Have You Ever Had Your Credit Card Number Stolen?

A few days ago I got a call from a credit card company telling me that they saw some suspicious acitvity on my account and wanted to verify that the charges were made by me. I was shocked to hear of several charges that were definitely not made by me. One was for $1700 of computer equipment ordered online and a few other smaller charges made hundreds of miles away in another state. They could not explain how it happened but said my card number could have been compromised while making online purchases or even swiping my card at the grocery store or gas pump. I was so thankful these bogus charges were caught and I will not be held responsible for them. The credit card company cancelled my account and sent me a new card overnight and things seem to be okay now. Have you ever been in this situation and if so, how did you discover it was happening? Did you see fraudulent charges on your bill or did your credit card company catch them first and alert you? Were you forced to pay or did they cancel the charges?

Hi bestmommy. How are you...? It does happen and there are so many such cases heard every day. Though credit card providers are making a tight security and strict guide lines loss of cards and their fraudulent usage do prevail. The only solution for this episode is that card holders should be still more careful and cautious and should take care of the security of the cards. Here I want to recollect one funny experience I had some time back. I went to ATM to take some money along with my 6 year old kid. He is very naughty and would experiment any thing he would like to do. After collecting the cash I was just counting the cash; at that time my kid picked the card from my hand; after counting the cash I asked the child for the card; he coolly pointed a drop box (complaints and suggestions box) kept just one corner of the room. He gently told me that he had dropped the card inside that box. I was shocked. I inquired the security who told that the key was not with him and that that box was never opened for a long period. He also suggested me to see the Bank Manager. When I reported to the Bank Manager he was first annoyed and quipped why the child was brought inside the ATM room; then he coolly told me that the key of that drop box was lost very long time before and therefore he was helpless to help me immediately. However according to his suggestion I reported the loss of the card to the card authority and got new card. I was chasing the Bank Manager for some time and then stopped; however I told the Manager to first arrange to remove the box from the room. It was a pity experience I had, which pushed me to a mental agony for some time. Therefore it is very important to be very cautious about safety and security of the card. Thanks for the chance to share my views. WITH BEST WISHES.

How old is your boy now? Does he remember doing this? I bet you'll tell that story to his friends when he grows up. The scariest thing I remember happening to me that involved my son was when I was preparing our tax returns online. I had just spent several hours filling all the details and I walked away from the computer and when I returned my son was sitting there playing a game online. He had closed out the program I was using and I immediately panicked because I knew I didn't hit the save button before I took my break. Fortunately, the program had saved most of the info automatically and I only had to redo a small portion of it. He got a good lecture on needing to ask permission before he jumped onto my computer to play games and he still remembers that 7 years later.

hi, I think you are lucky as the credit card company peoople detect the fraud. I always hear such frauds from lot of people as i think it may be due to accident swapping of your credit card. Anyhow just take some precautions when you give you card to grocery bill counter or petrol bunks etc. I too observe the person while swapping the credit card inorder to avoid such situation but sometimes these precaution may not also stop the frauds. Ya i too face a situation where i lost my card and immediately i reported the bank. Then the bank cancelled the card and reissued it. Actually i was lucky to get my wallet back after stolen as my wallet contained 2 debit cards and 1 credit card. It was really a bad experience for me as due to cancellation of all cards i had to pay some money for reissuing them.

The stores I shop at have the card swipe machines on the counter where the customer swipes their own credit/debit cards so I doubt that anyone read the numbers and had a chance to write them down or commit them to memory because after I swipe the card it immediately goes back into my wallet where the numbers are hidden under a flap. I think it must have been some hacker that gained access to the store's computer system or possibly it happened online when I made a recent purchase. I'm very thankful the credit card company had such good fraud detection procedures in place as these charges were not even allowed to hit my account. They were denied and cancelled because they looked suspicious.

I've had my debit card number stolen some how. Like you I had no clue as too how. But some one got my number and used it for an online purchase. THe bank refunded my money and handled it. I don't know exactly what they do but i hope they caught whoever did it and I hope they catch whoever did that to you.

