What tastes good with fish?

I am new to eating fish - and I discovered quickly how much I love it! I've tried salmon, cod, and tilapia. I'm actually about to make supper, cod, and I was thinking, "I love fish, but it sure can get boring eating it plain!" So, my question to you fellow MyLotters is this: What do you put on your un-breaded fish? Do make up a sauce, use lemon juice, or even something else? I want to try something with my cod tonight, so I was hoping perhaps you could share your experiences!

I like to add something to fish as well. I enjoy cod cooked with rice, tomato puree and curry powder or paste. Start off the rice as you would for a risotto, tossing in butter or oil. Then add the tomato puree and curry powder or paste and water or stock and cook until the rice is soft and most of the water is absorbed. Then cube the fish and stir in for the last 5 minutes or so. This works with cod or other white fish, and also salmon or tuna. Add some fresh parsley or coriander befor serving. I'm sure you'll enjoy this. It tastes better than it sounds.

Thanks for telling me how to do it, because I sure want to try this one! How does curry paste taste though? I've never had it. I love cod and salmon, but tuna is gross to me. Maybe it's because I had so much of it when I was younger, because I can't stand it now, haha!

If you've ever had a curry of any description, you've had curry paste or powder. It's quite spicy, so start with a little, taste when cooked and add more if you need to. It's easy to add more, but impossible to take some out! However, if it does turn out too spicy for you, cool it down by stirring in a little natural yogurt.

I usually cook my fish in olive oil along with a little fresh garlic and onions. This gives the fish a nice taste and makes it even more healthier. Not too much oil, onions or garlic. I sometimes make up a fresh tartar sauce by mixing relish with a little mayonaisse. Potatoes or a salad is a great side dish to go with fish.

Ooh, that sounds good too. I've been reading that a lot of people cook their fish in olive oil, so I'll have to try that. Since I'm trying to lose weight healthier food is always better! I don't like potatoes that much, but salads I'm in love with!

I like to put a little salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paparika on my fish. I love the color the paparika gives it and it gives a little kick too. I also like to use a seasong called Soul Seasoning which is pretty powerful and if you use that you don't need much else. Some people use a little lemon and salt and pepper. I like a little holandaise sauce on my fish too. Here is the recipe: http://www.ehow.com/how_5684570_make-hollandaise-sauce-holiday-meals.html

Ooh, that sounds so good! Thanks for the recipe link, I'll be sure to try that when I can get my hands on all the ingredients. I've never heard of Soul Seasoning, but I'm partial to a little garlic myself. =]

I usually steam fish with ginger paste, sesame oil and seasoning, or bake it (marinated with chopped garlic and chilli paste or black pepper sauce). I've also tried cooking fish (stir-fry) with sliced ginger and spring onions. I love deep-fried fish, but I can't cook this, so I would order this dish when eating out.

The stir-fry sounds delicious! I would love to try that if I ever eat at a restaraunt that serves this. =] I'm not a fan of spicy food, so the chili paste is probably out. But the ginger paste, sesame oil and seasoning sounds wonderful - I'll have to make a special trip to the store sometime soon!

Hi TickleMeBreathless, the standard Greek dressing for fish is simply olive oil with lemon juice. I get fed up with lemon all the time so when I cook fish myself I put orange slices inside the fish and on top of it, with olive oil, and wrap it in a foil parcel to bake in the oven. I had a wonderful sauce in a taverna to go on octopus which was the the standard oil and lemon but thickend a little and with balsamico added, it was delicious.

Ooh, that sounds good! I too get tired of lemon juice, as my grandma puts it on all the fish she cooks when I go to eat at her house. I never thought of using orange before, thanks!

fried or grilled tilapia work best with pickled papaya or "atsara" as we call it here. try it and you'd be hooked on that combo .

Atsara? Never heard of it, I'll go look it up. =] I love grilled tilapia, too.

I think for creative options it mostly stems from preparation. I think grilling is a good time to think of exotic ingredients that match the fish. Fresh/lighter dishes with acidics and maybe some sweet sauces. As for the simple frying, all you have to do is match something (usually) fried that tastes good with other fried food. Hush puppies or frieds are also good combies. As for baking/seering or w/e other ways of cooking you were contemplating. More singular side dishes that pair up with the fish should be good enough. I like asparagus with a few types of fish: Salmon, Talapia. But its always gonna be left at what you personally like or how the dish is supposed to fit in the context of the meal or a style of presentation you're going.

I found a 3 citrus salt rub at the grocers on the spice aisle. It only takes a little. I rubbed the fish with that and then placed it in a ziploc bad with a little lemon juice and Italian dressing to marinate for a bit. It was delicious! We cooked it in foil on the grill. I topped the fish with some asparagus and lemon butter. Also, I think it Lawry's, that makes seasoning packets. They are good too.

Fish can go great with just about anything.. you can marinate it with a mild garlic and ginger glaze.. you can deep fry it and allow it to have a crunchy texture... I am not sure that i can provide a favorite way to have fish prepared because they all taste pretty darn good... but I guess its a matter of personal opinion really...

Spice up that fish and make it burn. :) Use Cayenne Pepper, salt, black pepper a touch of garlic and then back with a bit of butter. Serve with a bed of rice and steamed veggies and you have a great balanced meal. I have done a number of different dishes with fish. My mother-in-law even makes a shepards pie of sorts out of salmon or tuna that is really good. Happy fishing!

I like to take milk with my fish. Just kidding. I usually use lemon juice, tartar sauce, and ketchup. Actually, I love to use ketchup on almost everything, but that may not sound too good with fish. I don't mind it however, especially when it is mixed with tartar and lemon. You can never go wrong with lemon, so that is the safest bet I would say.

Hi ticklemebreathless! How about making fish cakes? Cod would be a great fish for that. It goes great with sauces like hollandaise and honey mustard.

I love fish as well. I like seasoning with lemon juice, lemon pepper, seasoning salt, pepper, and other things. My unbreaded fish, for some reason I still like tartar sauce and hot sauce. Sometimes I mix them, that my be weird, but I like it. Actually I like Accent as well on my fish. I'll get back to you when I think of more things because I know there are a lot more things I like on my fish, but I can't think of anything else right now.
