I am poor at bargaining. I repsect the people who can bargain well, because it is something which I can't do well. Most of the big shops have fixed prices and bargaining is possible only in street shops and other small shops. Most of the people own thos small shops are poor and I feel pity to bargain with them for 10 minutes in order to reduce 10 rupees. I have a friend who is very good at bargaining. Are you good at bargaining?

I live in the US, and unfortunately (or fortunately?) not too many places allow for haggling. This is probably a good thing because I have NO idea of how to even START bargaining. It seems like the only places that allow for haggling are smaller companies, and usually when employees are paid on commission. A friend of mine and me went to the mall and haggled down a hair straightener for $250 - down to $89. Which is pretty cool. She did most of the talking though..Thankfully!

Oh, she must be good at bargaiing to reduce the amount by a big number. Uusaly people say if you have change to bargain, always start form an amount a little more than half the price. I feel bad to start bargaining at such a low amount. I live in India, and here bargaining happens a lot in fish markets. People who sell fish usually ask for more money because they know that people usually reduce it by bargaining.

One of my high school teachers (yes, here in America) would bargain everywhere for everything. He told us that it usually worked--even at places you wouldn't expect like the grocery store and Wal*Mart!

No such talent here! I always thought that it was a guy thing. Not to know much about haggling. But, I've met some guys who do know how to haggle, and some are even good at it. So, it must just be me. I know the principle, I just don't know how to execute it.

Do you think bargaining is a guy thing? No, not in India. I have very rarely seen guys bargaining. Women are good at bargaining. Guys hate to wait there for a long time keep talking and get the amount reduced. I have seen that women don't mind to waste time, if they think they can get the stuff at a reduced amount. Thanks for the response.

That's what I meant by haggling as not a guy thing.

No!Not at all!I don't have the patience to bargain. And I don't go for just shopping. If I go shopping then It is to get that thing immediately. So,I go for the right place with quality.I don't like to shop in street sides and bargaining there is really an art.One has to start with half the price they quote and sometimes for your surprise, they immediately agree and we have to stand astonished.

You are like any other Indian guy who is not fond of shopping and want to buy qulity stuff. Men usually prefer to buy qulity stuff that lasts for a long time. Women has the habit of buying something which is cheap and that good pretty. They give more importance to the look of the thing compared to the qulity or durability of the thing. Thanks for the response.

I should say i'm good at bargaining. At least i make an attempt to bargain. Even though i get many stuffs from the BIG shops, but i love shopping from the roadside vendors who don't mind bargaining. I have got real good stuffs for a cheaper price. However, i see to it that i do not cut down drastically on the shopkeeper's profit.

YES!!!! i can say that i am. here in our place, people who have bargain shops are not poor. they are wealthy but does not appear one. bargaining is not a bad one, you just need to persuade a little further to get a reasonable price - one which you can afford and one which does not lose the owners capital. its win-win position so to speak. i'd like to buy in bargain shops than in malls. because in bargain shops on the sidewalk you can still but good items which are affordable to your pocket. bed covers and pillow covers of good quality are my obsessions. and i was able to get good ones in a reasonable price lol :-)

No I'm the same with you, poor in bargaining! I think I hate bargaining a little! Whenever I want to buy something the first place that I will go to is the supermarket, Because it is the the place that you don't have to bargain, and the goods in market is also very cheap!!! I find a curious thing: most of the men do not good at bargaining, but women do!! I don't know whether I'm right or not! If I'm right, could someone tell me the reasons?? Thanks a lot!!!

I am pretty good at bargaining but only when I am in the mood for talking because sometimes I am not in that mood.It is the same here ,the shops have their price and their price is usually fixed. So you would have to apply bargaining to the street corner shops an stall. Here they normally reduce teh price by the equivalent of twenty dollars

Hi daliaj, I'm really good at it when I've had the chance but have mainly just got to enjoy it in foreign countries where it is the norm. I did use it here the other day as bulk purchasing something and had no intention of paying the full price as I'd prechecked the price on the internet to have a guideline of what price to expect. The set price was E1.10 per item and I got her down to .79 cents but felt I could have done better. If I purchase a larger quantity next time I'll certainly bargain further for a larger discount.

I am a sort of good at bargaining. I always used to bargain if I go for a purchase and that is what expected from all of us. I rarely buy branded stuffs and I always buy things that are availalbe in the road side market or local prodducts except for the cell phones. Hence it is absolutely necessary for me to bargain before buying. Thanks for starting the discussion and have a cool day in mylot. Cheers:-)

I think you have to be quite assertive to do this and I am not sure that im at that stage yet. Im working on it but bargaining sounds quite scary to me.

Hai daliaj, A good discussion indeed. Yes I do bargaining when I shop sometimes but not successful always. But my sisters are all very good in bargaining and are really very skilled in it , so when we are all together during vacations at home I make it a point to take them when I go shopping.

I never go to shops where one has to bargain. In fact I know what I want and if I like it I buy it without even looking at the price tag as there is no point in looking at it since they will not reduce the price anyway as I require it no matter what the price. I more or less know if it will come in my budget.

I am poor at bargain.I don't like that kind of shopping and the seller set a high price ,which make me feel it is not worth what i have paid. That is why i like going to bid shops where the price is settled. Sometime myfriend and i go to small shops and i am really depressed by my friend's skill in bargain. She can always bargain the price sown to half. Happy mylotting.

Hi, daliaj! Maybe try to think your money is also from your hard work, and being conserving is a good virtue. I think those street shops can be quite profitable, at least something better income than some white collar jobs. I am not good at bargain. I usually try, but finally I still buy things with same price or maybe some cents lower. Usually I buy things from supermarket, so my brain became retard at the time I need bargaining skills. If I like something, and the origianl price is already a good deal, maybe I don't bargain.
