Do You cook with the Cooking Shows?

I really enjoy watching most of the Food Network cooking shows. From Paula Deene to Rachele Ray to Bobby Flay... although I admit, I am not to pleased with the new ones lately...but the oldies but goodies... their shows are fun to watch. So I watch.. but I have to admit.. I have NEVER made a single dish that I saw prepared. Often they just use so much stuff that I never even think of buying muchless want to buy, I don't spice in over-time like they always do.. I just love the natural flavor of foods, spiced gently. But still...I have not made a single dish in all the years I have been watching the shows. Part of my not doing it is there is no recipe. ALot of times it is just eye-balling things like four cuts of meat for a meal for four etc, but still... How about you? Have you made any? How often do you make something you saw on a cooking show?

Unfortunately, not very often. I'm not all that sophisticated in the kitchen. I'll throw together things out of my own imagination.. but they are really pretty simple affairs in the end analysis. My sister in law once prepared a batch of candy from watching a Paula Dean show. It seems to have worked out well for her. Me? I have some fears of the type of damage that can be done from molten sugar.

I watch alot of them (well, not so much anymore as I have seen most everything there is to make!) but I haven't made a single item I have seen! I like to cook and am good at it but for some reason, things I make never turn out like the book shows or in this cause it would be how it was on the show. But they are fun to watch

There used to be a show called the Frugal Gourmet that my father watched and I thought was interesting. As I said, I am not a person of high means, so any show employing truffles or snails is above my head and my wallet.

I remember him! But yeah, that's kind of like me...just to much odd ball stuff they use now that I either don't like, can't afford, never heard of or can't find!

I've never actually made anything with them but, I used to cook while 30 minute meals was on. In our area it came on just about time to cook dinner. And the way she ran around with all that energy inspired me. I actually had fun cooking and buzzing around the kitchen. And most of the time I was done cooking, had the cooking dishes all done, and the stove all cleaned up. Just had to sit down enjoy the meal and wash the plates and forks

She is inspiring with her personality and energy. She started as my fav and still is, but Paula Deene is my current fav. I get annoyed with 30 minute meals as most any meal you make, the actual cooking/baking time is only 30minutes.. its the clean up after and the pre-cooking before that takes the time! Do you have everything you need literaly at your fingertips in the fridge like she does or do you have to search around for things? I don't keep exactly 4 potatoes on the counter nor do I have the utensils sitting right there waiting for me! I have to search the cabinet to find what I want! Silly, I know and no one would watch if she did actually do it like that, but still...I get annoyed with cooking as I am tired of all the prep and clean up! I would love to be just like Rachael and do only the cooking... and let the staff do the rest!!!

:) I actually try quite a few of the ones that I watch. I don't watch that many , and even when I do, I don't' watch all episodes, but quite often I find a recipe that I really want to try. I won't say all the time, but very often in my case. I don't always do it exactly how they did it. I adapt the recipe to what I actually like. I don't usually write down the recipes either, just get the idea of what it is and what is uses.

Actually that is probably a better way of doing it if you do use their "receipe"... make it to fit your own tastes. I might have been more likely to do some of them... when Rachel Ray first came to town... I loved hers, but then she just got to fancy smancy with everything that a plain "home cooked" meal in 30 minutes looked more like a partial meal made with things I have never heard of before! Now Paula Deene... now there is a cook after my own heart!!!

I never made a dish from the TV shows either, not ever. The only difference between you and me is that I think they UNDER spice, lol. What grosses me out about some of the cooking shows is the lack of hygiene. I will never forget a show on making desserts where some famouse chef licked his fingers, wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand, and then without washing stuck his whole hand and arm into a pot of chocolate frosting and mixed it with his fingers. Shudder. It is a good thing we saw that show because we had been thinking of buying something from that fellow's trendy shop. NOT!

Oh, I'm with you on that one! At the end of the show, I really dislike watching them taste their own food as they hang their head over the bowl/plate of the rest of the food and ohhhh and ahhhh hand moan and groan how great it is... like we expect them to say anything else!!! I just watched Diners, drivins and dives... and the host is visiting places around the country and then goes into the kitchen and they help him make their signature food item... and he is in flip flops. All but barefoot in the kitchen... to me that is just unsanitary! Granted, if you do it yourself at home... that's your business (not you personally drannhh!) but for cooking in a place of business, and cooking food that will be served to others to eat... barefoot is just gross. I watched one show where the owner of the resturant was an older guy.. and put a red hat on him and you'd had Santa - long white, fluffy beard....hanging down nearly to the top of the pot he was stirring. Hair falls out all the time and to think that that beard hair could be falling out into the food he is preparing... just gross gross gross!!! But there he was on national tv doing it. Wonder if the board of health saw it!

I have never made anything fron rachele rae, or any of the others. like you, i have watched them and still on occasion do. but find it hard to really get into what they are fixing.. i guess paula Deen comes close to home for me.. but i really like to wath the show diners and drive inns that is hosted by the man named "Guy. he is so cool ! and there you can get recipes that you can actually fix ! except i usualy watch him late night and i get so hungry.. watching all those diners and drive inns fix there home cooked food..sometimes is too much so i admit it, it has bumped up sale sales for our local late night resturants, wendys, and such i now , because i saw this on a show once, have a favorite of wendys' vanilla frosty dipped in there french fries, oh it is so good.. i crave it almost every night.. my husband workes late so when he gets home if he is in a great mood he will take me out for that treat.. really nice...

I like his Triple D show... just that he always looks like he crawled out of the rag bag. Flip FLops, zorries, thongs.. whatever you call them from your own generation.. are just not appropriate in a kitchen of any kind and that is all he wears. And the sun glasses hanging on the back of his neck... half the time I watch to see if they are going to fall in to something! So I just try to ignore him and watch the rest. I sure do enjoy seeing all the good eateries there are still in this country...fast food has not taken over yet! Som amazing cooks out there!

i dont watch his cooking show, only the diners and drive in show he hosts, so i cant comment about his cooking show, me and my husband think he is a really cool host on diners and drive inns we watch it together late night when he gets home from work.. watching all the homecooked meals from the show we have seen alot of diffferent ways to make new and interesting dishes, and alot of good ole fashioned stuff too.. I guess it hits home with me because i like to eat alot as well as cooking at home...always looking for new ideals, just not into the real fancy dishes.. plain home cooking works for me.. be it new ways to cook hamburgers, or a pot of homemade stew..
