Do you think companies are targeting our Mylot posts to to send us advertising?

I used to sometimes have books sent over through Amazon, something I've had to cut back on. I still have an account with them though. I have never bought any music cd's from them though so was rather suprised to just receive an email from them promoting Leonard Cohen music. Now I've posted something on here with hardly any response I should add, about loving his music. So I wonder now if companies are reading our posts to target us for their products. Maybe they employ someone to read our posts and pick up on products we like or use. Any thoughts?

Knowing a little about the way ecommerce and online marketing works I would say that it is not through your myLot account. What is most likely the case is that when you have been logged into your Amazon account you have browsed through the site for his music. Amazon keeps a track of what you both buy and in this case look at so that they can send out emails promoting products which they know you are interested in. All of this is basically intelligent user profiling and delivering content to members which will most likely interest them rather than just generic products which could make you a bit cheesed off with Amazon.

Well Thea I am going to throw your idea straight back at you, in a nice way, with this question. How would someone who opens an account on myLot be able to come across your profile and then tie that back to your Amazon account? The only way it could be possibly done is if they had your email address on myLot which is not readily available to other members. So I would discount that idea. So going on what you said about not logging into Amazon for over a year. This to me could indicate that Amazon are in some way linked to myLot as that would be the only way for them to get the information that you liked Leonard Cohen and your email address to tie in your accounts. But any site which is linked to Amazon has to state so clearly and I don’t believe that myLot is as they do not state it. So this then leads me to believe one of two things, crikey I feel like Sherlock Holmes solving a murder case. a) Either they have taken your Amazon profile (which you haven’t used in ages) compared it to other Amazon members with similar tastes and sent you out a marketing email with speculative products which match that profile in the hope they appeal to you. or b) It’s just one big coincidence which does happen as Amazon do tend to send out a wide array of marketing emails featuring various products.

daily. There is no where Amazon would waste their money to employ someone here in myLot just to check every discussion or post. There is 180K user here with 3 million discussion. That is a big task and required a lot of time. Even if they found something can be connected to Amazon, there is no way they know the email address of the poster. Unless someone in myLot admin done something fishy. And I doubt that.

Hi thea, I don't think that is the case. Since you have an account with them, they will sometimes send a newsletter or some promotion information for you. This is the way they contact their previous customer. Even though they read our post, it is impossible they know or email since it is a personal information with only myLot admin knows it. It is also impossible for them to just guess our email address base on our username. I don't really believe that case.

Hi akuler, I have to say we'll have to disagree on this one. The only promotional things I've ever had from Amazon before I about books which fit with my usual taste. I think Mys is more likely to be right with her comment that they could be looking at profiles rather than actual posts made though. And how do all the other junk mailers manage to send tons of emails out every day about all their products, I haven't given them my email address, these things are passed on between companies. You can buy one thing on line and they can sell their list of buyers I believe.

Hi Akuler, I'm afraid you missed my point. Amazon are not spamming me, I have an open account with them and do receive emails from time to time recommending books which are the same subject matter as others I have ordered, for instance Holocaust books. I am saying they had no way of knowing at all that I liked the music of Leonard Cohen, no way at all, except for through Mylot.

They're more likely to be sending it to all customers and trying to cash in on recent attention/popularity (reissiue of his hits album/ concert film/dvd / covers)

I really do hope that is not the case There is one word that is always there in most of my posts and it could be quite, uhm... well let's put it this way - it could help when Christmas comes but if they also check my profile goodness knows what might arrive Whatever might I get sent seeing as I'm always talking about 'having FUN'?

That is EXACTLY what I was fearing. As long as they arrive empty that would not be cause for concern but sometimes they send free sample too right? Oh my goodness doesn't bear thinking about!

Hi Jo, neither am I. One thing I did learn to do was to prevent the literally hundreds of junk mails coming in on a daily basis by putting the key words they used, for example viagra, in some bit of the computer which sent anything with that word in the title straight to the dustbin. But they get round that one these days be spelling it vi*agra. Really they'd be much better checking out their receipients before endlessly sending this junk.

Hello Jo, you'll be pleased to hear we had a little relief a couple of hours ago, a wonderful thunderstorm with glorious rain, everything smells wonderfully fresh again and it even alerted me to some new mint which is growing wild behind the house, I could smell it from inside. It didn't last long but it was lovely while it did and I selfishly didn't give a thought to the tourists lining the beach. Normal service is now resumed with the return of humidity. It made me think of you though. I'm glad you aren't innundated with junk mail, it's a real nuisance, it could still be from the days I had a web site up in my case.

I have been getting more emails lately from various companies selling all sorts of stuff. i suppose they cold do that but I hope not, why commercialize a good thing? well I guess it wont really affect me one way or the other because my money is so tight I only buy what I really really must have.

Hi thea, The possibility ca not be ruled out. I have not got anything from Amazon as yet but surely some users might be following certain categories like Computer, Music and movie and wherever they see people showing interest and that suited their promoting tips. But I am not sure if this is going on but ....

I am not sure about that. and i don't think mylot is giving out our personal or account information, so i don't think so. but maybe you were their customer before and they'd probably sent you an email. you can always ignore it.
