Is it the batteries or the cars?

I'm not mechanically inclined at all. Mechanically klutzy if anything. But I have a question related to an earlier discussion of mine. I remember in past years with my first couple of cars that if the battery was about to die, it gave warning. In other words I might have trouble starting the car, but after one or two tries it would start. This would happen a few times before the battery died. But the last couple of cars I've had, it seems like the battery just dies, no warning whatsoever. First time last time, the car just doesn't start. Does anybody know why this is?

Hi dawnald, I expect you forgot to close the door tight the last time you used it, that happens with mine.

And funny you should say that, but one of the passengers doors wasn't closed that particular day. Are you a detective?

"American" products aren't any more. They're assembled from parts that were made all over the world!

The same thing happened to me last winter.....one day it started and the next I went out and it wouldn't start....but it was so cold I thought it had froze....so took it in and had to buy a new battery.....I don't know what it did that...maybe the don't hold charges like they used to.

We buy batteries with a 3 year guarantee and the last one lasted nearly 4 years.

ida no either.... And why is it that 75,000 mile batteries never last that long?

I don't think ours ever last that long, but Richard keeps the receipts and they give you credit towards the next one if they don't.

Might be a faulty mechanism somewhere. Normally, I would go the workshop, seek a 2nd opinion before decide on whether I wanna repair or not. Are you driving on stick or auto-transmission? Don't know if it's related but I do know that if the stick is not properly laid down fully, the brake lining will fade out. Perhaps that can be related to a battery fault, hence, no warning signal whatsoever. How about engine oil? Do you top it up often too, or missed out a lot of times. I'm not really a pro, but perhaps we can figure something out, before you go to the workshop for an opinion.

There's always a warning, like you have suspected.. So if there's no warning, there has to be something up surely, Dawn..

Hey dawny I just wanted to let you know that I am no more wiser about mechanics than you! I am sorry I know that doesn't help you in any way, shape or form. Just wanted to say 'hi' really - 'hi dawny'!!

There are so many reasons that would prevent a car from starting. Did you leave your lights on? If so that will kill a battery. Or you could have a corroded cable or a loose connection. Then of course it could be the starter. You should have somone look at it before you decide to get rid of it.

Yes misterwit you were but the meaning got a little lost in the syntax. Are you using a translation program? I guess dawn that the batteries have just gotten more efficient in using the last bit of life, so now they don't cough and gasp before they die. And no I don't think you are imagining it.

That's okay misterwit. I often wish I spoke more than one language. You will find that for the most part members here are supportive no matter what language you originate with. Sometimes its a little hard for us to understand what is meant after the translation program works it's magic, but I'm sure, also, that you have trouble understanding what we have said as well. If you are wanting to learn English this is a great place to practice. If anyone gets rude with you over this just ignore them, there are plenty of us who will be glad to take the time to understand your meaning. Also, if you don't understand something we have posted, feel free to ask. I for one don't mind rephrasing for clarity. Welcome to mylot and just have some fun with it.

Do you buy your cars brand new Dawn? Modern batteries ought to last years. Usually if they go flat it's because we do something like leaving lights on. Maybe you live in a Battery Triangle. Like the Bermuda Triangle only powerless.

hi dawnald well I am not a mechanical genius either.we had a pickup that did not warn us either when the batteryjust went'kaput' and right on the freeway in heavy traffic. So we pulled over and my husband found a freeway phone and called Sears as it was a sears diehard battery and under warranty.I will be darned but they'sent a truck with the repair man and a fresh battery. In a few minutes we were good to go.so we stayed with sears for sure.

Now that's scary. They don't often die when the car is in motion. Dangerous too...

I too have faced this situation but not so often. I guess its something to do with the car and how long its been running. I faced it because of leaving it idle for a very long time. Some of my friends faced it because they bought a used car and apparently the first owner didn't service it well or didn't care to replace the old worn-out batteries with new one before selling it.

The battery was probably due to be replaced. The kids leaving the door open was probably the last straw...
