When working, would you prefer some background music? or complete silence?

I've come to a point where I'm tired of having to work in complete silence. I think a little music would not hurt, but after a few songs, I find myself switching the radio or the mp3 off. So, what are your preferences?

Music, an early love... - ...of mine. This was me a good few years ago now, in a pub.
It depends. Recently, I was trying to finish off a writing project of mine for publication, and it was an incredibly long, hard task, trying to iron out every single mistake and make sure everything evened up, going through my writing over and over again with a fine tooth comb. And having music on helped me enormously. I just played one album after the other. The music both relaxed me; and stimulated me to work harder. And recently, listening to a lot of full albums has reinforced my passion for music, which faded somewhat for some reason. But it's back.

Same here, it actually comes and goes - the interest in music. I guess there are circumstances where we find ourselves wanting music with us with the difficult task we have on our shoulders. Though, there are times too that even a single song (that you liked) would make you feel it's noise. Thanks for the response. Have a great Mylot experience ahead!

hi, laydee (3977)! when i'm doing some serious work, i'd like to do it in silence so i could concentrate more. i want background music (soft, mostly) when i'm doing no-brainer tasks.

Hi laydee! It's nice to work with music in the background. There are times though when I would prefer complete silence. Most of the time, I prefer having some music in the background. It keeps me inspired.

Well, I actually like to have some background music as it can inspire me more and to balance my brain. FYI, I work as a programmer. But the condition in my office doesn't really support me to hear music. First of all, I don't have speaker attached to my computer, and second, if I want to bring a speaker I certainly can't use it since my division manager also play music on her computer and there's no way I play another on my computer :D A bit sad though, but sometimes I use headset to hear music. Rarely do this though since I can't hear other sounds like phone ringing or boss calling me when I use headset.

Hmmm.. Perhaps you're blasting through the headphones that's why you cannot hear the phone ring or your boss calling you out. Perhaps if you could lessen the sound, you could still enjoy your music. Thanks for the response. Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

It depends on my mood, I suppose. Sometimes, I like to work in cold silence (but not very often). Usually, I prefer to have some background music - but nothing too distracting, else I find myself dancing (in my mind), and not working! What music do you listen to, when working? What's most distracting? I wish I could listen to music at work, but they won't allow it. So I tend to talk a lot, which sometimes irritates my colleagues!

I would say, it really depends on my mood. If I'm OCDing and need some peace and quiet then even music can get annoying. However, most of the time, I can handle having some music. Music really relaxes me and helps to keep me focused. For me, Christina Aguilera and Alexz Johnson are the best to listen to. They're music is so inspiring and I find their voices calming.

Oh I know how you feel! there are times as well when I can't stand music. I guess it somehow depends on the mood. Thanks for the reply.

I have to have some music going on, I love music and working without it makes work boring and drag on forever. I usually have some type of music going, it depends on the mood for what kind of music I have blasting.

Turning the music on is definately a good idea when people are working. yet it depends on what sort of work you are doing. for example, if you are doing housework, then there is no better idea than letting the music sooth your tireness and tension. It not only makes you feel the burden is lightened, but it fastens your working speed. But of course it the work involves in much thought, then I would keep the environment very silent so that I can concertrate on it. No need to worry that music drives my inspiration away.

I often run into the situation just like yours. I always thought a little music could keep me awake and refresh me to a certain kind extend. But, in fact, it would abtract you from your work, especially those songs with singers. As to me, unwilling to work in complete silence implies that I am already tired and cannot focus on what I'm doing. If you are really tired, why not take a break, give yourself a short period to forget all the work, and just relax? It surly does better than getting invloved in the work listening to music, which really reduces your efficiency. Sometimes I know that I should go out and take a break so as to work better. But when put into that environment, I'm always sticking to the task. So, I still sugget you downloading some light music or classical music ( recommend Mozart's), and play it in a low volume. In that way, things will get better. Hope my advice can help ^^

Listening to Music - Working at the PC and listening to music can be disturbing.
If I am pottering in the garden I would certainly like some music in the background but if it is some paper work that I am doing or I am at the computer answering for example this question of yours I would not like any music as that would certainly disturb me!

Hi laydee it depends upon the situation you are working, what type of work you have being assigned to perform before taking any decision on this issue...if you are working on an important task then a silent environment is required...

I also love to have some music while working as it may make you feel better, but if it is some work that needs concentration, it will distract my attention. Recently I have gained back my past hobby to listen to music while using the computer.

It depends on both the available music and what I'm doing. If I'm trying to write, I usually want it quiet. If I'm cleaning house, something upbeat like jazz is welcome. The golden oldies and some country or gospel sound good when I'm sewing. Classical music is good anytime. As you see, I have a great variety of music in my music library.

I prefer working with background music.I don't like working while it's quiet.it is boring.I will get bored with work easily.I would rather work while there is a perky tune in the background.it makes me more awake and active.

I prefer to work in silence so that I can focus and finish the work faster. In my experience, when there is some music esp. music that I like, my attention gets divided and I finish the job at hand at a slower pace. If I don't like the music playing, it doesn't affect me as much.

I would like to add that above comment is for mental work but for physical jobs, I prefer to have some music which helps me not to tire easily.
