Well, before you start screaming at the topic, allow me to enlighten you on why I've decided to put this up. I've often heard others condemning atheists. They say that atheists don't believe in God, so they are like communists. They are bad people. They have no faith in anything. Blablabla... I don't think these attacks are fair; neither do I think there's an iota of truth that atheists are bad. In fact, I believe that those who have a religion could possibly be worse that atheists. They go to their places of worship regularly, they pray a few times daily, yet they commit sins (e.g.: corruption, bad-mouthing, murder, dishonesty etc) So tell me, why do people say that atheists are bad or "bad" just because they don't believe in God?

Your question is interesting, since I too saw talks as funny as that the atheists are possessed by the so-called devils. It all went like this: There was an Islamic forum. You know very well what happens in a religious forum. There was one girl who had come up with genuine queries regarding some of the verses of the Quran, the holy book of the Muslims. She started with a discussion stating that some non-believer had pointed out some genuine flaws in the Quran or its prophesies. Can you believe that instead of addressing those flaws, the other members of the forum kept on repeating that "Ignore that kafir; he's possessed by Satan and Satan is also trying to deceive you by dragging you away from Allah, the true God!" while conveniently ignoring the queries! How ridiculous! Atheists might not have the complete answer (or the alternate answers to the religious counterparts) to the ultimate queries of life, like human existence, fate, existence of universe, afterlife and so on. But whichever answers they have, those are pretty rational and sensible. In other words, ideal atheists are honest and much better that they don't succumb to the crude senseless dogma of religions. I'm an agnostic but I find far more sense in the Vedantic, Buddhist and other eastern philosophies. They have no such 'special' recognition for an anthropomorphic silly God and that makes the Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Taoists etc. atheists too, according to the western notion of atheism. If that is the case, so be it! How's it going to make any difference to anyone? There needs no expert to claim that religion is the biggest reason for the mess of so many wars that have been fought till date. Still, the atheists are evil, they are possessed by the devil, they're ruthless and blah blah! Great blame-game! Funnily enough, there are many atheists with a positive moral fibre; and yet they're destined to be severely punished in hell just because they refused to bow down in front of the imaginary God. Heck, and what about the Muslims, Christians etc. who did not do any sin (sins only as accorded by the respective religious books) and yet also didn't do much decent practical social service? They are still qualified to reach the so-called heaven. Can it get any fictional than this?

I'm non-religious (but considered atheist by people) and I do notice slandering. Someone actually told me that I was a corrupt person and that I would go to hell. That's interesting considering I have never committed a crime, taken advantage of people, and I helped with community organizations before. I'm vegetarian but I'm not calling meat-eaters murderers because they consume meat that isn't necessary for survival. It's just personal choices that shapes people characters and statements cannot be made about entire groups of people because no one is exactly the same. Also, I wonder if other peoples religious punishment can really apply to an "non-believer".

Ha, no need to be sorry. It's pretty alright. Your questioning is justified and I can understand your agony since I've found myself in the same strange position many times in my life, on the internet (Personally there aren't many people doing that to me since there are pretty nice people around me, most really tolerant!) Honestly, it makes absolutely no sense when people say that the particular followers of the religion are only going to reach the so-called heaven. It sounds like bribery. Also that would make heaven a very deserted place, considering the fact that no religion is enjoying absolute majority and besides the fact that there are only a tiny number of people following every single clause of the concerned religion. I prefer the theory of Karma instead. (Though there are some questions against it too!) Don't worry, don't let such silly stuff bother your great work! Personally, I find your views near perfect.

I feel people are like that because if you're not with them you're against them. They say things like that to put the other person down to make themselves feel better about themselves. Most of the people I know that are religious only pick and choose what they want to beleive or what helps them out. If they read something they don't like, it is either wrong, doesn't apply to them or they just ignore it all together. Examples I can give are love they neighbor as yourself. Yeah that's a joke I think. Another one is murder. Did you know that it is one of the 10 comandments but all it says is. "Thou shall not murder" that's it. How many ways can that be taken? Ok I had someone murder someone for me but I didn't do it so I'm ok. It's just an animal it's not a human so I can murder it and be ok. (by the way I do eat meat and I'ma n athists).

i don't think atheists' are bad. they may not live by the law of God but they still live by the natural laws and the laws of men. oh, whats puzzling is though, most people who believe in God constantly engage in extremely 'sinful' things according to their beliefs.. they said it's the nature of men to sin, but if you do really believe in God, believe that you have an after life when you die, why do you go on doing things that you do? if you really knew in your heart that there is God, there is an after life, there is such things as heaven and hell, why do you live as if you have no religion at all?

