do you waste food?

a huge amount of food is wasted in western countries, which has the effect of pushing up food prices and exacerbating poverty. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/sep/08/food-waste it is also expensive - apparently the average uk household effectively throws away several hundred pounds a year through this. so do you ever buy food which is then not eaten?

Guilty as charged. Sometimes I buy food and then we go out to eat and I forget about it until it's too late. Also I'm the only person in the house who eats leftovers. Plus my husband never covers anything, so if I don't catch it, "hockey puck"...

it is easy to do. i didn't really get the last part of your remark there - which may be because you're writing american but is more likely to be because i'm dense.

My husband doesn't cover food. So for example the waffles that he made the other day ended up hard as rocks, ie hockey pucks and weren't fit to be eaten.

Yes but, luckily I have farm animals that will eat it. The only thing they won't eat is pasta but, that hardly ever goes to waste at my house.

I have chickens (raised for meat not eggs), turkeys, ducks and geese. And, what they won't eat I send to my brother's house because he has goats and they will eat just about anything.

i could send leftovers to my brother because he would eat just about anything. i thought chickens weren't too fussy about what they ate though - why are yours so picky about pasta?

i don't waste food. i take only the amount that i think i would finish. there are people who don't get food to eat and we are privileged enough to get food. this does not mean that we have the right to waste food. we do buy food which can be consumed later if not then... so we consume it within the time period without letting it go watse.

i don't waste food at all, atleast i try. but i have seen many people they waste so much of food everyday that can be used to fill many people, that's so wrong :( i feel that we should never waste the food because there are some countries in the world who don't even get 1 meal per day.

it's careless to waste that much. i've had to toss (well compost) fruit and veg that has gone off but i'm (a bit) better organised now.

I do not waste food and i think no body should waste food because it is very precious. There are so many people who do not get enough food because of their poverty. There are some people who do not have any employment and even can not manage for their bread and butter. If a person is poor and have no money he can not get food. So food is very precious and we should never waste it.

i agree. it's pretty decadent to throw away food when there are people going without.

It is not wise to waste the food, when in some parts of the world our brothers and sisters wont even get a meal per day. In western countries also they dont waste food. They destroy the expired food thats all.
@jb78000 (15139)

i agree that it's not a good idea to waste food, however i think destroying expired food is wasting food - it's not being eaten.

We don't waste very much food because we live in a rural area and it is a long trip to the grocery store. We eat lots of leftovers! I think most people should try to grow some of their own food...it would be healthier and cheaper too.

i agree that growing some of your own food is a very good idea. what do you grow? i only grow herbs because i live in a flat but if i had my own garden i think i'd get some vegetables going.

I don't waste food because life in our country is difficult. Wasting food is such a big loss for us. What I do in order not to waste food and money is to buy foods just enough for us. I don't keep much food in our refrigerator because it will just be rotten if not eaten on time.

i do more or less the same thing. i've seen a few comments like this from people in the philippines and it makes what some people do in this country look even worse.

No, I don't waste food. I always buy food based on the demand, and seldom throw the food away. Actually, the food is not cheap now.

which makes sense - you'd be wasting money as well as food when you throw it away

I am the master of meal re-incarnation, we throw very little food away because the left overs from previous nights ends up in a sauce soup or casserole on subsequent nights. Food is expensive and I am poor so we waste as little as possible. The last stop for any meat cooked in my house is usually a casserole or a ziti, using whatever sauce or soup the meat became part of the previous night. My in-laws love my casseroles and soups, so when we have had our fill in my house, I call my husband's step father who drops everything to come over and get his piece of left over casserole or jug of left over soup! Nothing gets wasted here. We also have dogs who will get the scraps from our plates. I am not religious but my mom comes from a third world country and always told us that it is a sin to waste food, I tend to agree with her on this.

soups are great, you can put just about anything in them (well, within reason - possibly things like compost wouldn't be that nice) and they still taste nice.

we live in a third world country..and food is very important to us. though not scarce but mostly we consists of poor people. we live by simple lifes and live on mountainous region. living by food crops, rice plantations and if disaster may come. meaning we do not have anything to eat for our hungry stomachs. life is hard but we still do have some cities where we live in. but we really value our food so we do not waste it jhelai

Hello jb with lots of numbers. We don't waste food around the house but if there is a spoiled food, certainly it will be put to waste unintentionally. We would not want to be sick with eating expired foods, aren't we? We are trained by my parents to eat everything we get from the table. So we grew up like that. Even when eating outside, i always make it a point to make my plate clean *even a single grain of rice will be eaten*. It's sad to here the news you have posted. I am from the Philippines and a lot of beggars are lying on the streets looking for food. If only we could give some from them then definitely, it won't be put to waste.

hiya, do you go by koala or penguin? yep, off food has to be chucked. i've noticed that if you buy a lot of things like fruit they often go off before you can eat all of them.

If I buy it, I eat it. I don't really have money to go around buying things to throw them away like that. It's surprising that people are capable of buying something without the clear intent of consuming that, and I'd like to say "Oh, well. Their money.", but unfortunately this means that food is going to waste and you already know the consequence this has.
@jb78000 (15139)

it's carelessness - people probably think they'll eat it but haven't actually thought about what their meals will be.

In summer i often waste food because they are easy to go bad.And at last of my mill i always leave some food as the remainder look bad.I think this is a bad habit.Many people have not enough food to eat in the world.

well forcing yourself to eat too much is not a good idea. maybe just take a bit less to start with?

A lot of people are dying of hunger in other countries, we should not waste food. Good thing we have a dog and cats in our place, we would give them the leftovers to eat. At least we know that the food we were not able to finish was still eaten and not just thrown out to the trash.
@jb78000 (15139)

well yes, that's a good solution and means you buy less pet food.

jb7800 hi hatley here I am now in a retirement center so do not do anycooking bu t I do not eat everything all the time as my tummy can only hold so much and besides I am overweight so need to cut back as far as wasting food a lot of us Americans are so into not wasting food that we are one of the most overweight countries in the world. so if some of us choose not to make ourselves any heavier more power to us. as for food being wasted a lot of places reuse food by using up leftrovers so dont worry us about the starving kids in another nation as four tablespoons of something isnt going any further than the garbage disposal.
@jb78000 (15139)
9 Sep 09
hi hatley, i wasn't getting at not eating everything on your plate - that's just silly. and eating too much is not going to help anybody. the issue really is that if a lot of food is bought and then not used it pushes up food prices which has a knock-on effect in developing countries. it's more about economics.

This is very unfortunate and a great shame. I used to waste food although I don't do this anymore. I don't cook anymore than I can eat in any meal. They are saying that many years from now we could suffer from a real food shortage as the world population is increasing dramatically. I try to remember those in poor countries that have hardly any food and this helps me to remember not to throw anything away. Andrew

That is something which I hate to do. I feel very bad about wasting food. Sometimes I give food or food items to the poor people nearby my house if I tend to waste. My mom never allowed us to waste food when we were kids. When I shifted house, I donated all the food items I had which I didn't want to take to the new house to my maid. I also gave her some old clothes.

Wasting the food on the plate is not fare one/ Everyone in the world earnes money first thing for the food only. So no one should not waste the food. But some people think that wasting the food on the plate is prestage one, but this is not a fare one.On the whole nobody shouldnot waste the food at the maximum.
@jb78000 (15139)

i agree, not quite sure what you mean by prestage one though?
