Here in the states smoking in a public building is illegal pretty much anywhere. Also in many rented homes, smoking is banned. I am a smoker and there is not many places that I'm able to smoke at all. That and the outrageous cost has forced me to cut back so I guess it's not a bad thing. That being said, smoking is an addiction...a very powerful one. The people that smoke usually start when they are teens and then realize just how hard it is to quit. Punishment is not the answer.

oh here we go again. i am a smoker i will try not to be near people who dont smoke, and if someone or you approch me and say (nice) that my smoking is bothering you i will tell you sorry and move alittle futher away from you or them. as far as the mall and temples first of all i know in the states you are not allow to smoke near them at all. but as far as smoking outside like i said before i try to keep a good distance from none smoker, and yes we do have manners but i have encounter a none smoker where they were very illmanner toward me like i was at party outside, talking with a friend, as this man came up to me and said my smoking was bothering him and the smoke is blowing towards him, so i was like i am sorry sir i will move futher away from you, and then he started to push me telling me no i have to go the other way. i asked him like 4 times to please stop pushing me because i am about to knock the hell out of him. to me that is illmanner and when you are near someone who is smoking try to ask them in a nice way to move. so its goes both ways. none smokers as well smokers can be illmanner

Not only is smoking injurious to health it is a criminal offence in India now to smoke in public places. I have got into a lot of heated arguments trying to stop people from smoking since the enforcement of the law seems to be a pipe dream.People seem to think it is their birth right to smoke in public whether it is troublesome to others or not.It is an absolute nuisance.

Hi srija , it is really a good discussion to start with. Those who smoke atleast have commonsense that it will affect the near by people also. They don't have any rights to smoke in public places . If they want to do they can do at their house

People smoke because its fun, it gives them a buzz, or its comfortable. Why do you eat fast food? You SHOULDN'T punish these people, because they have the same rights you do. Bus stops, temples, and shopping malls all have rules against smoking in them, so your point isn't real.... If you asked me this in public, id blow a cloud of smoke in your face.

First you have no right to attack a person for anything that is done outside, such as smoking. People have as much right as you do and if you do not like it walk away from them. Now if it is a place that is posted then yes they should get a fine but for the freaks who believe they have the right to stop people from having their own rights while outdoors leave the smokers alone. Oh and no I am NOT a smoker I just believe you have the right to walk away if you don't like the smell.

Smokers & old white men are about the only two minority groups it's politicly correct to hate these days. Most of you aren't so much against smoking as you need somebody it's acceptable to look down upon. If I'm smoking in an outdoor public area, I try to see I'm down wind. As for the example to your children, I claim no responsibility there, that's on you. As for political Correctness, it is a fascist ideal on it's face! In a free society, there can only be differing views, not correct or incorrect ones!

I think,it should be government to take necessary hard steps against smoker who smokes in public place. We should tell the police when we see this, because smoker not plays only his life , but also spread cancer to others. There should be strict law against this person so that police can take action following strict law.

I hate it when people smoke in public around me. I'm pretty sure most people out there know about second hand smoke. They just simply dont care. They're going to have ugly lungs anyways. I just hold my breath when I'm near them.

Hi... we cannot punish any people of that kind. We can just warn them saying that its more injurious to the person nearby than for the person who is smoking. If those people understand the seriousness of smoking diseases they will not smoke in public places like you say. So its better to make them understand.

Maybe you should just move out of the smoke? :) Why do you have more right to be in the bus stop than the smoker? Just making a point, I'm not a smoker :)

uhh.. I dunno what to say, I'm a smoker, well the first thing is it's public, so any one can do anything (Almost) hahah ^_^ secondly, uhmm I think for none smokers shouldn't go beside the smoker, since you guys don't smoke. The third thing is, for smokers, they should be aware that not all people smoke, so don't go near people when your smoking ^_^ haha, That's what I do, Unfortunately wind is out of my control. If you know what I mean ^_^ anyways, Enjoy Mylot ^_^ Keep yourself Healthy for those who doesn't smoke. hehehe

Hi Srja, They are not sensitive that there are so many people around them who hate smoking-- they want company to enjoy what they are having...savor the smoke and just make faces. They need to be given a lesson, and that lesson is a long term negative effect on their body that will be the one who will definitely suffer. Although i am not ignoring the fact that we secondary smokers can suffer too.

hi,srija!I don't like smoker smoking in a public place.even if,I cannot do anything about it.smokers always take it as granted, feeling no appologized.and most people choose to stand smoking, saying no words.so I just hope one day a act will be put into action that prohibits smoking in all public places! have a nice day!

You could always try not treating smokers as lepers, or social pariahs. I think the stigma attached to smoking is absurd. There is such a large amount of propaganda out there as well as 'reasonable information' on the dangers of smoking (not, I would argue, as one-sided as the establishment would have you believe; and not, I would argue, as damaging to long-term health as being a great big fat b*stard) - so if someone chooses to smoke, why should they be victimised for doing so? Health Nazis really bug me.