No but I thought I lost my debit card yesterday and I had just loaded it up with a good amount of money too. I tore my house apart looking for that thing yesterday and no luck at all. I looked in the laundry basket today and it was sitting near the bottom mixed up in a bunch of clothes. So I got lucky.

You certainly did get lucky! I bet it was a big relief to find it safe and sound at home and not have to worry about it being in someone else's hands. I never put my cards in my pockets. They always go right back into my wallet. I do however, find money/paper and coins frequently while doing the family laundry. I tell my husband and kids, if Mom finds it while washing your clothes it's her tip for keeping you looking good! LOL!!

No I haven't had my credit card stolen and wouldn't want to, that is scarey right there. I feel for you. I have been scammed out of money over 3,000.00 and that was the highest I have ever been scammed. I had went to the bank to cash this check that looked real for a secret shoppers job and after three days the bank came back saying it was fake. Made me so mad cause I had asked before I cashed it if the check was real so I wasn't the only one who fell for a fraudulant check. I will never be fooled again. I wasn't able to catch the criminal and she is still at large so beware if it looks real it isn't. Yep I was forced to pay the balance. Hurt majorally in the pocket.

Last year Chase called me to tell me that my credit card account was suspended because of suspicious activity. I was sleeping when I got the call, and when I woke up I went onto my online chase account but it said my credit card was suspended. When I called, they told me that over $600 was charged on my card and all the charges came from online jewelry sites. So, they had to go through the list of charges and ask me if I made them or not. Fortunately, I wasn't responsible for the charges and I got a new card a few days later. I'm not sure who got a hold of my card or how. I think it must have been when I was swiping it at a book store or maybe in the subway for a new metrocard. I'm not sure but it was scary because I used it two days before.

this happened to me last month with not one but two of my credit cards. i had to close both accounts and get new credit cards issued and i took it upon myself to get copies of all my credit reports and to put a freeze on my credit for 90 days so no one could open any accounts in my name unless i am notified first. what a hassle. i am still dealing with the credit card companies so i can get the charges removed.

I have never had a credit card because I think they get you in debt and people like to get there hands on them and clean them out if they get that far with the credit card. I mean that is a bill that some people get left paying at times because another person took the card. And the store people anymore never ID the person with the credit when they should be.

I'm afraid that it would happen to me that is why i never try getting a credit card and then registering it online. there are lots of spywares and other online thieves that could stole the credit card number.

Although I have never had a credit card number stolen, I have had unauthorized charges. I signed up for a free trial offer and had to give my number to pay for shipping and handling. I cancelled the subscription after a month, as it said to do if I was not satisfied, but then I began to see charges for things that I never purchased. The reason I was being charged was because I didn't read the fine print. I found out that because I had signed up for this free trial, I had signed up for ten other things that I was not aware of. Well, I ended up not having to pay for these unauthorized charges. I also canceled my credit card and got a new one.

My mother had fraud on her account and it has taken years to clear up. Someone had gotten a hold of her Social Security number and had opened three accounts in her name. One for an expensive car (my mom is a frugal spender and would never spend money on an expensive car) and two credit cards that were maxed out. My mother was very upset and it had ruined her credit for years. It took a lon time, but things were cleared up. They cancelled all these charges, but still it hurt my mom.

Glad to know that you were saved and didn't fall prey into it. A friend of mine had to lose some $3000 after she did some grocery the night before from her usual grocery store with her debit card. Unfortunately when she came to know about that, it was all gone. I know, it was her hard earned money and i really really felt bad about that. Another friend of mine told me that her credit card number is stolen and used by someone. How did she come to know about that? she has put email alert for each and every payment that is made by her credit card, so she received one email alert stating that her credit card is used at such and such store of such and such COUNTRY. so she stopped the transaction then and there and got her card changed. Good luck to you bestmommy and am really happy for you!

Credit card stolen is rampant. How can we beat the pressure down? The online should add another security measure.
