Another Downgrade Of The Upgrade

Sort of a rant here. As you know MyLot did a recent upgrade and many of us think of it as a downgrade. Number one: If you go to the "friends started" pages, it now goes in chronological order, that is the newest discussions are listed first, kicking the older ones down, and they remain stationary despite being recently replied to. Two: The "friends" started pages only goes to ten pages, so the so-called "older" discussions are eliminated so we can't find our friends discussions that they have started. However, here's the worst of it in my mind about the new "upgrade". In the past I often liked to back-track to my older discussions to refer to something I had previously written about...well guess what? Yes, the same thing. My discussions started pages only go up to page ten! Now being that I've been here three years, you can imagine I've started a LOT of discussions...in fact when I had last counted I had well over 130-pages! Now I only have ten pages of discussions started...THIS SUCKS. Like I said I often used to back-track to older discussions and now I can't. Have any of you noticed your older discussions obliterated into the twilight zone and are you ticked off about this?

that does suck! I have had to refer back to discussions in the past - glad I bookmarked the ones I go to all the time!

Hi pye, i don't mind you ranting all and I don't like this downgrding, not many users like it as I have so many people complaining about it, my discussions only goes up to 5 when there used to be more, well thats what mylot does, yes its SUCKS. Bright Blessings. Tamara

I wish there was like an "archive" website listing for old MyLot discussions--I miss seeing my old discussions now

Good Grief Pye! I go away for a couple of weeks and the whole world turns upside down. What's going on here? Why all the changes? This is crazy, I like when you reply to a discussion and it comes up first, if I'm understanding what you're saying. I'm afraid to leave again, I can't imagine what will happen next. You should be able to review your older discussions for reference like you said. Doesn't sound very fair to me.

Hi Pyewacket, I have been away a while and hadn't realised there had been upgrades but that would explain why I can't find a lot of my discussions too. Like you I like to refer back and also as we have banter on here I like to see if there have been any added commetns which we get no notification for but alasI cannot do that. Thank you for answering my discussion as it makes sense now so at least I know I haven't been in some wierd time warp and it is a blip in the Lot sytem instead. I can understand why you would be a bit disgruntled by it as you post a lot and 10 pages is nothing. I also remember receiving a response to one of my discussions that was over a year old and I responded to one that interested me of the same time span and through that I got to meet a very lovely myLotter in person who came and stayed at my home for a few days, it is sad as this now will no longer be possible to have happen. Huggles. Ellie :D

I used to really like going through my older discussions especially if I wanted to refer to it if I was writing up a full length article about the same topic. It was also like a trip down memory lane and could see how I've changed over the years being here in how I thought back then

The only thing I can figure is that all those discussions were taking up a lot of server space that was costing them more and more money to maintain. I have a lot of discussions I haven't decided BRs on, so I don't know if I'll be able to now. I trie about once a month to get a bunch done, but I fell so far behind. Unless, they have them on a different server to make room on the active server, but when we delete the ones we have, they'll bring the other ones over to the current server - assuming that is something that can be done.

Yes no doubt all our discussions took a lot of space...but sure wish there was a way to access the old ones...they should have warned us here they were going to do this that way we could have had time to copy the ones we wanted to keep

Well - this is just another to add to the list of things to do to add to the destruction of a decent site. Everyone should bombard the admins using the "contact us" page, & demand that they undo this monstrosity. All that it does is make it difficult, especially if they don't get emails when getting responses, to find new responses to discussions.

Update - for me - it looks like they changed it back. Either they heard us & yielded, or it may have been a temporary bug in their system that they exterminated.

The weird part was, there was no alert to the particular downgrade. Even though I was no where near a computer when mylot shut down for upgrades, I only heard about it being down from another discussion. It looks like maybe MyLot changed it, & then changed it back, or when they did whatever upgrades they did, it added a bug into the system that MyLot exterminated, or it may have been only a temporary situation that got taken care of.

I wished MyLot had "warned" us they were planning to do this. When that other site, Ciao announced it was closing and one wouldn't have access to even one's own reviews they wrote I did copy them all...so wished we had been warned here...would have copied some of my favorite old discussions

I can see how that would piss you off, Pye. After all, that's how you found Tigger's story broke up into several discussions for me. Have it all saved to disk at that so I never lose it again. lol I don't go back to former discussions unless they are my friends' discussions that I want to respond to since I wasn't active for quite a few months on here. If I'm rambling its' cause I can't see straight for being soo tired.

Just a week or two, and just before myLot went wild with the so called upgrade, I was able to save all my discussions in notepad. It includes the URL of each discussions. So whenever I wish to back track to them, I can easily go to them. Question now is are tey still available? Did myLot deleted those oldest discussions, 3 or 2 years old?

