Learner drivers... what do you do when you meet them on the road while driving?

I was taking lessons to obtain my drivers license. And the recent lesson I took reminded me of some incidents that I find very disturbing. Drivers out there, you too were once a learner driver. My question to you is this, what do you do when you meet a learner driver who has his/her training wheels on and in the middle of a lesson or a test? Do you honk impatiently at the fella and intimidate him/her cos he/she is hogging the road by driving slowly? (lest you "Qualified" drivers forget, which is a requirement BTW!) Of do you give them a little more leeway and either over take them, of show extra patience by giving way to them? Well, I am griping, cos it happened to me once, when I was on the road taking my exams and this frigging jerk of a driver who was in a Mercedes, so happened to be traveling on the same route as my test route, honk at me incessently and got me a failed grade even when I observed all the correct rules and procedures! It first happened when I was trying to filter into the right lane to make a right turn. The Merz was directly behind me when I was signaling to filter to the right lane. I saw the opportunity to make the change of lane when he too changed his lane and honked at me when he couldn't over take me on the right lane! 8 points deducted on my record for "Obstruction of traffic"! Sigh... Then came the turn. There were a lot of road works at the junction that I was suppose to execute the right turn. I was already inching my car forward to try and get a better view of the oncoming traffic when a lorry, those super huge ones carrying concrete, drove up to the same junction from the opposite direction to try and make a turn too. The lorry blocked my view and I could not see the traffic. So I tried to inch a little more forward, but I have already moved my car as far as I could without obstructing the oncoming traffic! As I could get a clear passage, I couldn't make my turn. The darn merz honked at me again. Another 8 points deducted on my record for "Obstruction of traffic"! Sigh... But I still couldn't make my turn as the oncoming traffic was too heavy. Then another honked. Another 3-5 mins passed before the traffic was cleared for me to make my turn! 24 demerit points was recorded due to this merz driver!!! I was so mad! No amount of explaining to the tester will do to change his mind amending his decision. As long as there is a honked from other drivers, it is my fault. Regardless of the traffic situation! As a result, I failed. Recently, I was taking lessons at another attempt to obtain my drivers license. It has been ten years since I drove a car. So I was cautious when I am on the road. Again, I was at this junction. This time, there are traffic lights, so traffic was much easier to managed. A small goods lorry came up behind me and stop dangerously close to me. The lights were red. So I waited. When the lights turn green, I engaged the gears to move off. As usual, being a Learner, my instructor do not allow me to speed, so my moving off was slower compared to the qualified drivers that surrounded me. But the light turned red again before I could line my car up for the turn. The darn lorry honked at me! And again, stopped really closed to me. As the lights changed, I was moving off and making the turn. Half way into the turn, the lorry who tailgated me, honked at me again! Sort of like a protest at me for being slow! Goodness. I am having L-plates hung on my car for goodness sake. What is it about these b@stard$ that they do not understand that Learner drivers are suppose to be driving slower than normal? Grr... this makes me so mad! So, again, what do you do when you meet up with a learner driver on the road? Do you behave like a bully and intimidate them? Or do you turn on the patience mode and give way to them?

Hi ahqong! Well i guess it's a proud bearing by the Mercy Driver, but one thing that when we are learn to drive is to be patient, maybe it's the one thing that the lesson needs, to increase a careful level, well next time when you meet a person like the Mercy driver, just ignore them, don't loose your focus , and i hope you will pass your driver exam next time

I haven't actually run into one of those in a while but I am not the horn blowing kind of girl. I am actually quite patient and would just hang back and let the student do their thing. I can't believe that the instructor would count it against you because the person behind you honked their horn. The instructor knows that you are doing the right thing. I would be mad at him too. Take care.

I totally understand. I was a learner driver a few years ago too. And met my fair share of intimidating drivers. Sounds like you are learning at Ubi which is where I learned too. Super heavy traffic. I am always honked at, but I took it to be my fault because I'm really very slow and not very confident at driving at all. I totally sympathise with other lembus (cows) and if it were up to me, I'd be totally nice and accommodating to them because I know what it means to be a learner driver. The merz that was honking at you is definitely a total jerk! he definitely knows you were taking an exam if you had two L plates at that time. So unless he was from out of the country, he was just trying to make you fail. It's the same once you pass and get your provisional triangle to drive with for a year. Some dodos will try to bully you on the roads. But i don't care. Driving slowly and staying alive is more important to me. They can honk all they want.

Well well well, that's the story of a learner driver!! MOst of the time, we dun fail because of our own faults, but rather it's due to others, whom are impatient and just their luck to be behind us!! And actually, testers are at fault too!! They are in the same car as us, and they should clearly know that, learner drivers are definitely not speeding, keeping to the speed limits on road etc.. BUt they choose to fail us just because they are hearing something they dun like to hear?? It's just too unfair right?? I think if i learnt my lesson, i will choose to take my test on a non peak period, and i guess it should be very much easier.. haha =D

Those were really inconsiderate moments by the so called drivers. There should be some patience for learner drivers because they would really feel overwhelmed by their surroundings, especially on their test dates. Just something that a learner driver has to go through; definitely a great challenge. If I come a cross learner drivers on the road, I'll always give ample space for them to react. I feel for them really..

I'm pretty patient about student drivers. Yes, I was also once a student driver (weren't we all at one point in our lives?!) so we really should have patience with them. But it depends on how slow they're going. Student drivers, while they should be cautious of course, should also try to keep up with traffic (NOT by speeding -b ut by going the speed limit or a little bit under.) It doesn't make it right, but I can understand why some regular, just trying to get to work, is riding your butt if you're going 15 on a 30 and they can't pass you up. I would never take it out on the student driver though, especially by honking. How obnoxious! He (or she) could have re-routed wherever they were going, or if there was a second lane, pass you or the student driver up.But some people are just crazy! I don't understand how they could've gotten their licenses in the first place. Anyway, it's too bad that that Mercedes jerk had to ruin your driving test for you. Possibly next time you could immediately pull over into the shoulder to let him pass?

Due consideration should be given to cars that has an 'L' tag displayed in the cars. I would not act so foolishly as to honk my car if I am driving behind a learner's car. This will only incite nervousness on the student driver and he will lose all his sense of balance when his attention is diverted by other road users. I hope you will pass your driving test with flying colors.

Of course those people you mentioned have somewhere more important to be then behind a silly learning driver, that is slowing them up. Poor poor people, with no patience, and always being in a rush. The examiner should have been more lenient as well, if you are following the Rules of the road, and other drivers are not, and honk at you for it, it should not count as a demerit, that encourages unsafe road travel, mind you that is just my opinion. Cheers.

When ever I see some these people I judge their driving. If they are doing things good I just give them some slack and relax. If they cut me off or something Im honking at them big time. To me it depends on the drivers of the car. Sorry to hear about your driving test. Just a suggestion drive a mile or 2 over the speed limit. Easier to avoid getting some honks. The not being able to see sucks. Might have to do a few inching out then if you can get any glimpse its clear inch to check then go. Otherwise your gonna make a lot of people mad.