Any atheists with morals are not bad at all. Infact from what I seen they won't be partial on helping you because of your religion. Helping you example school teachers helping nonreligious or part of another religion students. I seen alot of Catholics teachers in my school days showing partiality. In my school days I saw a student who was a nonchristian being bullied by the class and the teachers or school did not take any serious action against those students and kept on telling this student to learn how to self defend. They made those students to just write an apology letter. Couple years later in that same class another student came who is a christian. This student was also bullied and the school took immediate action suspension, detention, and discusion with entire class. Both students are very well behaved. The nonchristian student also faced another problem. The school advisor kept on picking on that student giving techers rigid guidelines you have to schedule test this and that day just becase that student is doing college options. She was scheduling in a way that test come on the day after that college class when normally tests are scheduled at the end of the week. All the techers are Catholic or some other Christian except one which she turned out to be an Athiest. All those teachers followed the advisor when they were suppose to raise something against the advisor or complain to the board. This Athiest teacher however appeared to the advisor as she is doing whatever she was told as she was still part time and everytime then she went behind the advisors back to help that student.

I think what you are dealing with is legalism. Where someone in a religion puts law before love and grace. Whatever you believe in or do not believe in, I think everyone should be treated with honor and respect.

I have never heard this theory, that atheists were worse than anyone else. You've got some bad information somewhere. I would like to challenge you on the assertion that people who hold a faith are worse if they do something wrong than people who don't have a faith. I guess, in one way, you are saying atheists are worse people, because you're not disappointed in them if they do wrong. I disagree, for the Bible tells us that we are all in the same boat. We all have a sin nature and none of us are able to keep God's laws perfectly, even those who wish to do so. No one is worse than any other, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Secondly, you say "they say that atheists don't believe in God, so they are like communists". Well, atheists say they don't believe in God. Communists say they don't believe in God. In that respect, they are alike. Not all atheists are communists, but all communists are atheists. Atheist Communist Josef Stalin killed anywhere from 20 to 60 million of his own people. Do you believe that a Christian who steals cable is worse than that? No, of course not. It's just that when someone sets a higher standard for themselves, it's easier to point a finger when they fail to reach it. I have yet to see one discussion on myLot where a person of faith has posted asking if people believe all atheists are weak or stupid or needing a crutch in life. Yet I see dozens of them at any time from atheists who tell us that people of faith are bad, stupid, weak-willed, etc. My question is: why does it bother you so much if other people want to believe something? Anyone who is truly happy doesn't bother to go around calling other people names.

I am an atheist and I would not say I am a bad person, yes we do not live by the 10 commandments or religious teaching, but we do live my morals. We still believe it is wrong to kill and that it is wrong to steal. At the end of the day we are more "honest" I would say because if we do something bad then we do not make excuses, where a lot of extremely religious people hide behind their religion "God told me to do" "It was a message from God" etc. I do not see how that makes you a "good" person.

I have never heard anyone specifically say that atheists are bad people..it's possible that what they feel for them is empathy that they haven't found the one true peace that they could have in life. But in the end, their beliefs or non- beliefs is between them and the creator, not for me to judge.

Atheists are not at all bad people. It is only that they need foolproof logical theories and statements to get convinced. Not believing in god is never bad. But try to believe in him at one time or the other and you may have a wonderful experience yourself.

I completely disagree on that .. i really dont think atheists are bad and have no faith .... For me every human that does the will of god , that is spread love in any form is a good person need not believe in a particular religion or not. The core of any religion is love, and it is said all the religions are one. Athesits dont believe in any god but they spread love in a different way ..

There is no point in saying atheists are bad because they are rationale in some ways for they say they have not seen the god in any form ever before like that. We have to agree that somewhat because I do not think there is single real proof in the whole world that explains about god's presence. It is upto one's interest or belief of god. Ironically, the people, who are cheating in the name of god, keep on increasing in many parts of the world.

Atheists are not bad at all! It is ones freedom to choose whether they wanna belive in anything or not, you give me solid proof that there was a god and you will have my full attention, i mean come on you can say he was alive but at the end of the day there isnt any proof. Anyways why are Atheists bad? What did they do to you? Like people sterotypically say they are bad for no reason, most people who say they are bad are people who belive in god, well if god is so good why is he making you spread rumors that particular people are bad because of their beliefs? If god is so "great" then why does he let so many people starve because of poverty? Think about it and why don't people who start these rumors just leave Atheists alone and out of it.
