Do you have any phobias? How do you deal with phobias if you have?

phobia - A phobia is an irrational, intense, persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things, or people. The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive, unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. When the fear is beyond one's control, and if the fear is interfering with daily life, then a diagnosis under one of the anxiety disorders can be made...

I have some phobias, one of which is walking or riding on or under a bridge. I don't know why each time when I have to ride my bike or walk under a bridge, I feel worried that those running trucks and buses on the bridge might fall down upon me. Or when I am on the bridge, I feel that the bridge might fall down to the ground. Another phobia of mine is water. If I walk in the dark close to a river or a pond or a lake, I feel scared when seeing the area of water, especially when it is tranquil. Also another one is height. When I stand somewhere high in a building, my heart seems to jump out when I have a look at the ground floor. I have always been thinking that it is something related to heart disease. So my dear friends, what about you? What do you say about this? I am looking forward to your response with keen interest. Thank you for your response in advance. Take care, my friends.

Hello nsmith. There is no problem for me to have ballons in my room. I used to play with ballons a lot as a child. Now sometimes I blow balloons for my baby to play with, but he always breaks the balloons with his fingers. Anyway he is less than one year old and does not know how to play with it. Thank you for the quick response, my new friend.

Hello my friend williamjisir Ji, Well, as such i do not have any Phobia which is a dis-order in our body. A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder. It is a strong, irrational fear of something that poses little or no actual danger. There are many specific phobias. Acrophobia is a fear of heights. You may be able to ski the world's tallest mountains but be unable to go above the 5th floor of an office building. Agoraphobia is a fear of public places, and claustrophobia is a fear of closed-in places. If you become anxious and extremely self-conscious in everyday social situations, you could have a social phobia. Other common phobias involve tunnels, highway driving, water, flying, animals and blood. People with phobias try to avoid what they are afraid of. If they cannot, they may experience Panic and fear Rapid heartbeat Shortness of breath Trembling A strong desire to get away But I do have a phobia of parting with anyone and specially with my near and dear. If one can undersatnd the last part of our marriage system, where Bride leaves the house of her parents, I am just not able to stand and face the music and scenes. I totally become nervous. One must get out of these situations. May God bless You an dhave a great time.

I appreciate your response and I think that you make me feel good when you mention inner confidence that we need to overcome phobias. I think that it is true indeed. Have a good day, my dear friend.

Hello my friend williamjisir Ji, So nice of you for your appriciation. I only know, if one has will, can be done. Jhon Milton's 'Allergo and Ill-Pensesro' titled poem has two contrsat charchters, whereas one is like Phobia only. He is always afraid of everything. It is more of negative thinking. You just try, a time will come, when inner confidence will come automatically and you will be removed from this condition. May God bless You and have great time.

Hi Williamji, how are you? And how is your son? Ha ha.. we two have one phobia in common, fear of height, either i look down at the ground floor standing, even on the second floor,or for that matter, i look up at the mountain, i have some grumpy feeling in my stomach. The second one i can put as sense of dislike, than of a fear, is to go to places filled with jam packed crowd, like going to a cinema theater, and auditorium. Take care friend. BTW friend, how is stock market in china going? Will Shanghai recoup to reach the 52 week high again? Many say that recession has hit China. Do you agree? I am more worried because, of late, Indian Market takes clue( lead) for its trading mainly from the chinese market. Take care friend. Have a good time.

Thanks a lot Williamji for you honest and good response. Actually after responding to this topic of yours i twice/thrice checked back here to see your comment on my response, but was a little bit disappointed when my post was not covered, and probably thought that you would have forgot me, since i changed my avatar. But something in me said, You won't forget me, and so i checked back today, and i am very happy. And my happiness is extrapolated when i hear that your son is chased by his class mate girl.. And it reasonable to worry, as a father of a charming and enterprising son, but then students of today are more planned and careful than what the earlier generations ought to be. So let off your worries about your son, he will find a good college next year. Oflate i am becoming more and more involved in learning the technical analysis of stocks and i am happy to see and hear that Chinese market is nearly out of recession. And BTW, have you heard any news about "FAITH210"? She has not turned up for quite a long? Any mail id's (new) you have please PM me friend. Take care friend, & have a good time.

Hello svka. I am now back to school for work after the long summer vacation. Work in the school is busy and stressful. My son is somewhat not very attentive in his study because of his girl classmate chasing him. I am getting worried about him as this is the last year for him to be in the senior high school, a very important year before he goes to college next year. He has to do a good job in the national college entrance examination before he can have the chance to study in a good college or university. He is at a rebellious age or stage though. As to the stocks in China, it is getting better, but still not as good as it used to before the recession. Many people have lost their money in their stocks they have invested. I am glad that my wife did not invest much on it. So even if we have lost money, we don't care too much about it. You have to be very cautious about stocks. But anyway, I wish you good luck to get as much profit as you could. One thing that I need to mention is that our economy is now getting better and many more farmer workers are coming back to work in the cities. It is an encouraging situation. All the best to you, my dear friend.

Surely I do have phobia only during during I closed my eyes during bathing or showering or swimming. Although, I am now 48-year-old it still roams in my memory bank. It is all about and related to my faves childhood TV show for 'Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea'. Where, a submarine heading towards me on the screen. This particular scene always comes into my memory every time I closed my eyes during that said time. I don't know how to remove it from my memory bank, I just let it be as it be every time it passes by. No one can help me UNLESS me myself. I called/termed it a 'SUBMARINE PHOBIA'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyage_to_the_Bottom_of_the_Sea

yeah i share your phobia of heights and also im a bit of claustrophobic, which is the fear of being trapped. I remember sometime ago my literature/english teacher sent us an exposition about phobias, in which all of the phobias had the same recomendations about how to overcome them. Mostly is to take deep breathes and to not get anxiety as that would just worsen the phobia.

