpling and buns can also be cooked this way.

A rice cooker can be a handy tool. Minute rice may taste the same, however the less processed your food is, the more nutrients you can glean from it! It's the same with instant oatmeal vs even one minute. It takes a little less time to prepare, but you loose more the more the food is processed!

Hey Jess, I'm gonna get one next week. I used to have a small rice-cooker when I stayed in the Hostel during my College times. It's so good that you really don't need a stove at all. You can fry egg, make fried-rice and many more. Do you like porridge? You can make good thick porridge in the rice-cooker, let me see if I could PM you some recipes!

I love rice cookers, personally I think they taste so much better then minute rice. I don't own one myself, but when I make rice on the stove (same concept) I add salt, pepper, and garlic powder and the rice tastes great with meat vs plain rice. Try adding different seasonings.
