Stray Cats

I live in a place where I end up with stray cats all the time, people drop them off, dogs, too. I usually feed the cats and at one time had twenty one of them just running around. I put ads in the paper but I already know they were dropped off by someone that really don't care about them. I usually don't have a problem finding homes for dogs that get dumped at my house, but what's the best way to find homes for cats? No one seems to want the ones that are already grown. If one has kittens, I can find the kittens homes when they're old enough. I don't want to dump these animals off at a shelter if I don't have to, they already seem to have enough problems finding homes for them. I don't let the cats in the house, my son's allergic to them, so they're mostly outside. Any advice??

That is a problem...no one EVER wants cats. You can contact a rescue agency that finds homes for animals without putting them to sleep. I don't know where you live, but here in California we have PALS which takes in strays. While they're waiting to find a permanent home they'll be put in foster homes where they will be loved and taken care of...like orphans! I hope you find your furry friends homes soon!

Just do a general search for Humane Societies in your area or animal shelters. Look at their policies and programs and find one that works for you. It's a great way to find a home for a homeless pet.

Hi. I also have the same problems as you do, only my garage is becoming the dumping ground of people who don't want cats. I think its because people seem to think that you like pets and that you can take care of these poor animal. But one cat or dog is enough. Dogs have no problems being adopted, cats are a different issue. I've had no choice but to put the cats in the shelter since I cannot care for them because my mother has cancer and I am taking care of her. I know it breaks our heart to see them placed in a shelter, but sometimes wwe don't really have a choice.

They say that in profiling serial killers, they usually start out by harming and killing small animals. LOL. Watch out that neighbor. Thank you for showing concern for my mom. =)

I hope that your mom gets well too, and I know how you feel about putting them in shelters, but don't let it make you feel so horrible, my downstairs neighbor sometimes traps stray cats and takes them to this hidious so called "shelter" that if a cat is not brought in by its owner, it autmatically gets euthanized , you are giving them a chance, which unfortunately, a lot of people wouldn;t even bother to, so don't feel bad.

lol...that's where they end up usually, I have a place under the door where they go in and out of the garage here. I can't actually park my car in it because some of them have kittens and I don't want to run them over, but it gets to the point where I hate going in the garage because it smells like cat pee. Feeding alot of strays does get really expensive....maybe I should put a sign up that says 'if you leave a stray, leave a fifty pound bag of cat food or some money' lol....probably a bad idea, it would probably make people drop off more and think it was ok with me! I hope that your mother get through the cancer and ends up in remission and that you are dealing well with the whole situation.

In my neighborhood we have strays, too. I can't bear to see an animal hungry so I put out food for the kitties. They don't seem to want any in the summer, strangely enough--I guess they find enough mice and birds to tide them over. If I had the money and could catch them, I'd like to spay/neuter every one of them! That would save them so much misery. Sorry, I have no advice but just wanted to let you know that you have plenty of company!

stray cats and dogs are everywhere and i wonder why their owners allow such pets to wander around without taking care of them, stray cats and dogs are often taken care by the animal control centers here in south africa and most times they do offer people the opportunities to adopt such stray cats and dogs

Here, animal control only come out to collect animals in extremely dangerous situations now. They respond fast if the animal appears to have rabies, bites/attacks. I would rather keep feeding the cats until I find homes for them instead of having animal control come in and put them to sleep.

hi there, Yea, these things happens in my place, too. I have three cats, one comes from a family member, the other two are street cats, they followed me home after several times of feeding them, some people tend to dump them when they are grown big. Sorry about those poor animals, but since there is not an effective way to deal with those street cats and dogs.

I think people get them as cute little kittens and forget that they turn into cats....or like the ones that I get that are already pregnant, they don't want alot of kittens. I wish people would think things through before they actually go get a cat or dog.

I used to pick up stray cats before, but my mom is always mad at me for taking care of one, so i end up sending them away. good thing i don't find them anymore, it's rainy here and probably they're hiding in some shelter from who knows where.i had a contact where i can put these poor little things but she stopped accepting them because she has problem feeding them too.

I'm guessing your mom probably is afraid of getting too many cats, and the more there are, the more expensive they are to take care of! Too bad your contact can't accept anymore of them, it sounds like it was probably a good place to take them.

I feel good that I can feed them and they have somewhere to go when it gets extrememly cold in the winter, but I can't give them the attention that just one or two would get.

I am not sure how to find a good home for a cat unless you have an animal shelter in your area or a humane society or and adoption agency. Dogs seem to be easier to get rid of or find homes for though. People drop them off around here too.

Try to put an add on craigslist or something somebody will want them somewhere. but that is true often if the cat is an adult it is harder. but one thing you can go to keep them from having so many kittens is go get a live trap and take them to the vet to get them spayed or neutered that will help keep the numbers down. or you can try maybe contacting nursing homes or some place that has elderly people who may want an older cat because they just want a lap cat. but if the cats are ferel then you may want to find someone who maybe has a mouse or small rodent problem as the cats can help to keep that down. the last resort however may be to take them to a shelter, or maybe you should post flyers that you have free cats to give away to a good home. people may contact your especialy if you hang them around the shelter.

I think you are a great person for what you are doing...I do have a cat, but I can not have to many because I have a newborn baby, and I wanna avoid the mess and to much bacteria arround my baby. But I used to have like 5 of them once, and usually, was taking me while to find a house for them. It is better to find somebody who is going to take care of them, because in the shelters they will put them down, wich is a sad reallity. Good luck to you and to your great cause!
