I am Looking for a Used Car

United States

The time has come to replace the car I am currently driving. Many repairs are needed and I just don't want to put more money into the darned thing. So, I have been trying out used cars for the past week. So far I have tried out a 2001 Subaru Forester that has 151,000 miles on it, a 2001 PT Cruiser with 62,000 miles, and a 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback with 117,000 but had been in an accident. The asking price for the Forester was $4500, the PT Cruiser $4900, and the Outback $3900. Because I travel in all types of weather conditions I need a car that is reliable and that is good in the snow! The PT Cruiser is in great shape. I love this car. When the car first came out I wanted one in the worse way. We test drove them a couple of times and whined when we had to leave it on the lot. A Subaru is a very reliable car. The Forester is said to need many repairs, one of which is bearings at $400 a pop and they need to be replace frequently. The O2 sensor can be faulty. There was a list of headaches that I found when I researched the car. The Legacy Outback was pretty decent. Even had heated seats. But the drawback was that it had been in an accident. The owner of the car bought it back from the insurance company and had the repairs done to the car and resold it. The salesperson said that he would make sure the brakes and the rattle in the back were done. But, I do not want to own a car that was in an accident. He said he would let me have it for $3500. When I left the lot I told him that if I came back to retest drive the car I wanted a Carfax report on it. I doubt I will go back. So, what do you think? What should I do? Help.

I for sure am not an expert on cars but i think they all have too much milage. I f u could find u a program car that what mine was & they have very little milage. u might have to pay more but would be better off w/a low milage car. Hope u find a good one soon. Happy weekend.

From the choices you have given IMO the PT Cruiser sound like it would be the best buy. Is it an "AS IS" buy? I would be sure and take someone with me who had a very good knowledge of cars and have it checked.

The PT Cruiser has a 30 day warranty. But it is a 50/50 warranty. We don't know anyone who is good with cars. Wish we did so I could have them check it out.

I am not car expert, but my choice would be car with lower gas usage... Second to look at would be the question how many people would drive the care with you. I would take the smaller the possible if you drive alone. Also lower mileage is better...

I would not pay that much for a wrecked car either. I think I would spend some more time looking around. You have to be so careful when getting a used car, especially these days.

Sounds like the PT cruiser is the best choice from those mentioned. The others already have high milage, just my opinion. I do know for a fact I wouldn't touch the accident vehicle with a ten foot pole. The frame may have been bent, a lot of times this happens making the car very unsafe. Be Careful Please!!!

I think personally the PT cruiser sounds great, I have sat in one before and I truly loved the interior of it... I wish I was able to get one myself... as it is I am currently in the same boat... I need to look for a used vehicle as well since hubby has done so much to my car in the last year and it still keeps breaking down on me... as it is I am without a car right now too... luckily my mom has been nice enough to come get me and help me out with driving us around. good luck with your choice and I hope you enjoy the car which ever one yet choose!!!

Forget the Forester and the Outback...the best buy is the PT Cruiser (I have no idea what that actually is) as this vehicle has the lowest mileage by far. The mileage on this vehicle is excellent and way too high on the other cars. Actually, the mileage is maybe too good on the Cruiser, get someone to check to see if the speedo has been tampered with. You DO NOT want a car that's been in a crash...there could be unseen damage and you would have no redress if something goes wrong. Good luck.

The PT cruiser seem to be the best of the lot. The mileage are way too high on the others and the one in an accident is not a deal breaker. There much better deals to be had out there.

That's a toughy.....well when I buy a car I usually go for the one I feel best sitting and driving in....the last car I bought I wasn't even looking for one when my son took me along to see his new one....I walked in....drove a couple not with the intent to buy and went home with a new car......so I think after you drive it you know which one by your gut feeling....I would however steer clear of the one that has been in an accident....for sure!

No idea my friend - no idea what you can do. However I had a memory about heated seats. when my BIL bought a car with heated seats and my sister drove it. when she felt warm she thought that she had peed mherself! Thanks for the memory