Hey Pyewacket, I just got back so I am still trying to absorb all the new things that have happened...I am on your side though...if a discussion has been responded to it should go back to the top of the list...it only makes sense that the most popular discussions should be more easily accessible...

I'm a long, long way from having the volume of discussions that you have, so I hadn't really noticed. However, I'm not really surprised that some of the older ones have been removed. If you think about the huge volume of data stored, sooner or later it would have to be 'cleaned up' just so that it becomes more efficient. It also makes it less likely to have duplicate discussions and be penalized because you happen to start a discussion that was the same as one started 5 years ago, that you didn't even know about. For the discussions that are still available, it's a shame that there isn't some sort of filter where individuals could sort them by author, date, last response, etc.

I am not going against the idea of being able to go back to what you wrote to be able to reference items you have written. The thing is on the other side of this, as Mylot grows it to needs space to save all that is done by each member. That can take alot of server space. See you can't just put it on a hard drive and it is acessable to everyone, it doesn't work that way. It takes programing as well as security to keep up with all of the entries made by each member of Mylot. Also takes bandwidth that also is a cost. It could stay the way it was, then to pay for this service it would probably cost us in what we make with the writing we do. So looking at the cost vs saving to pay its members, which would you do? Now on the members end of the upgrade I can see how for years you were able to go back to your previous work. I actually have gone back in some people's profiles of things they have written and found some very interesting discussions. It is sad that they have disappeared. It isn't an easy change for us the members to all of sudden not be able to do this. Still change comes, and we have to be able to change with it. That's what they keep telling us older folks...lol I am constantly told by my kids "mom catch up to the times" lol Thing is in some area's I am actually ahead of them. So in my opinion we help each other stay up to date with life. Its all we can do here is help each other to get through the changes of life, or here at mylot.

I just wish that MyLot had "warned" us of this plan to zap our old discussions...if so, I could have back-tracked and bookmarked them...the old discussions ARE available if you have the links to them as one friend here pointed out, but you have to know the links...or maybe the keywords.

If they are still available like you say, then those that know keywords would be able to get to them. My suggestion is if you do find some of your links, I would copy and paste in a word document on your computer to save them. Maybe list them by date or category so it is easier to go back to find what your looking for. Doesn't hurt to back up the back up for yourself. Just an idea ...

Yes its something you might want to complain about but have you actually sat and thought about why the change was needed??? Its not big surprise to anyone that understands the internet to know that there is some way to get back to your older discussions - it just takes a little bit of time to honestly think of a way to do it because nothing disappears forever. The thing is mylot needed to free up space to save them money and with over 180,000 members and continously growing can you imagine if all those members had over 10 pages worth of discussions? Do you realize the amount of space that would take up? Its about saving money and being able to still pay the growing amount of members and still be able to save on overhead costs etc. At least they aren't premanetely deleting older discussions. Plus do you think you are the majority on mylot? Do you think most go back and look at older discussions - no. Most members won't even go back to look at the responses to the discussions they start, so again majority wins. And it would be a shame to waste the space when people with a ton of discussions sometimes tend to be the type that start 10 a day which is over kill since they are the ones that don't go back and look. I understand you've been here awhile and that is why you have so many, but a lot of newer members "spam" the interests.

Some of the glitches I noticed a couple of days ago I have noticed have gotten better, and things are a little more random here. Maybe that is to help get more responses? But it can be quite frustrating for someone who likes to go back to their older discussions especially if you have a lot of unresolved ones as well. I think it would be nice if people could have more control on looks and choose which upgrade they like, etc. as well. But hopefully some of these glitches are temporary and we can see things like before as well.

Hi Pye, I will say I haven't looked but do know that some of my first discussions were quite interesting and now am known better here it would be nice if they are still there, but will look and find out. I remember you did answer one of them...it is really bad if that has happened, sometimes people like to backtrack on others old discussions and it is nice to have a response to those, so am rather annoyed that has happened. The Upgrade here is certainly a Downgrade...bb LoLo

I wasn't on for a while and today is the first time I spent a fair amount of time on here and I hate hate HATE this 'upgrade'! It really isn't fair for new users who are trying to make new friends and get into Mylot because their discussions just float right to the bottom and get lost in the shuffle (even more so). And for established users it makes it very difficult to keep up with their friends' discussions, especially if they haven't been on in a while. And I really hate that I can no longer go back and check out old discussions. Some of them represent a lot of work and a lot of thought went into them. I hope you're listening Mylot, because this really does SUCK.