Hello edxcast. I think that you are right that to take deep breath helps reduce the phobia. I should remember it when it comes to me. Take care, edxcast.

I have a few phobias my friend, the main one is of wasps, because one sting from a wasp could prove fatal and I have to carry around with me a special injector pen just in case. I don't like heights, when I went away on holiday with friends they went up in a balloon to view the landscapes, but I stayed on the ground, I couldn't go up, they understood and took filming when they were up there so I didn't miss out too much. I also don't like crowds, so I avoid busy places and I certainly don't go to concerts.

Hello dear wolfie. Oh, my! I did not know that one sting from a wasp could prove fatal. I used to be stung by a wasp on the neck, which was so painful and it got swollen for a day or so because it vanished without the pain. I just put some oil for cooking on the stung part and it worked. There was another time years ago when there was a huge wasp hive hanging over the ceiling outside my door of my apartment. I used my broom to clear it, but they all flew back. I had to fight against them by using some pest sprayer and I made it in the end. I think that I must be very careful with these fatal wasps. Thank you for the comment and the information. Take care, wolfie.

Hello my friend Williamjisir. I hope that you are well. I have a phobia of hospitals. For that reason I have always chosen to have a home birth. Unfortunately I lost two and a half liters of blood after my baby Amber was born. I had no choice but go to hospital in an ambulance. I stayed well enough to stop fainting and get my blood pressure normal again. I couldn't stand the city hospital so I discharged myself and went to my local hospital until I was well enough to go home. My toddler son, Leo, has spina bifida and hydrocephalus so he must attend a lot of hospital appointments. I hope that you are having a lovely day.

Hello maximax. I can understand your phobia of hospital because I myself do not like to go there unless I have to. I am so sorry to hear that you lost so much blood because of delivering your baby Amber. My wife gave birth to my baby son in the hospital for safety. I wish your children to live happily and healthily, my dear friend. Take care.

I think I have a few but I try to ignore them. Large bodies of water does disturb me as well as noises in the night. Sometimes these things can develop into a sickness. So I ignore them or try to forget them. They don't really happen often with me.

Hi williamjisir! I think it is quite normal for people to have some kinds of phobias! You are not alone! I am also afraid of heights! I don't like being up to high and looking down! I also don't like to be in closed in spaces, like elevators or crowded places! I'm not especially afraid of water, I actually am quite drawn to it! I don't like insects, so I guess that is a sort of phobia! I don't care for bridges much either! I never like going over them in a car either because I was always afraid that the bridge would collapse so I guess that is another phobia! So you see, if you stop and think about it we can come up with quite a few phobias!

Hello Opal. You are absolutely correct that more phobias will come up if we think about it, and if we stop, it will stop as well. So I think that we must learn not to think about it so that we can live more happily. Thank you for the comment, my dear friend.

I will mention one word: spiders!. I have a real phobia of spiders! They are hairy! They are ugly! They walk funny and they have too many legs! I tried watching a few spider horror movies but this didn't work, it just made things a whole lot worse. I know that they are here for a reason, well they rid the world of flies don't they? However, I still have no place for them in my life! Andrew

Hello AndrewFreyne. I have to say that I am very afraid of huge spiders as well. When I was living in the old house where I was brought up, there were a lot of very big spiders because it was dump on the first floor. And sometimes they appeared in our bedrooms on the second floor. Each time when I saw one, I had goose skin showing up. Even when thinking of it, my goose skin appears. But I am not afraid of small ones. Take care, Andrew.

When I was little stuff I had an issue with heights. Not so much any more. My problem, tho, is with bridges because one eye peripherally sees the level of the bridge and the other peripherally sees the 'down' beyond the bridge, and I tend to drift towards the rail and the thought of falling and going crunch gives me the willies. When I can't avoid crossing a bridge I have to watch the other side of the bridge at foot level and hastily get across...ENJOY!

Hello greenfeathers. So we have one phobia in common. I have read quite some news that people driving on a bridge happened to fall into the river or the ground when the bridge collapsed. It is so scary to me when thinking of the collapse of a bridge. Take care, friend.

The phobia I have is very very strange. I am made fun of by my wife and co-workers about it. I have a fear of cotton balls. YES cotton balls. They make my stomach turn just to look at them and shivers go up my spine. I work in a retail store and I cannot go down an aisle that has cotton balls on the counter. It is even hard for me to even think about it.

Hello awaha. I think that you can get over the phobia if you analyse why it is cotton balls that you are so scared about. Good luck to you, friend.

hello.. we have one same phobia - water !! - especially the sea... i think that has something to do with the fact that i almost drown when i was a little girl... i dare not walk at the edge of a pool - worried that i would just slip and fall in, and drown.. i think i may overcome this 'phobia' with pools, if i learn how to swim - but, unfortunately still not able to commit myself to start any swimming lesson... but.. as for the sea /ocean - i dont there is any cure for that.. the sea is just soooo vast... and to me - is such a powerful force.. you can build the biggest ship on earth, but you put it out in the sea - it becomes a very insignifant dot! - quite helpless and totally at the mercy of the sea... my husband has been nagging at me to take a 'weekend cruise' with, where we dont have to go out the big ocean.. only along the straits of malacca.. but i've said no all the time..

Hello 4mymak. I have been expecting to learn to swim, but it is hard for me to learn how. Once I get into the water, I don't dare to bury my head in the water to breathe, as a result of which I have never been able to learn how.
